I know right. With Honaker moving to the Hogoheegee District starting the new school year, it leaves Grundy, Hurley, and Twin Valley in the Black Diamond District. I believe Council moved to the Cumberland starting the new school year as well, i could be wrong about this if someone wants to clarify this.

Council is not coming to the Cumberland.

What changes would everyone like to see in high school basketball?  As John Marshall has shown, the game is evolving.  Sometimes not for the better.  But since the VHSL seems to say that what John Marshall is doing is legal (in the latest Richmond Times Dispatch article), it looks as if the talent influx and legal relocation into the state of Virginia isn't going to stop anytime soon.   So what would you  like to see different in high school basketball?  I have some proposals:

    1. Move the 3point line to 22 ft. 1 3/4 inches to match the men's and women's college game.  Put an emphasis on coaches to coach players and develop them to take the mid range shots. If player's aren't able to shoot the 3 from this distance, it will definitely show up and force coaching to develop the mid range game.  Also when games are played on college courts there will not be as much of a difference in the three point lines.

    2. Do away with quarters and institute two halves of play.  Many teams now play supers and as we know the games sometime take forever. Eliminate some of the breaks.  Play two 16 minutes halves so that the flow of the game doesn't go uninterrupted.  Give each coach 2 full time outs and 2 30 second timeouts each half.  To use how they like.  If they don't use them, they lose them.   They then get two more full timeouts and two more 30 sec timeouts in the second half.

    3. I am 50 percent on the shot clock.   I feel that not all schools are equipped to handle the shot clock.  I believe once all of the small Southwest Virginia schools become consolidated as well as rural schools throughout the state and the gyms/arenas are able to handle the new technology then I believe that the state of Virginia should go to a shot clock.  Make the game quicker and put some responsibility in the hands of the players.

The largest problem I see in to days game is what James harden brought on by drawing fouls constantly. Basically we have a whole offensive mentality built around getting layup, setting illegal moving screens after a paint touch, shooting 3s, and getting to the foul line.

Is this a new rule? It's been a while but I've seen a few players play the JV game and varsity game in same night

This one is as old as the hills to my knowledge, Va talked once upon a time about going to 6 quarters a night but their VHSL head health individual bucked on the idea last I heard. I very well could be wrong cause you know how traditions are from one school to the next. But I have never seen one player play 2 games on the same night and get away with it as a VHSL sanctioned school.

Every school in the cumberland adheres to this rule, Ive not been to a lot of M7 games but I could easily ask if needed.

If JV players play on the varsity it is my understanding that in Virginia they can not go back to the JV team. Is this correct?

22 Regular season games is the maximum that any VHSL Basketball player can play. The level at which they play them is irrelevant. In addition, you are only allowed one contest per night unlike Tennessee and Kentucky.

I actually love what John Marshall and Coach White are doing. He's getting kids in school whether it through AAU or school ball. Maybe having those kids there with him is a better situation for them. We can only speculate what's going on. If the parents have those kids enrolled there then so be it. This happens here in Charlotte every year. The only difference is down here we have 20 public schools in the city. there are numerous other surrounding public schools as well as charter and private schools. Kids transfer all over the place from year to year.

Then let them play a schedule like Oak Hill....

GC girls are for real. In a game of matchups they are the worst possible matchup for a younger, smaller RV team. GC out rebounded RV 3 to 1. IMO GC girls are the best team we’ve seen and it’s not close. Be interesting to see the results on 1/3 between them and Central.

After Last night showing I will take my crow with a little bit of ranch and say GC is the favorite to win. Good thing is, we wont have to wonder because things will be settled with their first match up with Central.

I'm not in favor of any tournament where you could potentially face a district opponent in it.  And in that Wise tournament two M7 opponents facing each other is always very high as well as two Cumberland opponents.

This years Cumberland district is Burton's to lose and its not even close. Eastside and Twin springs are playing for second unless alot of development happens.

I watched some of the Thomas walker game online and I don't think the coaching staff was a factor at all.   They could have stayed home and it wouldn't have mattered in this game.

Do you have a link for that video feed?

Imagine that, all that talk and girls basketball kicked off their season strong this week, without Lowe. A great coaching staff leading them, future looks bright for these ladies.

Rumor this month is Aaron Lowe is set to take the helm as head football coach in Honaker. He’d look good in orange.

I would probably hold off on any praise for the new coach until after Friday. Beating a Thomas Walker Team who unexpectedly lost 4 returning players is little cause for praise.

With the number of kids at lhs vs tw and the amount of travel ball that I’ve heard that the lee kids have been playing over the years, how are they losing to a smaller school like tw? I know last season wasn’t the most successful for them either.
Has tw got that much talent? Is the talent down that bad for lee? (I don’t think  so because I know they have great talent in kids like hammonds and Leonard). Is it coaching or are numbers down that bad? Or am I missing something else? What is happening?

What's your thoughts on the one state champion Kentucky crowns?  I actually like that and wished all states did that for basketball.  A Region 1 tournament would've been epic in Tennessee last year with D-B, Greeneville, SH and Mo East all involved and only one spot coming out of it.

Im ok with it but KY is odd with sports.

They play private vs public. LCA, Lex Cath, Trinity, and other private school are better off than almost any school we have ever seen.

They have other tournaments that smaller schools classify as their "state championship" but the Khsaa does not recognize

The Sweet sixteen in every sport other than football is dominated by Louisville and Lexington teams constantly (Volleyball, soccer, baseball).

It would be an nice idea to continue on against the whole state, but when specifically focusing on Virginia and their lack of funding in Education, it would only show how awful the spending gap is between 1a and 6a schools. KY and TN spreads out there educational spending better and its not stuffed up the asses of Richmond and WDC. I saw a report that showed Virignia Equitable among Education spending is dead last, i believe it.

Defnitely agree with that last part just based alone on watching the 15th Region tournament last year in person.

Sad part is the 15th 14th and 13th region's are historically terrible outside of the laurels. But they are better than any team swva puts out. There are jv teams that would have won the Cumberland district last year and probably 1a state title.

Outside of 2010 there hasn't been a team this side of ky win the sweet sixteen

I don't necessarily see comments about how kids could be used in different positions, to take advantage of their full potential,  as anything negative towards the players. That's a comment on coaching. After all, the kids don't choose the position they play or don't play. Not being able to place a kid in a position that they can most effectively be utilized is 100% on coaching.

Feel free to say whatever you want about any former or current coach at any school. I was just curious why you'd care about the goings on at Union. Carry on.

    We can agree to disagree.

I'm just curious why a coach from TW would care anything about the DC from Union getting called out for his inability to make in game adjustments, unless...

I simply used an observation to link union's hammer to dawg01, I have no problem with him bashing Bostic, Turner, or Edwards. I do have a problem with him "suggesting" that certain players deserve time over others. Its passive aggressive bashing.

Just like you, I had my dirty laundry here at TWHS with Johnson. I did not agree with the spread system. I would have ran the T after seeing the 2017 scrimmage, West Greene, and Harlan games. Furthermore, I am ticked at Johnson for leaving for greener pastures with an athlete that could have easily turned the tide at Thomas Walker instead of taking them to Union. Now that Johnson's tenure is up, I feel that I can easily speak my peace without harming either team, which is the same way that Union Fans should be. Wouldn't you agree?
