  2. Montana has a little more than West Virginia, they had only 1 school make the list. Oregon has over 1300, 5 on the list. Pennsylvania could only get 7 out of all their schools. Horrible would be (though not suprising) Lousiana....1.
  3. http://www.tricities.com/tristate/tri/sports.apx.-content-articles-TRI-2007-05-17-0015.html VHS boys, girls win Highlands track meet Thursday, May 17, 2007 - 12:00 AM BY JIMMY MOORE SPORTS CORRESPONDENT BRISTOL, Va. – Virginia High’s boys and girls defended their turf here Wednesday as they swept the field in the Highlands District Track Meet. In boys action, the Bearcats finished at the top of the field with 179 points followed by Abingdon (145.5), Lee High (81) and Marion (77.5). The Virginia High girls used a 1-2-3 finish in the shot put on the way to the victory with 150 points. Lee High finished second (132) followed by Marion (82). After watching his boys team earn enough points for the title, Bearcat coach Terry Smith said he was hoping to see his team also post a regional time on the days’ final event, the 4x100 meter relay which they won with a time of 44.05. "Our relay teams have really worked hard this year," said Smith. "Our distance runners are getting better and our sprinters are getting pretty good. "We had a few false starts today but we’ve got to overcome stuff like that. Our kids didn’t hang their heads, they let me cry. They did a great job composing themselves and coming back. "We were third in the region last year and this year we are hoping to do better but it is going to be pretty tough. Abingdon has probably got the better distance runners but we probably have a little more depth in the sprinters. We also did a great job with our jumpers today." Curtis Price, head coach of the Abingdon boys, said he was still proud of his team’s effort despite coming up short. "They gave it their all," said Price. "We won both hurdle events with Ross Ellis and we had the 100-meter won and our kid [Zach Smith] fell down [and still finished second]. "It was a good day for us. We have a small team but we also have a bunch of winners." Lester Byington carries the title of head coach of the Virginia High girls but he said a pair of his assistants play a huge part in the success of the Bearcats. "Coach Sara Debusk works with our jumpers and Dennis Huffman works with our field [event] people. I am coach in name but if it wasn’t for Sara working with our jumpers and Dennis working with our shot and discus people ... "We’ve only got five girls that do field [events] and we’ve got seven girls that run. We don’t have the numbers so it all boils down to us having these good assistants." Lee High’s girls coach, Gary Wolfe, said under the circumstances, he was fairly pleased with the outcome. "We only have three seniors and the other girls are fairly young," said Wolfe. "We have been learning a lot this year but you still need the numbers. "In track, second, third, fourth and fifth [place finishes] really add up big time." Virginia High’s Allen Eccleston garnered a trio of gold medals in winning the 100-meter dash (11.52) and the 200-meter dash (23.22), and also ran the anchor leg in the 4x100 relay (44.05) that bettered the school record (44.1). Tonya Stallard led the Virginia High girls with four first-place medals. The senior captured both the 100-meter (17.07) and 300-meter hurdles (50.82) and also won the 200-meter dash (27.64). She also collected 10 points in the triple jump with a leap of 33 feet, 8 inches. Lee High’s Hannah Audia played a huge part in her team’s second-place finish with her 54 points. After posting a pair of second-place finishes in the long jump (14-7) and high jump (4-4), the senior brought home gold in the 400-meter dash (1:01.39) and the 800-meter run (2:23.06). Abingdon’s Ross Ellis was also a dual winner, capturing the 110-meter (16.35) and 300-meter (43.77) hurdles. Virginia High’s Randy White also captured two gold medals, winning the discus with a throw of 141-7 and the shot put at 47-9.

  6. He withdrew from the draft back in January and decided to come back for his senior season.
  7. I don't see anything in the rules that says you can't "talk" about another team.
  8. Lee High was on lockdown today too. Threat made about a shooting was going to happen today.
  9. Didn't see anything in the papers about the game (baseball) from Thursday. Only stats I seen (on Abingdon's website) was Abingdon had 3 hits and the only run came from Ramey's homerun. Anything else....who pitched for Abingdon, scoring for Lee, hits, etc?
