  1. [ QUOTE ] If the lineman are in a two point stance, it is illegal to cut, if in a three or four point stance it is legal to cut. Only in college can you cut from a two point stance. Always illegal to cut a linebacker on a blitz, no matter what stance. Just a lazy way to block or be taught to block. [/ QUOTE ] There is nothing in the rules about two point or three point stances. The NFHS rules states that both the blocker and blockee must be inside the 2 yard by four yard "free blocking zone" and that the zone disappears once the ball has left the zone. Therefore you cannot normally block below the waist on a shotgun snap since the ball leaves the zone almost immediately.
  2. [ QUOTE ] I loved this especially when the poster mentioned my kid in particular "64"..... The little single A school @Hurley under real game conditions man handled East Ridge..I predicted this would blow up in ER's face them playing what they thought would be a push over....The 10 and 10 ER got 6 points to Hurleys o under real game conditions Hurley Beat ER 8-6 and drove the ball at will...One thing botherd me terribly..The offensive line and if they where coached this way that new college guru you guy's are so proud of needs sent back to Pikeville if all he can do is have those mammoth sissys dive at defensive players knees...All they done all night was cut block..On one particular play the left defensive tackle of Hurley was 2 steps into the back feild and a ER lineman just lunged at his knees....That is the most pathetic sorry excuse of line play Ive ever witnessed. If this game had been a 4 quarter game I bet you guys wouldnt have cut that big 64 many more times before he started grinding his cleats into your hands or worse...If you go for somebodys knees dont cry when you get your neck stepped on because it's coming...Im ashamed that a AAA school would have to stoop so low as to play that way against an A school. And before somebody hollers "cut blocking is legal" yea it's legal but it's chicken $h*t also...And I pray that the moderators will leave this post along and not censor it.... Post by football nut on BGR... " [/ QUOTE ] "Two steps into the backfield" is beyond the free blocking zone and illegal as heck! It should have been flagged. Keep in mind I was not there but just going on what was posted. A delayed cut is always illegal in high school football.
  3. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Youre relying on a line that let your quarterback suffer two concussions? Good luck. [/ QUOTE ] that was last year.and oh boy what a difference a year makes.david is pretty smart too,and behind a much better line,i dont see him getting hit anywhere near as much as last year.i was saying i hope he doesnt play defense were he will be more vulnerable. [/ QUOTE ] You gotta be kidding! The most vulnerable position in the game of football is Quarterback. When the QB is passing or handing off he is wide open for attack and vitually defenseless. At least on defense he can deliver the blow rather than receive it.
  4. He's Back....wonder if his idiot son will join him in this new gig.... NEW MANCHESTER -- Tony Filberto is back! The former Weir High football coach, returns for his second go-around with Oak Glen. Filberto, who was approved by the Board of Education with a 4-1 vote, is no stranger to Oak Glen. He was the head coach of the Bears from 1977-82 and currently is a driver’s education instructor at the John D. Rockefeller Career Center. He replaces Jeff Woofter, who coached two seasons, and stepped down after the 2007 season. Filberto has his work cut out for him. The Bears have complied a 6-43 record in the past five seasons. Filberto last coached at Weir High, when he led the Red Riders to the 2004 Class AA state semifinal, before losing at Bluefield. The "East Liverpool Review" reports Filberto was one of seven candidates interviewed for the job.
  5. Looks like the coaching staff at BHS could use a clinic on how to penetrate a zone defense. Otherwise we could be in for a very long regular season and a very short stay in the playoffs.
  6. Lifting is not mandatory but then neither is playing time.
  7. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Leaving Brooks and Bowes off the 1st team defense is criminal. Those two kids dominated all season long just aak anyone of the 13 opponents Bluefild played. Someone was really asleep at the switch....the so-called sportswriters in this state should be ashamed of themselves right now. [/ QUOTE ] I can see that Bowes didnt get first team. I dont think he in any way deserved first team honors the way Brooks did. Brooks dominated each game this year. If Jake Lilly got first team honors, Brooks should have too. Our three inner linebackers were nasty. Brooks, Lilly and Wassum lead each game in tackles. [/ QUOTE ] The REASON the linebackers lead in tackles was that the nose guard (Bowes) was a beast up front. With his quickness, he caused bad snaps and was a concern for both guards and center all year long, leaving the backers free to find the ball and make the play. He was robbed by not making the first team D-line, plain and simple.
