  1. The problem with only four teams advancing is you can have some really good teams miss the playoffs. I know George Wythe and Galax both have missed playoffs with 9-1 records before and Galax only had 28 points scored on them that whole year.
As far as a record cutoff, where is the line? Galax win state in 2015 with a 6-4 regular season record.

  2. Wins isn JV does not translate to Varsity success. Some schools don’t place much emphasis on JV wins. Galax has traditionally  been an easy win for most programs as they work on getting them ready for varsity.
I seen kids at Grayson lose one game per year in 8 th grade team and 9th and 10th grade JV years . To go 3-7 their junior year and 5-5 their senior year.

I still believe Grayson has a good shot at winning the Region and moving on just based on their sheer athleticism.  Two areas need massive improvement the O-line play and overall discipline.  Way too many penalties and alot of showboating..

I thought their line played good last night especially the right side. The rest you are spot on about.  I watched them in two  games now and they have struggled against two very weak teams. They are going to have to really clean things up to make get to regionals and beyond.

side note - is the Gillespie kid banged up ? As seemed way off and every time he got the ball netted negative yardage. The kid seemed like the best athlete on the field last year

  4. Galax has alot of talent that is young and is going to be a good team but  is just not there yet Graham should pull away in this one  unless there is just a huge lapse after Bluefield Game.  If there is a lapse it will be close but Graham should still come away with the W .

They did at one time because a bunch of us from Fries attended Vaughan School, which was a K-9 "Intermediate" school in the Carroll County School System, and were playing sports at Fries by the time we were in 8th grade. Fries was/is part of the Grayson County School System.

I don't remember many of the details and Vaughan School closed nearly 30 years ago (dam, has it been that long?). I just remember it being normal for us to play 8th grade football at Fries while attending Vaughan. Maybe @Optimal62knows a bit more detail.

@sixcat is correct. The 9th graders was allowed to play on the Fries varsity squads in all sports.  The reason being is the bus ride from Vaughan school to Fries was a 5 mile ride tops. If the Vaughan kids rode  the bus to Hillsville for practice after school, the practice would of been all but done by the time they arrived. Almost an hour bus ride. So playing varsity sports at Hillsville for Vaughan kids was not possible- thus the exception.

    30 years dang!

hes not hes a finesse runner no power sorry call it like i see it. one guy brings him down most the time between  the tackles and is brother number 20?

I have no idea how you came to this conclusion . He is a very hard nose runner and in all the playoff games I watched it took multiple people to bring him down. He made GW defenders look inept all day.

Although he is not a D1 RB. He doesn’t fit the mold of the spread offenses these teams run. Even though he has all the talent needed to be a D1 recruit , kids in these types of offenses get overlooked. Happened to Giles alot in the past. He will play D1 not as RB but he will play D1

Suggesting the road becomes much more difficult in Class 2 doesn't magically suggest they can't compete. Nobody is suggesting they can't compete. With no bye in the playoffs in Class 2 and quality opponents throughout the playoffs unlike Class 1, it's reasonable to suggest the road gets much more difficult. As great as Appomattox has been over the past decade, they haven't played for eight consecutive state championships. Neither will Riverheads in Class 2. That's not to suggest they won't play for one here or there, but not a chance in hell they play for eight consecutive.

This, I agree with completely. It was an extremely bad look for Riverheads and one I find to be petty. It only adds fuel to the "Riverheads cheats and fudges numbers" fire.

I stated the road becomes much harder for them. And there absolutely have been people  stating they won’t compete not in this thread but in both boards there have been several stating that. Again I believe they will be in final four very consistently.

Someone still needs to explain as to why Grayson got to play down and Riverheads didn’t except for the fact the assclown superintendent threatened a lawsuit.

You made a very rude comment about the Grundy coaches. Then again, being obnoxious, rude, and arrogant  are common traits by certain schools and people along I-81 from Abingdon  to Salem. This has been observed and noticed for years, especially in Wythe County and Washington County. Some of the comments made by people from Rural Retreat and Chilhowie this fall when a certain school requested to join the Hogoheegee were just plain rude and uncalled for. I can think of a few better terms to describe you and this, however, if I use them Mr. G-Man would probably kick my “ar$e” off here and I couldn’t follow Cousin Liam.

Umm you are going to have to help me understand. I never once mentioned Grundy in my comments , so not sure what you are on about or on period!! I was speaking about Essex coaches. As far Rural retreat and Chilhowie again I am lost. So there that!

  9. I will say this for those saying they can’t compete against two teams , you better believe they can. They do it week in and week out now. Are those the cream of the 2 A crop? No but Buffalo gap is certainly no slouch.  They won against the tazwells and Glenvars each time they played them. Will they dominate like they have in 1A  that remains to be seen but it won’t be as easy as a road. My opinion they will make final four for many years to come.

as far as people complaining about the numbers and claiming they will have an asterisk beside their name. To be honest a majority of the state feels that way and feel very strongly about it. Right wrong or indifferent, although the RH admin did nothing but fan those  flames. The request to play down in 1A just solidified those beliefs. Again right or wrong that is the case.

Either way they was fun and maddening to watch at the same time. Lol

Mark Dixon has said many times, Casto understands line play better than any high school coach he's come across. Not only what Casto wants his kids to accomplish with line play, but he understands the opponents line play better than the opposing coaching staff. He knows what they tend to do and counters against it. Add in the sheer numbers they produce within the football program and a strength program that is second to none, it's a recipe for success.

He was a master of tweaking a very little and getting alot out of it.
West is the best is correct they get so many people to the pointing attack that it overwhelms the defenders and then when they get past the line of scrimmage their backs are extremely hard to bring down. They run hard!

Well since you know so much football and are such a good judge of coaches and players, I have one simple, easy question. Why are you not the Head Coach at George Wythe? I guess if you were the Head Coach, George Wythe would be going for their seventh consecutive State Football Championship instead of Riverheads.  Well, is that so?

Easy there fuzzball don’t get so worked up you give yourself a stroke.  First of all just take a look back through all these threads and you will see I am not in the minority here. Even the loyal GW posters have been screaming it for years. So there’s that. It’s all on tape to view and written about more times than I can count.

To answer your one simple question .I have done my time coaching one year as a grad assistant in college and 8 years high school. Loved it as far as making it to 7 state championships ? never claimed that but I did make it to two Southern Conference  championships in college  one as a coach, one as player.

But bottom line money!!! It doesn’t pay enough!! God bless those that do. These guys start in august spend at least 4 hours a day after the work their regular job and if they make it deep in  playoffs, all the way to December. And the assistants get roughly 1500 per season and the head coach won’t even break six figures. A few do but a very few. The community found out the new head coach at Grayson is getting paid 80k a couple weeks back and they are calling for the super intendants head on a stick. So yeah good times.
So mr Hoyt here is your hat back! Have a great championship week.

  12. This is not the riverheads of teams past- but they are still a  machine. The beauty of the offense makes it extremely hard to get a good clean shot on the runner because there is so many bodies flying around. And their backs run extremely hard which makes it hard to keep them from getting several yards a shot unless you can bottle them up at the line of scrimmage.

Essex had talent everywhere but like RedPride stated in here or the other board it is not used correctly. The play calling was suspect in several key times. Their D line alignment set them up for failure before the snap.

I hope its a great game
