  1. Class 1 cutoff 500 -- There are 2 Class 2A schools with less --Brunswick 477 and Mountain View Quicksburg 499 Class 2 cutoff 725 -- Central Woodstock has 770 Class 3 cutoff 1130 -- Lightridge 969 and George Wythe Richmond (1074) compete in class 4A with less. Tabb (1132), Culpeper County (1163), Lake Taylor (1179) and Caroline (1150) compete in class 3A with more Class 4 cutoff 1550 -- There are a handful competing just above or below the cutoff Class 5 cutoff - I can't tell. they seem to be able to go where they want at this level. lol. Tallwood competes in class 5 with 1977 students while John Lewis is in Class 6 with 1723. Cutoff seems to be around 1750. Alexandria City (formerly T. C. Williams) has 3777 students. The high school has a larger population than Highland County and just a few less that the city of Norton.
  2. All the SW District schools Graham regularly competed against through the years were at least legitimately 3A. I don't think Graham had to compete at that level but I think they enjoyed the challenge. I remember talking to Principal Gary Williams when Graham went to the Mountain Empire and he said it was for the other sports. I remember him saying that it just didn't make sense for the other sports to be competing against the Cave Spring's of the world. I was at his house getting old clippings of his father who was a first-team all State end at Bluefield High in 1948 (when there were only 11 players chosen) and we had an interesting conversation.
  3. The Shott Foundation paid for the initial turf installation in 2007.
  4. You have no idea how much it costs to maintain a high school quality football stadium. Insurance, electricity, water, security, repairs, garbage collection, maintenance, extra pay for the people doing these things. Try doing that for under 50k. You can't. Plus you have to build the thing for a couple million and pay off those debts. The only complaint I have is the rest rooms are terrible. Need to work on that. There is a reason that every time any of the four schools renting the stadium start talking about building their own it stops pretty quick. They run the numbers and it just doesn't add up.
  5. I understand the macho thing and kicking to him the first time. But the second time.....SMH
  6. I believe the times have been flipped. The class 2A game is at noon and the class 1A game is at 4:30.
  7. You know I got to thinking. I suppose IF Union's band was there AND they were playing (most likely) AND I was not specific about which band I was asking (I don't remember my exact words) I could see how Union's band could misconstrue my intent. If that is the case then I apologize for not making my intent clear. For instance, if I said, "Will the band stop playing while Graham has the ball"?. Then who could be sure which band was being asked? Now if I said something like "Will our band", or "Will Graham's band" the it would have been clearer.
  8. That never happened. I asked the Graham band not to play when Graham had the ball but I have never said anything to any visiting band except to announce them before the game or at half time.
  9. Are we talking about the waitresses or the food??
  10. Some states let private schools compete. Some don't. Personally I think that they have no business competing in public school leagues. Apples and Oranges as far as rules go for enrollment. However I do like private schools and if I had the money and the opportunity I would seriously consider putting my child in private school.
  11. So. I have several legal financial arrangements set up to pay less or no taxes. Nothing corrupt about that.
  12. Generally one of the worst things you can do for a successful organization is to replace yourself with your son. There are exceptions but it usually does not work out well.
  13. In 2019 Kempsville of Va Beach ended a 63 game losing streak dating back to 2013 but still only went 1-9. Two years later they are 9-1 and in the Region Final vs Green Run. Their only loss was a close one (13-21) to Green Run early in the season. Nice to see that you can turn around a program,
  14. Ridgeview called Bluefield in the off season. They said it looks like we have matching open weeks. Do you want to play? Bluefield said sure. It was that easy.
  15. plenty of parking. Great view of the game. If you are on the visitor's side and the sun is out it will be in your face but it will help keep you warm.
  16. I graduated with John Lilly in 1981. We went to school together from first thru 12th grade.
  17. I think Coach Palmer has a good mix of discipline and forgiveness. His time as a police officer has helped him very much. Players want to play for him. He comes from old school but doesn't force that attitude at all costs. Players want to play for him.