  10. More California schools seeing it... 36 Cal. schools on lockdown I heard there was an incident with a call that came into the Walmart in Lee County a couple of nights ago in reference to the Va Tech shootings too.
  11. ETSU will be holding another candelight vigil tonight, from 10-11 p.m. at the Belltower. Wear maroon or orange.
  12. Just curious, but it Hagerman still coaching up there at Phelps?

  14. [ QUOTE ] “I think it was an unfortunate loss for us, but it’s not the end of the world,†Virginia High head coach Jerry Goodpasture said. “We’ll probably see them again in the regionals and we’ll beat ‘em next time we see ’em.†Goodpasture declined any further comment. [/ QUOTE ]
  15. Anyone see the game yesterday? Any info? Mainly just wondering how Lee looked.
  16. The BDT was wrong on the date, the game is tonight as first posted by bucfan. They left off a couple of players too in their list.... BY TIM HAYES Bristol Herald Courier Castlewood senior Drew Justice would like to play basketball in college. He will get another chance to impress some college scouts tonight. The inaugural Southwest Virginia boys’ basketball All-Star game is set for tonight at Castlewood High School. The event will also feature a slam dunk contest and 3-point shootout, while the game is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m. "I heard there will be some college scouts there, so hopefully a bunch of us can play well and get recruited," Justice said. "I would like to go somewhere and play." Players invited include Justice, Adam Hood (Rye Cove), Mark Dockery (Twin Springs), Matthew Baldwin (Twin Valley), Thomas Larimer (Chilhowie), C.J. Tillie (Virginia High), Grundy’s Jimmy Ashby and many more of the area’s top seniors. Twin Valley’s Brian Moore and Castlewood’s Aaron Williams will serve as the coaches. Several college scouts were also invited to attend. "It will be cool to play with some of those players," Justice said. "Instead of playing against some of those guys, I’ll get to play on the same team. There will be some good players on the floor." The event was the brainchild of St. Paul coach Patrick Damron. "This is something that I’ve talked about for a couple of years and I think our area needs something like this," Damron said. "I’ve talked to some of my fellow coaches, particularly this year. "We wanted to get these kids the exposure and recognition they deserve. Overall, it will be a good experience and we basically want to promote basketball in this area." The game gained approval from the Virginia High School League and Virginia High School Coaches Association. Damron hopes the event becomes an area tradition. "We have different ideas of what we might want to do in the future," Damron said. "This is the first annual game and something that we want to continue every year." For Justice, it will be the first game he’s played since a 49-44 loss to James River on March 3 in the state quarterfinals. Justice averaged 13.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game for the Blue Devils, who were ranked first in the state for most of the season. But an injury to junior point guard Patrick Fisher hampered Castlewood down the stretch. "In the middle of the season I was expecting to go to a state championship," Justice said. "I think if Patrick would have been healthy, we could have gone all the way. I’m not saying it’s Patrick’s fault, but when your point guard goes down, it changes a lot of things." The slam dunk contest is also on Justice’s agenda for tonight. He threw down several jams this year against Cumberland District opponents, but isn’t sure what he’ll break out for the contest. "I’m going to try to win it," Justice said. "But I’m not going to do anything crazy like jump over a table or anything."
  17. Just curious, how would the districts around here look in a 4, 5, & 6 A classification system in which schools played where their enrollments put them?

  20. What will be considered as "Southwest Virginia", I mean how far will the players come from? Out to Wytheville or on further (or closer)? Someone on the LPD board asked if there was going to be a girls game too?