  8. The Eagle will carry the game locally with a pregame show starting at six not sure if they will be able to do the internet feed since Metronews owns the rights but I am sure that Metronews will provide a feed to the internet you just may have to search for the link.
  9. [ QUOTE ] Bluefield definitely has a very nice field and could easily hold the state championships but the problems is in hotels. There arent very many places for visitors to stay. I have talked to many people about this situation and this is the reason they have given me. [/ QUOTE ] Have you been to Wheeling? It is not exactly the motel and hotel capital of the world. Most people stay in Ohio.
  10. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] sooooooooooooooo, if graham / richlands play it will be at Mitchell stadium? [/ QUOTE ] No I think that one will be in Richlands since they have more "power points". If I understand the VA playoff system correctly. Can anyone clear that up for us? [/ QUOTE ] Game will be played at the higher seed...RICHLANDS. #1 Richlands #2 Graham #3 Marion #4 Martinsville (probably)... [/ QUOTE ] But the seeding is based on "power points" correct????
  11. [ QUOTE ] Musselman kicked a terrible kickoof to blfd (to start the game) and JR touched the ball then let bounces down the field, and musselman player picks it up and run in the endzone whileJr watched for 6 and field goal = 7... we lost by 7. [/ QUOTE ] I don't recall him touching it....I think he just thought it was like a punt and if he did not touch it Bluefield would get the ball. He simply did not know or forgot that a kick off does not have to be touched once it goes 10 yards the kicking team can and did recover. Huge brain cramp on his part...but it was the difference in the ball game. Very seldom is the opening kick off the turning point of a ball game but in this case it sure was.
  12. [ QUOTE ] sooooooooooooooo, if graham / richlands play it will be at Mitchell stadium? [/ QUOTE ] No I think that one will be in Richlands since they have more "power points". If I understand the VA playoff system correctly. Can anyone clear that up for us?
  13. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] im getting sick of the officating stuff. Refs dont cheat. [/ QUOTE ] Were you in Charleston Friday night??? You may change your mind... There were several nonpartisan observers at the game sitting close to me...they were fans of a Charleston area AAA high school, had no ties to either Bluefield or Scott...even they couldn't believe some of the calls the officials were making...one even made the comment, and I'll quote him, "Good Lord, how much did Scott pay these guys tonight???" [/ QUOTE ] I was there, and yeah some of the calls were VERY questionable. Including the out of bounds plays, ansels catch for a td that was brought back was right in front of me and i thought he didnt step out, however, white shoes with a white line can be confusing. Like i said some of the calls i thought werent correct. That being said, i see things through biased beaver eyes and a lot of times disagree with the calls. However, i also have a lot of close relations with officials and have watched hundreds (maybe thousands?) of games with an official by my side explaining a lot about officating. There are reasons why some things get called, and some dont. People who do not understand these things often get upset, and complain about what really is the right call. Im not trying to say i know more about football, but i know more about officiating, and i know what to look for on each play. For example, the 5 yard facemask on will cole was the right call. When the defender pulled him down he pulled straight down. From what i saw cole's head did not jerk any direction, nor did it twist. In this case, thats only a 5 yarder in high school. Its not the grab and let go rule like you see in college and the pros. Yes, there is offensive encroachment. and yes, the play is stopped when any defensive player goes into the neutral zone. you dont get free play like in college and pros. I do think that Scott should have had a late hit call somewhere in that game, a lot of the hits were very questionable... These are just some of the things that i heard at the game that people were complaining about. a VERY VERY VERY SMALL percentage of officials cheat. I only know one, and he cheated FOR BLUEFIELD for years. He is the reason Richlands says they got cheated (too young to remember if they really did, but i feel as if they did). He is retired, and actually was at the game and sat two rows in front of me. The perception that bluefield fans have that they get cheated every game is sad. It almost goes for all fans at every school. Refs are human. They make mistakes. Everyone does. [/ QUOTE ] If he was pulled to the ground by the face mask it should have been a 15 yarder by rule....see below 9.4.3 Situation H: A1 is tackled by B1 who: (a) grasps A1’s face mask/helmet opening momentarily and lets go; (b) has his hand brush across A1’s face mask; © pulls A1 to the ground by grasping A1’s face mask/helmet opening. Ruling: There is no penalty in (b). There is a five-yard penalty in (a) and a 15-yard penalty in ©.
