  2. I can't speak for the Southwest District, but in the M7, teams get points for their order of finish in the regular season district standings, and then points for their placing in the district tournament.  The regular season does carry more weight.  The only team guaranteed a spot in the region tournament is the highest finishing 2A team in the regular season standings, and that team will get the M7's #1 seed to the region regardless of what happens in the tournament.  The 6th seed in the regular season could possibly outpoint the 4th or 5th place team if that #6 upsets the #3 in the tournament.  Also, who ever loses the #4 vs. #5 seed tournament game will be done for the tournament, but will advance to the region unless #6 upsets #3.

The SW district will have their own formula for how they will seed their four, and it will be complicated by the fact that they have to figure Grayson County in the mix.

Bingo, but split the middle between 4 and 8, and for Classifications 1 through 4, allow 6 teams per region in the playoffs with the 1 and 2 seeds getting first round byes.  For Divisions 5 and 6 of which you have more teams, allow the current 8 teams in the playoffs.  The concern is error on the side of safety.  Kind of like our criminal justice system.  We know there are many guilty that will walk, but there are much, much less not-guilty that get falsely convicted.  The same with the playoffs. we are worried far more about a deserving team being "falsely convicted" (left out of the playoffs) than we are a non-deserving team making the playoffs (guilty, but not convicted).

We don't need 8 teams to make it in per region to be sure a playoff deserving team does not get left out.  We only need 6 to do that. Richlands begs the question and challenges the above because of their schedule, but I think Richlands situation could be fixed with a better power-ranking system of which they would have rightfully finished 6th and ahead of Battle and Grayson because of the strength of their schedule.   Therefore, I think the solution is not making it 8 teams, but the solution is giving more weight to strength of schedule and the power ranking system being improved to place more weight on strength of schedule.

Each region has the autonomy to allow as many teams as they choose to make the playoffs.

Anyone else following this? First-year coach having success but he is stirring the pot nicely over in that area.

I'm just basing my info from his facebook account but seems like he is testing the norms and trying to "bring about change" to a community. Check it out for those interested. Careful though, it is a rabbit hole and you'll be lost in hours of reading his stuff and the comment trash. lol

    Opinions?

It's easy to be so outspoken when you have nothing to lose.  Just like everything else, there's at least two sides to every story.

The older Boyd kid won't help with anything in the post but y'all are getting one of the if not the best pure spot up shooter in southwest va. I know the competition isn't great  in 1A but he had 15-20 vs George Wythe and Lancaster last year and both were good teams. I disagree with Dick You don't hit 160-170 3 pointers and score 700-800 points as Fr and soph and not be good enough to go from 1A-2A. Other than Gate City we've been as good if not better than anyone else in the area for the last 3 years.  I think we will be really good again this year and could beat anyone again outside of GC or Graham. The last 3 years we've beat George Wythe 2x, Graham, Eastside 2x, won tournaments at Virginia High and Wise lost last possession games to Richlands and Union. Most impressive went to state all 3 years. I wish we played in a better conference and saw better comp all year instead of just in tournaments.

So you are saying GC is getting a couple of brothers from?  Honaker?  I must have missed something in this thread or forum.

  6. Now that I can post this without conflict. Which I'm sure this is no secret. Gate City will be loosing their superstar point guard. Via Oak Hill assistance which I shouldn't have named. Mac McClung will be offered scholarship to Oak Hill Academy where he will play his Senior year.

Maybe you should let him announce that.

  7.

BHC and Roanoke Times are listing the girls first round games as this:

Graham at Grayson County, 6 p.m.

    Richlands at Grundy, 7 p.m.

    Tazewell at Marion, 7 p.m.

If Graham's girls were a #7 seed, why did they play #3 seed Grayson County tonight?  #2 usually plays #7.

  8. It all comes down to how you define strength. I'm sure Battle argued 0-2 against Union was "stronger" than Central's 0-3.

To me, it's impossible to say winning percentage is what is implied on tiebreaker two when the actual verbiage is used on tiebreaker three.

Anytime you leave it up to a committee it's a mess. We've seen numerous odd occurrences through the years. This stuff really should be laid out for everyone to see like football is. I feel like these committees make up their own rules as it goes.

For what it's worth, I think Central should be the three seed by common sense on the Lebanon deal but, by how the rules are, it's impossible for them to be the two seed if you follow the rules.

It's sad for everyone involved that it's literally 24 hours before postseason play begins and the seeds aren't finalized.