  21. Hope the Bucs play well tomorrow.
  22. http://www.tricities.com/tristate/tri/sports.apx.-content-articles-TRI-2007-03-07-0004.html Bowles named Abingdon's new football coach Wednesday, Mar 07, 2007 - 12:00 AM Allen Gregory Sports Writer ABINGDON – John Bowles is the new head football coach at Abingdon High School. That long-awaited decision was made late Monday night at the Washington County School Board meeting. Bowles has head coaching experience at Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach and Science Hill High School in Johnson City. That coaching background was apparently the reason why Bowles was selected. Skip Bailey, who replaced Ray Gregory as AHS head football coach on an interim basis midway through this past season, was tabbed as interim athletic director Monday. Former athletic director Sam Blevins recently left to become assistant principal at Chilhowie High School. "I think they [school board members] wanted to go with a football coach who had experience," Bailey said. "Hopefully, we can put everything behind us now and move forward." Gregory, who was dismissed by school officials after complaints from parents of AHS players, now works as an offensive assistant at Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla. "I think everybody has been through enough," Bailey said. "It’s time to set aside all differences and get ready for football. "High school age kids are resilient. They are ready to play regardless of the situation. They have been in that weight room working out." The Falcons finished with a 5-5 record in 2006. According to Bailey, 22 seniors are expected to return from that team, including the prolific combo of quarterback Adam Henderson and Tyler Bailey. Gregory, a former NCAA Division 1-AA head coach, installed a wide-open offense at AHS last summer. Bailey, who was a basketball basketball in Middlesboro, Ky., is a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University. He served as assistant at Abingdon under coaches Bob Buchanan and Curtis Burkett from 1975-83. Efforts to reach Bowles, who no longer lives in Johnson City, were unsuccessful Tuesday. There are tentative plans for Bowles to meet with the AHS football players next week, said Bailey.

  24. http://www.tricities.com/tristate/tri/sports.apx.-content-articles-TRI-2007-03-04-0024.html BY LLOYD COMBS SPORTS CORRESPONDENT SALEM, Va. – Brandon Castle worked hard for years to get to the state finals. Unfortunately for the Virginia High senior, his final match lasted just 83 seconds. The only area wrestler to work his way into the finals, Castle placed second at 119 pounds in the Group AA state wrestling tournament Saturday night at Salem Civic Center. Castle was one of 10 area athletes to place at state, a list that includes Grundy freshmen Ethan Owens and Tazewell senior Eric McDaniel, who earned third-place medals. Christiansburg clinched its sixth straight AA team title early Saturday, and eight of the Blue Demons’ nine finalists won individual championships. The other area place-winners included Abingdon’s Devon Puriefoy (4th at 130 pounds), the Bearcats’ Chase Owens (6th at 189) and five Grundy wrestlers: Josh McCowan (4th at 152), Kaleb Smith (5th at 145), Jerami Bartley (6th at 160), Jon Dotson (6th at 125) and Josh Lee (8th at 189). Brandon Castle won 147 matches, district and regional titles and two state medals with an aggressive style. He got his 41st win of the season by pinning Staunton River’s Will Epperly in 1:42 in Saturday morning’s semifinals. Saturday night, Castle faced another wrestler who likes to attack, and Andrew Williams got the upper hand early. The Tabb sophomore won his second straight state championship by taking Castle to the mat midway through the opening period. Williams, who has been ranked nationally all year at 119, pinned Castle in a minute, 23 seconds. "My philosophy has always been to go wide open," Castle said. "I wanted to try to catch [Williams]. He just caught me first." After watching all the hard work building up to the state finals, it was difficult for Virginia High coach Ed Cressel to watch his talented senior go down so quickly at the end. "Brandon worked his whole life to get to this point," Cressel said. "I wanted to see him go hard for six minutes. It’s unfortunate that it ended that way. Everybody knows he’s a tough wrestler. But I’ve seen a lot of tough wrestlers and I’ve been around long enough to know that sometimes you just get caught." Tazewell senior Eric McDaniel bounced back from a semifinal loss to claim third at 171 pounds by pinning Lafayette’s Shawn Sweeny in 1:54 in the consolation finals. Owens wrestled back from a quarterfinal loss to take third place in the 119-pound weight class. "Ethan Owens did a good job," Grundy coach Travis Fiser said. "His first time down here and he loses one match to a defending state champ, and he wrestled him well." Owens lost a 12-7 decision Friday night to Andrew Williams. He won three straight matches Saturday, winning close decisions in his final two bouts. "I know most freshmen don’t get third, but I wanted to do better," Owens said. "I’ll use this as motivation to come back stronger next year." Grundy earned a fourth-place finish after finishing 15th last year. Christiansburg’s Cody Gardner, who will wrestle for former Grundy and Blue Demons coach Kevin Dresser next year at Virginia Tech, won his fourth state title.