  14. Let's look at the rule folks: Rule 4 Section 2 Art 2(f) applies. The ball had clearly come to rest and should have been blown dead. The refs blew it. Football Rules Book 2006 :: Rule 4 :: Section 2 :: Art 2 Rules & Cases Directory Football Rules Book 2006 Rule 4: Ball in Play, Dead Ball and Out of Bounds Section 2: Dead Ball And End Of The Down Article 2 Art. 2... The ball becomes dead and the down is ended: a. When a runner goes out of bounds, is held so his forward progress is stopped or allows any part of his person other than hand or foot to touch the ground. Exception 1. The ball remains live if, at the snap, a place-kick holder with his knee(s) on the ground and with a teammate in kicking position catches or recovers the snap while his knee(s) is on the ground and places the ball for a kick, or if he rises to advance, hand, kick or pass. Exception 2. The ball remains live if, at the snap, a place-kick holder with his knee(s) on the ground and with a teammate in kicking position rises and catches or recovers an errant snap and immediately returns his knee(s) to the ground and places the ball for a kick or again rises to advance, hand, kick or pass. NOTE: The ball becomes dead if the place-kick holder muffs the snap or fumbles and recovers after his knees have been off the ground, and he then touches the ground with other than hand or foot while in possession of the ball. b. When a live ball goes out of bounds. c. When any forward pass (legal or illegal) is incomplete or is simultaneously caught by opposing players. d. When any legal free kick or scrimmage kick: 1. Which is not a scoring attempt or which is a grounded scoring attempt, breaks the plane of R’s goal line. 2. Which is a scoring attempt, while in flight touches a K player in R’s end zone, or after breaking the plane of R’s goal line has apparently failed. EXCEPTION: If a scoring attempt kick touches an upright, crossbar, an official or R player in the end zone and caroms through the goal, the touching is ignored and the attempt is successful. e. When any loose ball: 1. Is simultaneously caught or recovered by opposing players. 2. Is on the ground motionless and no player attempts to secure possession. 3. Touches, or is touched by, anything inbounds other than a player, substitute, replaced player, an official, the ground or authorized equipment. In this case the ball will be put in play in accordance with the procedure for an inadvertent whistle as in 4-2-3b. f. When the kickers catch or recover any free kick anywhere, and when the kickers catch or recover a scrimmage kick beyond the neutral zone and when the kickers are first (i.e., before any touching by the receivers) to touch a scrimmage kick after it has come to rest beyond the neutral zone and between the goal lines. g. Following a valid or invalid fair-catch signal given by any member of the receiving team when a scrimmage kick or free kick is caught or recovered by any member of the receiving team beyond, in or behind the neutral zone. h. When a touchdown or field goal occurs. i. During a try if B secures possession or as soon as it is apparent that a kick has failed to score. j. When an official sounds his whistle inadvertently. k. When the helmet comes completely off a player who is in possession of the ball.
  15. [ QUOTE ] I'm not talking about sports fans or second hand scouting. There were so many important splinter lickers there that I thought it was a pine sap licking contest going on. It looked like little Oregon. [/ QUOTE ] Is English your native language? Does anybody else understand this dude?
  16. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I would rather start with the weaker part of the schedule. This gives you a chance to work on things you need to do to get ready for the harder part of the schedule... [/ QUOTE ] I agree. [/ QUOTE ] Great plan....seems to be working for you. You all get to Wheeling just about every year don't you?