It is laid out in the handbook that was posted on here.  For tiebreaker #1, the teams split, so you go to tiebreaker #2.  Central wins at tiebreaker #2 because Battle lost to Lebanon and Central didn't (neither of them beat GC or Union, so you compare how they did to the next highest seed, which is #5 Lebanon).  The rest of the tiebreakers do not come into play.

  9. Like I have said before in another post... Do away with districts and make each team play each conference opponent twice. Extra games are free for alls... add opponents that are close or tournaments. Do whatever you want to fill your schedule. Then we would not have this problem...

Next year conferences will no longer exist, only districts and we will move back to an almost similar set up to what we used to have.  There will be 4 regions instead of 2 with each region consisting of 2 districts.  Clinch Mountain district will have Abingdon, Central, Union, Ridgeview, Battle, Lee, Gate City.  Everybody will play twice in the CM District.  Abingdon will play in the district tournament, but must compete in 3A for their region tournament. Southwest District will include Tazewell, Richlands, Virginia High, Lebanon, Graham, and Marion if I'm not mistaken.

The only odd ball thing is that Grayson County will not be in either of these two districts, but will compete in the region with Clinch Mountain and Southwest District teams.  Unless something changes, for basketball, 4 teams will advance to make an 8 team region tournament.

Seeding Abingdon in a 3A region tournament will be difficult, as will be seeding Grayson County in this region's tournament.

  10. Looking at the rules, if I'm Battle, I'm PISSED.

    Rules, from the conference handbook:

If number two thru seven are tied, following criteria will be used:

1-Head to head competition, all conference games.

2-Strength against team 1-7, ALL games will be used. (emphasis-mine)

3-Winning percentage against conference opponents. (This will include ALL tournaments except the district tournament) ((again caps are mine. Wise was 0-3 against Union, because the UVAW tourney counts now)

4-Winning percentage against conference opponents, all games will be used.

    5-Decision of the seeding committee.

So, howjn the world does Central get the #3 ahead of Battle, when Battle had a better conference winning percentage? If you include all games, Battle was 6-6 against conference teams. Wise was 5-7. Battle beat Wise by 8, Wise beat Battle by 3. Wise lost to Lee High, Battle did not.

Battle got screwed, simple as that.

Central won the tiebreaker at step #2.  Neither beat seeds 1 and 2, so going down the line to compare how each did against the next highest seed, #5 Lebanon, Battle lost to Lebanon once, and Central did not lose to Lebanon.

  11. Milo seemed eager to skip the conference tournaments and go straight to the regionals, so I figured I could at least provide my due diligence and at least go ahead and post the thread:

    2A West Boys:

First round at regular season conference champions (Tuesday, February 21):

CH #1 Dan River vs. RR #2

CMC #1 Gate City vs. SEC #2

RR #1 Martinsville vs. CH #2

SEC #1 Richlands vs. CMC #2

Semifinals at James River High School (Thursday, February 23):

Third Place/Finals at James River High School (Saturday, February 25):

    2A West Girls:

First round at Regular Season conference champions (Wednesday, February 22):

CH #1 Chatham vs. RR #2

CMC #1 Wise Central vs. SEC #2

RR #1 Martinsville vs. CH #2

SEC #1 Virginia High vs. CMC #2

Semifinals at James River High School (Friday, February 24):

Third Place/Finals at James River High School (Saturday, February 25):

I'm not 100% sure about CH yet, but at last check Dan River and Chatham respectively were leading boys and girls...

I'm pretty sure it is Gretna, not Chatham as the #1 girls team out of Conference 37

  12. How does Richlands lose that game? Up 10 heading into 4th with what, 6 players who are redshirt seniors? First team they have seen that has been a solid team and they cant finish the game. But this game will pay dividends come late Feb if they can remember back to this game. Next tough game they have is Graham on Jan 5th.

If I am not mistaken, Richlands will end up with one game less on the schedule now correct? Think they will pick up a game?

Unfortunately VHSL rules do not allow teams to pick up a replacement game if they lose one (play one less than planned) in a sanctioned tournament.  So if Richlands gets one less game than planned in this tournament, that's a bad lick for them.

  13. Anyone got the line-up for the girls showcase at Emory & Henry on the 31st

This is what a few teams have on their schedules....

    Floyd County vs. J.I. Burton, 10:30 a.m.

Virginia High vs. Ridgeview, 2 p.m.

Marion vs. Twin Valley, 3:45 p.m.

    Carroll County vs. Central-Wise, 7:30 p.m.

10:30 am     JI Burton vs. Floyd Co.
12:15 pm     Wise Central vs. Carroll County
2:00 pm      Ridgeview vs. Virginia High
3:45 pm      Twin Valley vs. Marion
