  1. I watch a lot of middle school ball and tune in to NFHS to catch a lot of it. A couple of days ago, Gate City's middle school absolutely dismantled Abingdon. It was 38-0 early in the 4th and GC called the Dogs off and it ended up 38-8. Gate City's middle school looked huge and they had a bunch of kids with very impressive speed. I don't know what the record is, but that's the best middle school team I've seen this year. When those 8th graders are 11th graders, in 3 years, Gate City will certainly have the hogs. I've seen Pulaski, Radford, Blacksburg, Abingdon, Gate City, Glenvar, Salem, Christiansburg, and Floyd County. Gate City's junior high to me, looked equally as good or maybe even slightly better than Salem. Gate City to me, has more than just a few coming up, they look to me like they are going to be fantastic in a few years. They were so physical that Abingdon had 4 kids get hurt with legal, textbook, vicious hard hits to the ribs, and the starting QB and RB for Abingdon were able to came back in, but they set out for a series due to what looked like rib shots, getting the wind knocked out of them. Abingdon was completely outmatched, and GC looked like they had 37 kids out there, which for 7th and 8th grade, that's a good sign when accounting for only 2 grade/class levels.
  2. I watched the Bobcats play the Blue Devils. I don't know much about Gate City's coaching situation, but I watched Gate City against us, and I watched Gate City on NFHS another time. I actually think Gate City is very well coached. I think their staff puts their kids in the best situations possible, but they just don't have the Hogs in the Pen. It seems like many of their plays called is really good, but they just don't have the talent to execute. Hopefully GC gets back to being good. I miss that. They were still good enough to about pull off the win over the Bobcats.
  3. Vick and Curry same year, last High School Football seasons were 97, the graduated in the spring of 1998. Suggs last season was the same as Julius Jones, last season was 98, graduated High School in 99. Houseright last season was 97, graduated high school in spring 98. As for Hampton's national titles in 96 and 97, in 1985, the were voted at season's end, the number one team in America by the World Features Syndicate National Prep Poll. That poll started it's first year in 1984, then went away after 1985, then came back in 1987 or 1988 and lasted for about 30 years, and is known today as the Prep National Poll. The World Features Syndicate had a bit of a homer voting. A guy named Tony Mercurio known as "The Blastman" was a long time radio sports guy in the Tidewater Area that announced High School Football (mostly the Hampton schools) and he was at one time, the Voice of ODU, and called many of ODU's women's nationally prominent basketball teams games, including hosting a longtime sports radio show in the Tidewater. He was one of the lead contributors to the World Features Syndicate Poll and greatly helped Hampton get that 1985 number one ranking. That Hampton of 1985 team was known as one of the best defensive teams to ever come out of the Tidewater. They had something like 6 shutouts and 10 out of 14 games where opponents scored 7 points or less, and their schedule was crazy tough, featuring back then, great teams like GW Danville, Deep Creek, Kempsville, Green Run, TC Williams, etc. Just a gauntlet week to week. I wasn't old enough to see that 85 team, but I remember Hampton fans still talking about it in the 90's.
  4. Those Hampton High Teams were great. I saw them in 1996 when working in the shipyard down there. They were voted 2 times in the 90's, I think 96 and 97 as the number one team in the nation at season's end by at least one national high school football poll. Also, many may not know this, but in 1985, Hampton High was also voted at season's end, as the number one High School Football team in the country in one High School Football Poll. So, over Mike Smith's run, aside from all of the State Titles, he's actually won 3 national titles!!!
  5. Big one over in "East Salem" tonight as the Bobcats travel to Glenvar. The Bobcats looked like we've turned it around and finally, are playing to our potential. This game will be a close one. I love the Bobcats on a dry field, but favor Glenvar in the rain on a wet turf. Hopefully we can get the win. Radford's Tyrel Dobson, linebacker, has committed to play at VMI (FCS). He's a great kid and is the heart and soul of our defense. Games Listed on NFHS Scheduled for Tonight ....... Radford vs Glenvar, Central vs Gate City, Tazewell vs the Fort, Patrick County vs Martinsville, Union vs Abingdon, Bluefield (WV) vs Ridgeview, Gretna vs Tunstall Bland vs Galax, Rural Retreat vs Holston, Chilhowie vs Patrick Henry, George Wythe vs Grayson County, Thomas Walker vs Twin Springs, Narrows vs Craig County I don't know if any of the games above were played last night, or moved to Saturday or cancelled. The above is what NFHS shows for tonight. They have Va High and Marion for tomorrow.
  6. Glenvar and Radford game is tonight. The game will not be moved to tomorrow.
  7. Final: Nottoway 63, Randolph Henry 0. Nottoway clinches the number one seed in Region A.
  8. Yep, they have a nice field. I hope they move it to Saturday though. Our line play has gotten a lot better, but our strong point is getting the ball to some of our speedy guys in open field. A wet field, even though their turf will hold up fine, i think favors Glenvar. I saw Central play two times this year and Glenvar reminds me of em. They don't blow u away in any 1 area but they do everything really good and they are well coached.
  9. Radford and Glenvar are still on for tomorrow night, but a decision to be made tomorrow AM by both AD's on whether to move the game to Saturday. Heavy rain in the forecast for tomorrow night nearing 100 percent chance at kickoff, but down to 30 percent for a Saturday afternoon kickoff. For now, same time, but could change tomorrow morning. This info came from a Radford assistant coach.