  17. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I don't think you'll have anything to worry about this year. There are gonna be a lot of close games, some we'll be behind when the final horn goes off...... [/ QUOTE ] Thats kinda what I have been hearing around camp. Hope they arent THAT close though..lol [/ QUOTE ] Geez...what happened in Richlands, went from having the "best defense in school history" to barely squeaking by GC....did the reality check bounce?
  18. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] the fence will be 18 inches behind the concrete curb. [/ QUOTE ] What will the over/under be on broken ankles/legs...hope the City has their liability insurance paid up... [/ QUOTE ] The curb at the closest point to the sideline or endline is at least 15 feet this is more than enough room for safety and much more than any other stadium in the area has. Pro stadiums only have 5 yards in a lot of venues. [/ QUOTE ] I've seen many ocassions at the pre-turf Mitchell Stadium where the play ended up in the fence...just a matter of time before someone breaks a leg/ankle, or worse, with a drop-off only 18" from the fence. As I said, I hope the city has paid their liability insurance before the season starts... [/ QUOTE ] I have seen that too, but it was always at the back corners where the fence was less than six feet from the corner of the endzone. Those corners now will be 15 feet from the corner the new configuration will be much safer in that regard.
  19. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] the fence will be 18 inches behind the concrete curb. [/ QUOTE ] What will the over/under be on broken ankles/legs...hope the City has their liability insurance paid up... 20. [ QUOTE ] After all the mumbo jumbo of Turf, lights, field house, hot tub and recliner seat at Ernie Hicks stadium, and all they ended up with was some lights!!! I think the state championship was great but it cant bring miracles. [/ QUOTE ] I cannot imagine how big that field house would have to be to get all those egos inside one building.
  21. [ QUOTE ] let me just say, that "the new stadium turf" is in fact BLUEFIELD'S NEW stadium turf, and the only reason they changed the midfield logo from the state of WV with a star where bluefield is to WV and Va. is because the state of WV won't provide bluefield high schol with adequate enough funds to support the stadium by themselves...basically all we want from graham is there money. Mitchell is in WEST VIRGINIA. nobody thinks of mitchell as Graham's stadium. get over yourself and remember next time youre talking about your new color jerseys, you're wearing them in BLUEFIELD BEAVER TERRITORY. NUFF SAID. [/ QUOTE ] FYI the stadium belongs to the City of Bluefield, WV and does not belong to either school. Both counties rent the stadium from the City to use for their games. It is not a Beaver stadium or a Gman stadium, it is a City stadium and no state funds, from either state is used for it. You can thank Mrs. June Shott for the new turf.
  22. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] But our coach dosent win where it matters the most...In charleston WV [/ QUOTE ] And being that Princeton has NO CHANCE of ever making it back to Charleston (Woodrow Wilson), he would be a perfect fit as the Tigers new head coach... [/ QUOTE ] Now wait a minute...they have TWO chances to go to Charleston...Slim and None.
  23. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] If I am correct, June Shott paid for the turf at Concord, like she did the media center at Lane Stadium. The Shott Foundation funded the renovations to Mitchell Stadium back in 1998. They may have done Pocy, I am not sure. The Shott Foundation also paid for improvements to Graham Rec. Park and Harmony Acres Pool a few years ago. The two are not the same thing. [/ QUOTE ] June Shott IS The Shott Foundation... [/ QUOTE ] No she isn't....two totally different entities. June is not even on the Shott Foundation. Trust me on this one.
  24. Be very careful in letting someone pay for those rings. You could compromise the student's amateur athletic status. From the VHSL Handbook Rule 28-8-1 (g) Accepts merchandise, prizes or awards having a retail value greater than that permitted by the amateur athletic governing body regulating amateur status in that sport. If that governing body has no limit, the maximum value of merchandise, prizes or awards shall be $500 per event.
  25. The key to this game...just as in most games will come down to three things. 1. Turnovers 2. Penalties 3. Special teams Bluefield thus far this season has had problems with all three of these things and it has cost them. Hopefully, they will come out ready to play and very focused and put this one into the win column. If not I thing the season is over for the Beavers. Only time will tell.
