They e like PV was in the 90s then Gate City was in 02 and 03. Those programs during those cycles were just on a much higher level than the region. Appomattox from 2015-20 (spring of 21 technically). Graham is in the cycle where teams may compete with them but won’t win.

I don’t doubt that they were one of the best. Both 98 PV and those Middlesboro teams sound like they would have been neck and neck.

I’m biased but that 98 PV is hard to beat. I believe Ragsdale from Giles made the comment after PV rolled them 40-0 that Giles would have had to play a near perfect game against them and PV have an off game and even that may not have even been enough for Giles to have won. And that was actually a very good Giles club. That year PV still could have won state without Julius Jones. The defense had the nickname “Killer D” courtesy of Barry Jones as DC. Killer D was chanted all the time too. As far as offense goes, PV was like a 5 headed monster. You could cut one head off and it would grow back later in the game. Meanwhile the other heads would be as fierce as the one that got cut off before its recovery. It’s worth noting in 1998 that Gate City was 3A then with 2A numbers and had an off year. 3-7 but they were still fairly competitive in some of the games they didn’t win. They gave Powell Valley a tough game in the first half but PV wore them down in 2nd half

Yeah it was pathetic. They say when Virginia teams travel to Kentucky they come off the bus down 14-0. Not literally of course. I think in 2015 and 2017 Union was down 14-3 early at Letcher Central. Those were the two Union teams that went 10-0 and lost at half state. I think in 2016 Letcher Central came to Bullitt Park and late in the game had a player get tossed as he was saying stuff to James Mitchell. They do play pretty dirty.

It’s one of the things that embarrasses me about being from Big Stone. The tendency to put the team on a pedestal. Community support is a good thing. They need our support. It’s just the inability to look at the team honestly. They also have the tendency to choke when WCYB live streams the game. No disrespect to the boys. Just honesty.

My beef with some of the other Union faithful would be the pedestal they put the team on. If you say they are playing a bad game then some mommas and daddies get their panties in a wad. They’ll say you’re disrespecting the team. I support those boys. But if they play a bad game then it’s just being honest. Doesn’t mean you don’t support them any less. The trip to Bluefield? I don’t mind it. I’ve made worse trips. Middlesboro was bad. Letcher Central was bad. I abhorred Breathitt County. When PV played Manassas Park in 2004 for state championship the 80 Manassas Park fans that were there were a mouthy bunch. Players were a class act.

I have a valued friendship with a Gate City fan. That said, there are some dumb rednecks in that fanbase that you don’t see on here. Same with some from Union. Central has keyboard warriors ( pun not intended) and a bunch of idiots who think their fecal matter doesn’t stink.

2001 PV vs Gate City regular season. Gate City returns to the LPD the beginning of the season. Only blemish was a 28-0 setback against Richlands. Powell Valley had high expectations for the season despite 2 setbacks against a good Grundy and Richlands, both of which could have gone the other way. Gate City, while very young was still very good. PV led 21-7 I believe at the half. Gate City tied it right back up in the 3rd quarter. 35 all end of regulation. GC gets ball first in OT. 4th down FG no good. PV scores first on its OT possession for the 41-35 win. GC paid us back in the playoffs.

Yeah Rye Cove and Twin Springs would make it through. They’d be fine.

That is one top notch program.

An overused fight song is On Wisconsin. I hated it. I would do Michigan’s “Hail to the Victors” over “On Wisconsin” any day. I like Washington and Lee. DB’s fight song is pretty cool too.

Powell Valley and JJ Kelly were On Wisconsin. Appalachia was an original. John I Burton, Coeburn, and Gate City Notre Dame Victory March. I think Pound and Clintwood may have been original.

I would like to see Union vs. Giles. That would be a great rivalry. Union vs Bluefield WV Union vs Volunteer and/or Cherokee. I know Union would probably spank both teams right now. But my wife is a Volunteer alum and I am a Powell Valley alum. So it would be my sort of alma mater vs my wife’s alma mater. Cherokee has a lot of arrogance about them. They used to have a somewhat decent team. The wheels have fallen off the last few years.
