John Battle knocked out Marion 3-0. Was kind of keeping up with Marion as I went to high school at Haysi with the Ferland girls' parents. Wise Central won a slugfest over Lee High 11-9. Eight home runs were hit in the game.
Region 1D is the expected Cumberland District final between Eastside and Rye Cove. This is the fifth meeting this season between the teams with Eastside currently leading the series 3-1.
If Childress pitches the way she did last night, Central will have a tough time Thursday.
Lee High knocks off Richlands, who many thought was the team to beat in the region. Final score 7-1. Did anybody else play today?
Central/Lebanon and Union/Marion got moved to today. Lee's bats got hot last night. Once we scored 5 in the 5th inning, I knew it was over. Richlands just didn't have the offense this year to win a shootout against a good team
I have watched quite a bit of 2A/M7 softball and baseball this season and there really aren't any standout teams.
In baseball, I have watched VA High, Marion, Chilhowie, Tazewell, Abingdon, Battle, Lebanon, and Central. The Southwest District teams have 2-3 players per team that are impact players but the overall teams just aren't solid enough to advance far. Lebanon is the best 2A team I have seen top to bottom. They are a tough lineup to get through inning by inning and have the deepest pitching rotation. Abingdon is still a solid team but, as someone said earlier, they are not at the level of previous teams. If their bats come alive in the postseason they could make a run but very inconsistent.
In softball, I have watched Battle, Lee, Lebanon, Marion, Abingdon, Union, Honaker, Gate City and Central. The M7 was kinda strange this year. Lee was the favorite pre-season but not able to live up to the hype. Battle owned the regular season but was just upended by Abingdon in the district tourney. Abingdon played very poorly defensively most of the season but seems to be really locking it down at the right time. Outside the M7, Honaker has looked solid at times but inconsistency has hurt them as well. All the others were kinda hit and miss all season. You normally have at least 1-2 dominant pitchers in the area but I have not witnessed that this season, especially after the girl from Tazewell went to TN High.
Battle had the best pitcher in the district, but they rode her all year and she looks to be worn down. Lee hasn't been able to get hits with runners on all season long. After the top 4 in the lineup, bats have been very inconsistent. Lost three 1 run games and had another loss by 2 runs. Pitching hasn't been as strong as expected either due to injuries. Can make a run in the region if bats wake up. Only team in the region to beat Richlands. Arin Rife from Richlands is the top pitcher in the region, hands down. Richlands just doesn't have much offense behind her. I wouldn't count out Central. If they can get their batters to be patient, then they can make some noise. But getting them to be patient is the problem. Union is scrappy, but I think pitching will be their downfall.
The M7 district was competitive but down a notch or two as a whole this year in my opinion. This Abingdon team is not like Abingdon teams of the past, and still no one could beat them.
Are we talking about the same district? Abingdon was 8-4 in district play, and two of those wins were one run games against Lee and Central.
Thats what i was thinking but wasn't for sure cuz of Abingdon in their district tournament. Thanks. Should be an interesting regional. Can't wait
What was the breakdown of the Southwest District this season? Honestly, the Mountain 7 was as competitive as I ever remember. Battle, Abingdon, Lee, Union, or Central all could have won the district this year.
Thanks. But im just curious. How does Lee get the 4 spot when there were 2 other teams that lost today? Does it just revert back to district standings?
Abingdon gets tossed when it comes to the Region 2A qualifiers from the Mountain 7. Lee finished 5th in the regular season, but since Abingdon finished 4th, Lee was the next 2A school in the standings.
Why are these kids playing travel softball during their high school softball season? Absolutely crazy
Because some parents only care about themselves and don't care what happens with their school team as long as their kid gets theirs. Plus, there is a lot of drama with that program.
I would've agreed completely with this a month ago. But maybe only slightly now. They have a lot of young freshman in the lineup that are starting to hit their stride. Over half the lineup is hitting over or near .300. Also over half have went deep this year. So bats are coming alive.
The Eastside game they were off. Not taking anything from Eastside. They're solid. But coach started the freshman on the rubber that hadn't seen action in a while. I think the first game was more indicative the level they're on. Was tied in the 7th. They were also missing a key bat in first game. Again not saying Richlands will make ot to state. But i think they should give any team they face a hard time
The freshman might not had pitched for Richlands for a little bit, but she threw over 230 pitches in travel ball two days before. Richlands will be a factor, but it will be because of Rife.
Even after an uncharacteristically bad game by Richlands (softball) yesterday, I still think they have a good shot of coming out of the region and maybe going pretty deep in the playoffs.
You're right, physical abuse of a child is far less egregious than driving drunk. What was I thinking? /s
I'll say it again because you seem to be pretty dense. Two wrongs don't make a right!!! Whataboutism has no place in the discussion of child abuse.
By the way, justifying the physical abuse of a 15 year old kid based on something that happened in a college basketball game 32 years ago is pretty absurd!
Don't reach too much further. You might hurt yourself
Appropriate behavior for public school employees when dealing with public school students, whether those students belong to them or not, is something that is clearly defined by state law within the public school ecosystem. Kevin Clifford was fired instantly from Patrick Henry - Roanoke more than 20 years ago for grabbing a football player in a similar fashion.
Does a drunk driver get a pass when he crashes into a family of four because he's never crashed into anyone before? Maybe a better analogy, would the Algebra teacher be forgiven after grabbing a student by the chest, screaming in that students face, shaking them, and slap punch them in the back as they shove that student down the hallway? Why should rules differ because one is in a classroom setting while the other is on an athletic field? Rules are in place to handle these situations and shouldn't be ignored based on who the child/victim was or who the aggressor was. As I stated above, two wrongs never make a right!!!
I'm not going to advocate on a meaningless message board for someone losing his job . But if I were a member of that community, I would be questioning those elected to govern the public school system in Bristol pretty hard.
You're right, a better analogy was the one with the Algebra teacher because using the drunk driving analogy was absurd.
The video I posted is full of 18, 19, and 20 year old boys. Not "grown men".
Has Gobble had a history of doing things like that with players that aren't his son? Him grabbing his son by his jersey and getting into his face for acting like a jackwagon isn't like the Woody Hayes incident, or the incident at Ridgeview last year. There was no violence whatsoever in the video of Gobble.

Sorry for the lack of clarification. Every thing I said before “on the softball side” was referring to baseball. And to answer the other question yes they brought her in later and I don’t exactly know how much of the damage was done off her except for the “home run”
Lebanon scored all of their runs before Compton entered the game
After a couple of games in the season here are some of my thoughts. If abingdon and Lebanon can both clean up their game a little bit I feel like they are state contenders. Marion is solid, tazewell is solid, Virginia high is decent but they should get better as the season goes on, Central is decent, and Richlands could probably beat just about anyone in the region if hale is having a good day on the mound. On the softball side i feel like Lebanon and Richlands are competing for the region and then everyone else is playing for 3rd place
On the softball side, you seem to be discounting the Mountain 7 teams awfully early in the season
We should be solid if we can stay healthy. Return all but 1 player from a team that made the Region 2D semifinals last year. The Mtn 7 should come down to us and Battle.

I cannot agree more with this. I've been saying this for years.
