  1. This game will be closer than the first one, if not only for Richlands has seen what RV has. They will game plan to stop #7 but if #13 shows up big like Friday night, it may not matter. Look for Richlands to run better this time. Watched that Va High game and they ran well.
  2. It was a good battle…think the Jenkins kid is faster. He plays with more urgency than the Beavers kid.
  3. RV fans will look back at the last several years and realize they had their most prolific rusher, passer (current kid will smash all their records) and receiver in school history in a 5 year span. Of course they ain’t that old. I always thought Haysi’s coaching was better than Clintwood’s.
  4. RV is the wild card. From what I’ve seen Union and Central downplay RV each season. RV is 2-2 against Central last four and 1-3 against Union. However, the last two against Union have been very close. RV has a chance to make some noise next season in the M7 and not just be a tough out.
  5. They have to make noise now. They will crash back to earth next season. They lose an incredible amount of talent.
  6. I like Hill in the passing game more than the running game and that is what they did last night. I’d keep Hill as WR. They are just different when Counts, Bevers and Hill are running routes.
  7. I’ve warned some RV fans about this. The Blues will say “#7 will not beat us this time.” They will man and/or bracket him and it will be up to Hill, Q’ Quinn and Counts to make plays.
  8. I didn’t realize at the time that GC was knocked out of the playoffs with this loss. Glad Igot to see Jenkins live before he moves on to W&M.
  9. I’m was discussing this with some others a few weeks ago. I was asked about Va High and what were my thoughts. I told them that they may have the most team speed in the region but weren’t battle hardened. We talked about the Class A teams and Va High running the scores up and not facing tough DL and OLs. They will learn from this and they get another shot next week. Let’s see how they handle Union’s game plan.
  10. I actually like the cross bracket…. For the first round only…then power points the rest of the way. Not sure why they didn’t go with that.
  11. Ridgeview handled this game pretty easily. Gate City had no answer for Cannon Hill who had 5 TDs. If he can stay hot like that, RV is a different team. I was looking forward to the Jenkins/ Beavers matchup and didn’t disappoint but didn’t quite live up to full expectations. I say that because RV stacked the box and pulled Beavers off the field on defense (he usually plays against the other teams #1 receiver) as Jenkins played RB most of the game. So it was as Jenkins with man coverage on Beavers and Jenkins vs zone of RV. I have to give the edge to Beavers. He finished with several catches and a spectacular catch over Jenkins in the back of the end zone for a TD. He also got a step, sometimes two, on him several other times with good routes only to be overthrown by his QB. Jenkins came right back after giving up the TD to score one of his own as he beat the RV safety for the ball, made a move and outran the rest of the team. I wish we could have seen Beavers man Jenkins up but it didn’t happen. This is the game with in the game that I love
  12. Central by at lest 2-3 scores. Grundy would need to be +4 or 5 in the turnover department to pull the upset.

Agree. I think sometimes ego gets in the way…..”that kid can’t I remember a Union fan on this board saying “Turner doesn’t change his defense for anyone…didn’t do it for Adkins…won’t do it. Except that Union did change their defense. I had more respect for Turner that he DID change his defense….ego isn’t bigger than his brain…good coach right there…put his team in a better position to win the game. Good coaches game plan to stop the other team’s best weapons.
  14. His Pops is the coach….of course he gets it. 😂

A lot of truth in that statement. Name recognition matters as well…seems like some kids repeat even if they are having a slightly down year. I looked back at the receivers from last year and am surprised Brickey from Central was 1st team all region. That was a head scratcher…. All I need to know is who the defense game plans for.

I’d argue that Jenkins (GC) is more correctly labeled as an APB which makes me curious about the criteria for positions (% of snaps??). Webb and Bradshaw are slots “Z” which are still WRs, and Harris and Beavers are the closest to a classic “X” wide receiver. Beavers has the best hands and ball skills, IMHO with the caveat that I haven’t seen Harris yet. I would throw underneath to Bradshaw all day long and wouldn’t send him deep. He is absolutely lethal YAC and the toughest to D up. Webb may be the most versatile of all of them. Union’s Jenkins is just in a very crowded WR group this season. I’d love to see some stats…that’s a big part of it. I remember back years ago that the Bristol Herald used to keep the weekly stats for passing, rushing and receiving for the local high school teams. I really wish they’d do that again.
  17. The collection of WR/ APB talent is off the charts this year…specifically WR. Haven’t seen it like this before…serious skill.
  18. Game speed: Bradshaw Straight line: Jenkins Two totally different things. Bradshaw may not run a better 40 than Jenkins but his ability to accelerate suddenly on the football field is top notch. Va High may have the best collection of speed in the region, Graham right there and, after watching Bluefield the other night, so is Bluefield. But is it game speed? Football speed (the only speed that matters): Bradshaw. Just my two cents.
  19. I’m going on a limb and saying that they will come out better in the 1st quarter this time. It looks like they found a rhythm in the 4th quarter against Bluefield.
  20. Agreed. Just have to look at the two teams that have found success winning state championships: Graham and Richlands….both had a good balance of pass and run and allowed their offenses to feature their athletes. Union’s rigid adherence to an old school offense limits some their athletes. I’ll never understand placing the culture of an offense over productivity. RV has their problem with it as well. They insist on trying to run first in a region where every damn defense is built to stop the run. Only when they realize that the first half is over and it’s not working do they go to what they are good at. That is the folly of the coaches featuring THEIR offense and not featuring the athletes. The whole concept of modern football is creating mismatches and making a defense defend the whole field. Mance, at Richlands, was a master of this and his success shows.
  21. I watched this game and RV came out flat again….getting to be a habit. They tried to spread it around and run the ball and got down 14-0, just like the Union game. But this time they actually made an effort to get it to #7. Hadn’t seen him featured like this before Kid popped off for about 200 yards and a couple of TDs according to the news sites. RV outplayed Bluefield in the 2nd half, out scoring them 19-7 and still not scoring on two trips inside the red zone (fumble and a failed fourth down). I simply don’t understand RV’s malaise in the first half of their games.
  22. They forgot how to get the ball to him.
  23. I’ve said it all year…..they want to be a power running team so bad but don’t realize they have everything they need to be a passing team. It’s borderline a waste of their talent.
  24. Agree. I told someone that if RV played them 10 times the results would be the same. There are still issues that RV hasn’t addressed: 1) subpar or non-existent S&C program 2) undisciplined play (lots of penalties..15 yarders) 3) lack of detailed positional coaching in some areas (slow to make adjustments if at all)
  25. 1) I don’t really care what others do/don’t do or say/don’t say 2) My points and facts stand
