At this point it’s obvious Abingdon doesn’t care much about winning and is a poison pill job. Williams is arguably the best coach in the area and he was a short termer just like everyone else that has been through the last decade….they are probably going to have to get a young ambitious guy because anyone with any sense is going to run from that place
I saw a post on here a few months ago about reclassifying these types of programs. Maybe @sixcatput it on here. It was something NC was doing. Sounded like a good idea, but these city schools should be bumped up to 5a or 6a. Based on their successfulness.
NC and GA both use a multiplier for charter schools and other schools that can recruit
Wise wasn’t very good last year. From what I saw this season, Wise improved all season as their chemistry came together while Ridgeview really seemed to struggle after mid season. I did not watch Marion but I would assume those games simply come down to matchups. I just don’t see anyone on Honaker’s team that can slow down McCamis. Dotson really gets the most out of his talent. Even with healthy Vance I still don’t think it’s closer than 20. As for Carroll county, I saw them 4 times this year and they are legit. IMO Ervin is the best individual player in swva. They are also very deep with speed and talent. They will be favorites for 3A for next 2 years.
Lu Mclanahan is right there with McAmis athletically. Not the basketball player necessarily, but running jumping strength etc.
Last year’s Honaker team had a lot more speed overall-this year’s version is longer for sure.
Wise by 25+. Honaker had too many turnovers in their game and wise is much better with defensive pressure. It’s simply a different game at the 2A level. Just like Carroll county (3A champ) beats wise by 20+. Speed and depth increases with bigger schools.
This year probably yes…last year not so much. Honaker 2021 would hang in with Wise or GC
Don't know if this is true, but from what I read on another site, the VHSL is allowing home teams to play in their actual home gym in the state quarterfinals and state semifinals as long as.....
1. The gym seats at least 500
2. The home teams gym must have access/ability/camera to live stream the game for home viewers.
Here's the other insanity, as of right now, even though the gym must hold at least 500, the VHSL is NOT allowing more than 500 people in the gym for all state Quarterfinal and Semifinal games. There is much discussion and debate coming this upcoming week with the VHSL as to whether that is changed....or holds.
Again, the above is only what I read.
Part of what you read has definitely not been true in the past. VHSL has required a much larger attendance capacity than 500 and schools could not “host” but they could play at a venue close by that meets the VHSL requirements. With Covid that obviously may have changed.
That's what you think. Apparently, Union's principal wants to hold the game at UVa Wise to avoid the hassle of hosting this game. And just to be sporting.
I thought it had to be a neutral site-last year was the exception due to Covid
Not sure what game you watched. It was not one sided. It was a very entertaining game to watch. You trying to blame the refs and take credit away from kids who played a great game. Both teams never quit.
It was definitely an entertaining game-and TS still had to make plays-I am just saying as a guy who has no skin in the game on either side that it sure felt like the officiating was trying to make sure the #1 seed advanced…especially in the final 3 minutes
James River vs Alleghany. Alleghany is sneaky good and James River gets a tough draw for game one of the playoffs. Alleghany played James River within 7 points in the last contest and Alleghany ran a very good Glenvar team ouf of the gym Friday night.
Martinsville vs Dan River. The Bulldogs still play basketball in Martinsville and they are talented, but undisciplined. When they play the occasional disciplined game, they can play with a team like Radford. .
Chatham vs Floyd County.
Nelson County vs Radford is NOT on NFHS.
Region D
JI Burton vs Northwood
Twin Springs vs Lebanon
Eastside vs Honaker
Grundy vs Holston
My picks- James River, Martinsville, Floyd County, Radford, JI Burton, Eastside, Grundy, Upset of the Night-Lebanon over Twin Springs. Lebanon has lost 8 games. 6 of those losses were to Class 1 schools and all 6 losses were by a combined score of 29 points. 5 of the Class 1 losses were by a combined score of 13 points. Lebanon is sneaky good. I think many people might think the upset pick is Honaker over Eastside, but if there is an upset tonight, I will go with Lebanon over Twin Springs instead of Honaker over Eastside. As for Grundy and Holston, I don't think Holston winning or Grundy winning is an upset. Game could go either way.
Honaker and Eastside played a tight one a couple weeks ago-I think it’s a tossup for sure.
Lebanon is young like Honaker-both teams only play one senior-I think that is part of why they have dropped a lot of close games. Russell Co going to have a lot of expectations in Region D the next two years.
It won't be but honestly if Union beats GC by double digits, the entire first team should be Union kids. They've yet to play a district game within single digits. Reyshawn Anderson is Union's sixth man and would start for any other team in the league.