  10. I like Ryan. I have seen Ryan post over the years on Virginia Preps he is super smart on pigskin and seems like a great dude. I know vtdavis (played against him) from Giles and he is also a great guy that knows football and was one heck of a player at Giles. The guy from Princeton, well............damn! All of us have bad days.
  11. Final, Stuarts Draft 28, Buffalo Gap 14
  12. Clarke County, a 2A top 5 ranked school suffers it's first loss of the season 14-7 to Meridian High of Falls Church, VA
  13. From Buckingham and a Final Nottoway goes to Buchingham and wins on the road to remain undefeated by a score of 26-8. Nottoway also looks to be the real deal this year. I was told earlier this year by my brother in law who lives in Crewe VA (Nottoway) to pick the field (the rest of the East) over Draft to play for a state title game. I would be surprised if Draft represents this year over King William and/or Nottoway.
  14. From King William, VA King William 62, Defending 3A State Champion and undefeated Lafayette, 41 King William is for real guys. I favor them over Draft, Poqouson, Buckingham, and Nottoway to represent the East in the state title game. They lost to Goochland early in the season with 8 players out due to Covid. For anyone familiar with eastern VA, it's well known that Lafayette is no joke.
  15. None left. Only 2A team on NFHS was Poquoson vs Warhill.
  16. Down 14-7 with 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter, Poquoson with a 67 yd drive fueled by a 63 yd halfback pass that went to the 4 of Warhill. With 4 tries from the 4 yd line, Poquoson scores with 39 seconds left on 4th and goal from the one yard line. The extra point...........bobbled snap and no good!!! Warhill wins a thriller 14-13. Warhill advances to 7-0 on the season. Warhill will play Lafayette (its rival) the last regular season game in 3 weeks. Tomorrow Night has two huge games down East. 2A powerhouse King William plays the Bay Rivers District machine and 3A defending state champion and undefeated Lafayette of Williamsburg. The game is at KW. King William is led by Running Back Demond Claiborne, who sports offers from Michigan, Purdue, WVU, UVA, and VT, but is currently committed to Wake Forest. Also, Region B power Buckingham plays Region A Nottoway tomorrow night in another huge contest. Nottoway is led by athlete Tyler Banks, who has offers from VT, UVA, Tennessee, WVU, California, Michigan, and others. Region A, 2A, has 3 very good football teams this year in King William, Poqouson, and undefeated Nottoway. Thomas Jefferson of Richmond is 5-1, but they haven't played nearly the schedule strength as the other 3.
  17. I saw Lee High School play 2 times in its history. The 1st one was the state title game at Bailey Field (Tabb) in 1990. I was workin at the shipyard then. Lee lost 21-14 and was the better team. I don't think I've ever seen a High School football game in all of my life that poorly skewed officiating in one direction. Lee was the better team, and was the better team by quite a bit in my opinion. Tabb's former All Americans Wayne Kirby, Terry Kirby, and Chris Slade has graduated and weren't on that 1990 Tabb team. The second time I see em was in 1991 when I moved back home to Radford and watched them at Salem. Lee lost something like 37-14 to Salem in the semi's at Salem with Salem's Marcus Parker (Va Tech RB starter). Lee had a linebacker named L.S. or W. L. Carlson or Carrlon or something like that who was maybe the hardest hitting High School LB I've seen. The very first Salem play of the game, he hit Marcus Parker on a screen pass Parker caught so hard I thought he actually killed him. Parker's helmet flew off and he was out for 1 series. I have no idea how he came back in, but that was on bad linebacker Lee had.
  18. Man I don't post to much and I think this is the only thread I've ever started on this board. I didn't think it would go 12 pages. I do have the answer to my original question. The answer is yes. A single game has been played and I'm thankful for it. Go Bobcats!!!
  19. Halftime in Williamsburg, VA, and the game is on NFHS for this Bay Rivers District Matchup #11th ranked 4A Warhill 14, 2A Poquoson 7 Warhill looks a whole lot like the old Powell Valley Vikings in uniforms. They are 6-0 and definitely have some Tidewater Talent. They look Big, Strong, and Fast, but those kids from Bull Island are battling right with em. Poquoson has 2 turnovers with that wing T offense of theirs inside the 10 of Warhill in this game. Warhill seems to have tons of depth and just seems to rotate 2 and 3 guys in on the line of scrimmage on offense and on defense like clockwork.
  20. No offense, but when Graham has 3 and 4 wide receivers running wide open all night, you aren't outplaying anyone, and when the Graham QB breaks past the line of scrimmage, he's looking to run over you or around and by you, and that's a bit different of a beast than the Ridgeview QB running the ball.
  21. Final Radford 36, Carroll County 7 I know Carroll County hasn't won, but they've been in a bunch of close games. We looked the best we've looked by far this season. Christiansburg is awesome, but we still looked a bunch different tonight that all season. Roller Coaster Ride for the Bobcats. This team has some very good speed and talent, but it's just hard to tell which team will show up. Of course, playing Christiansburg this year will make lots of teams look bad.
  22. Union got a gift on the pass interference call
  23. Watch the Union QB make a play here. Ridgeview takes the mo. The union qb always takes it back and does it quick.
