Is there a radio station that will cover Union @ John Battle?

Bingo. It does not do well to dwell on what might have been.

Right. I wonder what statement that was. Also, a lot of the posters on preps have some interesting views on a lot of things.

Last year’s Union team that was reloading from the 2015 team who made Final Four was demolished pretty soundly in third round.

For me it would be 1999 JJ Kelly 19 Powell Valley 14. I was in 6th grade and they snapped about a 3 year winning streak.

What is the wackiest upset you have ever seen or heard of in high school football?

Transitive property does not work all the time. That’s the only thing 93 has said with which I agree. That said, his arguments are actually hurting his case. Apparently Union hasn’t put up numbers against a good team compared to John Battle. The only three teams that Battle has played that could be considered good are teams that have beaten Battle. These teams beat the Trojans by double-digit scores. Two of Battle’s losses were to common opponents between Union and Battle. Union beat them both by double digits. Union beat Ridgeview 34-19. Union beat Abingdon 35-7. Again, by the numbers it doesn’t look good for his argument at all. It it took a 4th quarter rally for Battle to make a horrible Gate City team go away, a team Union blanked 48-0. GC has recently given Union all they can handle too but not this season. Again, transitive property or not, ‘93’s argument is not convincing people that he or she is right. It is actually hurting 93’s argument.

To predict that it won’t be close is not supposed to be an insult. It is an honest prediction and it is probably reasonable. I suppose the way Union took care of business against Ridgeview and Abingdon is not putting up numbers against good teams. Union beat a team who is 6A in Tennessee (4A in Virginia). While that team is not actually great(they were way down) I don’t see Battle having a good game against them. Battle hasn’t really beaten anyone good. Also, if you want talk numbers or if someone wants to bring up the transitive property, Battle would be doomed. It took a 4th quarter rally for Battle to put away the worst ever Gate City team. I am pretty sure the score at the end of 3rd quarter was 28-27 in favor of Battle. It was still anybody’s game. Union’s game against Gate City was decided early in the second quarter. So compared to Battle, how can you say Union hasn’t put up good numbers against good teams. Abingdon put up 35 on John Battle. Union beat them 35 to 7 and the score could have easily been 49-7. Not always indicative of what will happen but by those numbers, it does not look good for Battle against Union. 34 points on a Ridgeview team who beat Battle 24-7 does not help your case either. Sure Battle put 40 on Lee but they also allowed 28 whereas Union allowed 6 and that play was a busted play. Union didn’t have to score 40 to make Lee go away. Again, if you are going to say Union hasn’t put good numbers on good teams compared to Battle, the numbers of both teams suggest that you are screwed. No disrespect to Battle but I don’t see this being close. I don’t think Battle will be able to move the ball very well.

I think they are the best until officially taken down. I can see them losing a game in which the other team plays them closely, whoever that may be.

Battle is not a bad team. Union is excellent. I think Union is just gonna be a bit too tough. Union 38, John Battle 16

Union probably will not lose to Battle. Battle is more than likely outmatched but if you take a great team like Union and a Battle team who really is not bad, then all it will take is for Union to come in overconfident and make mistakes then Battle getting a few breaks and capitalizing and then there’s an upset. Union should win but I definitely would watch out.

Jealousy? Ok. Let us take a look at that allegation, shall we? I have said this several times. Gate City went 3-7 in 2015. They went 5-5 in regular season and lost the first round of the playoffs last year. That makes the overall record 5-6. You are 0-9. Though we Union fans want you guys to win tomorrow for points, you all might lose. 0-10. Your record from 2015 to the Present is a ghastly 8-22. I don’t believe anyone wants to be you guys right now. If this were 96, 97, 99, 00, 01,02, 03, 04, 08, 09, 10, and 14 then yes it possibly could be jealousy. The only two teams who couldn’t have been jealous of you in 97 are the former PV and Appy teams and fan bases because both teams beat you. In 01, PV, Richlands, and Floyd County beat you. No jealousy there. In 04, PV beat you. No jealousy. Richlands and Bluefield beat you in 10 but you all won state. In 2014, you all were capable of winning it and I had you making it there but Richlands stopped you 3rd round. Since then, nobody wants to be you. They may be jealous of old success but right now that is all you all have. Your past. In comparison to Tennessee Vols fans like me, all our Vols’ past is all we Vols fans and the football program have for now. Go and support your team. They need their fans and parents right now. Quit making pretentious statements that do nothing to help the reputation of GC fans.

If things continue to be this way for Gate City then it very well could be awhile before they will sniff another football State Championship. I think Canes00 made a quite reasonable prediction based on the state of things. This is denial.

Not everyone who dislikes GC is jealous. Much of the disdain comes from the arrogance of a good portion of the fan base. Then again, another good portion of the fan base is pretty cool. The arrogant fans seem to overshadow the good ones. Are people jealous of GC for their success in the past? Of course. As a PV grad, I can attest to the fact that winning programs will bring out jealousy among other fan bases. They also bring out arrogance among their own fan bases. For that reason a lot of people will enjoy the fans of that team throw fits when said program’s success QUICKLY dwindles like GC’s program is doing. I am pretty sure that a few weeks ago a GC fan on here said that the GC fans deserve wins. I don’t remember exactly WHO said it. First off, fans of every team deserve NOTHING. The athletes of that program deserve success only as long as they work for it. The fans are just there to watch it. I am sure many of the GC athletes are working hard. Kudos to the ones who are sticking with their team in their moment of turmoil. Statements claiming that the fan base deserves to watch a winning program and claiming jealousy everytime someone even remotely criticizes Gate City are reminding people why they dislike GC or have disliked them before. I have never seen UVAObserver get disgruntled on here over Graham’s 70-0 loss at the hands of Gate City. A lot of teams and their fan bases would normally be sour about something like that anyway until they avenged it and then they probably get over it after they get revenge. UVAO is a classy guy so I would be surprised if he kept going on about it. I am sure a lot of people from Graham—players and fans—would love to avenge that loss in a regulation game. It seems like in 2015 a lot of GC faithful wanted Bill Houseright to step down. I am neither taking up for him nor am I saying those who wanted it were right but they got what they asked for. Is GC any better off since he stepped down?

You knew that a Band dork like myself would ask sooner or later. Out of all the high school teams you have watched around here (MINUS Richlands as you are a Richlands alumnus) which band has had the most positively interesting traditions at football games? Why?

You are possibly in the midst of your first 0-10 season. You definitely are in the midst of no better than 1-9. You went 3-7 in 2015 and missed the playoffs. You went 5-5 last year and lost the first round of the playoffs leading to a 5-6 record. You are in your third consecutive losing season and from what many GC fans are saying number 4 in a row may come next year. Whatever superiority is in the GC program is very quickly dwindling.

Union 33, Abingdon 13 like the Ridgeview and Lee High games, this game will feature a close first half and Union pulls away in second half.

We decided to leave and head back to the apartment in Roanoke when Narrows went up 48-12. Even though CC didn’t win, we got to see my wife’s students and show support.
