Emily Edwards of Galax won her second consecutive state championship in Shot Put with a throw of 40'-11-1/2". Breaking her Class 1 state record of 40'-6" from a year ago. She's headed to Australia this summer as part of the Junior Olympics.

Her dad played football and baseball at Haysi and Emory & Henry.

    was her dad Kevin Edwards

  2. the one thing that stood out in the LCA vs Abingdon game was how well coached LCA's team was,  LCA's wing players fed the low post with perfection to Stout for her power drop step for easy layup after layup!!   Later in the 3rd and 4th quarter the Mills girl went average hunting and took some bad shots but they were a very good fundementally sound team!!!

I still don't think it's that simple. The LCA court ruling makes it a virtual impossibility that VHSL can reprimand anyone for recruiting. If LCA is allowed to participate in VHSL activities without having to give up it's ability to recruit anyone from anywhere, VHSL can't stop anyone else from doing so.

As I said in another thread, I urge anyone to go read and watch YouTube videos about how this has played out in Pennsylvania. We're exactly where they were in 2018.

yes but how hard did the VHSL realistically fight this,  court battles cost money.  does the VHSL have enough money to enforce its rules and regulations.

Lol... I didn't come out and say that, but the thought had crossed my mind.  And for the record, I like Robin and am not ashamed to say he's the wizard of high school basketball coaches in SWVA.

I mean... we're seeing it everywhere these days....

Star player transfers from one Cumberland school to another and plays against her former school in the same week.

In upper east Tennessee, a girl transferred to a Knoxville private school right before the season started, realized quickly she was going to be a little fish in a big pond, so transferred back.... before January and played immediately.

It's not just JM.... it's beginning to happen everywhere.  Ridgeview girls may be the only team left in the postseason where all of their players were born and raised in the area they play.

I totally agree,  all this transfer issues are getting out of hand!!!  several schools in the area have benefitted significantly from this practice and some coaches have been guilty of recruiting these local players!!

I don't think this issue is that simple. The LCA lawsuit against VHSL was shocking to the system for an organization that had quite literally, never been challenged before. To lose that lawsuit in glaring fashion has sent VHSL reeling and they have absolutely no idea how to put the toothpaste back in the tube.

I've said it before and I will say it again, nothing is stopping any other program in Virginia from doing exactly what JM and/or Ty White is doing. Especially not VHSL at the present time.

the VHSL is out for the VHSL and nothing else,  they will not spend money to fight any of these lawsuits!!!!  They could stop all of this if they wanted,  If there not willing to do what is right then they need to fold and reorganize into another league!!!  Also there may not be any money there to fight this as well!!!

Scotty Vermillion was very outspoken about JM a few years ago when Gate City were the Justices victim that year.  Now that the girls program is doing the same... I will be very interested in hearing coach Dotson's take IF they first get past Ridgeview AND IF they lose to JM as bad as most people are beginning to realize is the very real possibility.

so your saying dotson is getting a taste of his own medicine!!!  lol

Auburn shouldn't be bothered by that. Their home gym has 50 plus feet of space between the wall and baseline. They also grow up playing at Blacksburg, which has 20 or so rows of bleachers behind the basket.

I do believe that Lebanon's floor is full actual length as well!!!  lots of gym's in the area actually have non full length courts!!!

On the girls side of things, I see potential for many local teams to move on to the semifinals.

In 1A, Eastside is on a roll right now and I think they will handle Fort Chiswell by 10+ and Honaker should be able to snap back from the loss to Eastside to get past a scrappy George Wythe team.

As for 2A, Central should have no problem with Liberty Bedford. Ridgeview may have their hands full with Floyd County. Floyd has played well all season but I think this game will come down to how well they handle the defensive pressure that Ridgeview brings every game.

In the 3A bracket, Abingdon pulled off back-to-back upsets over Lord Botetourt and Carroll County in order to host Turner Ashby.  If they continue with that type of play, they should be able to advance to the semifinals where they will likely have a rematch with Carroll County who should handle LCA.

Once again, girls basketball in SWVA, especially region D, is loaded.

I understand Abingdon's wins being considered an upset based on seedings,  Abingdon dominated those 2 games!!!  Abingdon has a great shot at winning Tuesday but this is the state tourney and you don't count any team out!!!!

  9. Pretty sure honaker has had several players as has wise, abingdon, PH, ridgeview, TV, grundy, haysi, and others have had girls play college basketball with several playing at the D1 level!!!  GC has a player at ETSU,  Wise has had several play D1, CC has Ervin going D1 this year but a few years back one that played at VT so not sure where you got your info!!!!

Trivette is a rare talent and a game changer and will make a difference on whatever team she plays for, the Reynolds girl, not so much. The one thing regarding transfers that no one likes to talk about, is what hometown girl was pushed aside and riding the pine for a mediocre player to have playing time? Hometown kids getting screwed by transfers like the Reynolds girl is a shame. That being said, Go Falcons!

not sure what planet you live on but Reynolds is not mediocre player and was a big factor in this team winning a Region D championship!!!
