1. It was in pro formation, The Tempestuous One caught a pass on the first play of the game. Good Hands!
2. Caleb Jennings filled in for Ringstaff a little last year and returned kicks. I believe he is a junior.
3. Terry Monk was a heady player who rarely mad a mistake. Stevie Dye was a pure athlete and the definition of a "skill player." Both had tremendous supporting casts. I'll go with Stevie, he was my quarterback and a great leader. Timmy Brown was a good athlete but in my opinion didn't utilize his teamates enough. Stevie set passing records that will stand for a long time and was a threat to scramble.
4. Smitty - what's up - it's MUTA. Good to see another "old school blue" on here!
5. [ QUOTE ] Well i belive it's going to be the Beavers and the DOGS taking it all this year!!! grundy and the ricklands are down so it's Tazewell year to shine in the Southwest!!!! [/ QUOTE ] It's awful early to be talking that kind of smack! SWD Game of the Year--Richlands (Ricklands?) vs. Tasewall
6. [ QUOTE ] God i miss 2-a-days. id trade everything i have to go through that again, and to just play one quarter. [/ QUOTE ] Pay attention to that post if your still playing. When your ball coach says "You'll remember this year for the rest of your life" He ain't lyin' This is the best years of your life and you only get one chance!
7. Powell Valley comes to mind. But, it's not really trash talking. Back in the mid-ninetys they really tried to intimidate their oppenents at Bullitt Park. They have really energetic fans and a good football environment!
8. The Fullback was Jason Lester aka J-BO. He was as essential as the lineman and was also a senior that year. He ran many of those trap plays (he gutted Powell Valley at Bullit Park that year) J-Bo was just as big as us lineman. I am very proud that you could remember those trap plays. Because I am one of the two Offensive Guards (Mitchell) Most of the trapees never seen it coming. But it took all five to make it work.
9. Ask Jeremy McCommons that question! His junior year he had five seniors paving holes. LT-Jarrrod Dye LG-Riley Stoots C-Robbie Honaker RG-Brian "MUTA" Mitchell RT-Keenan Bowman. He went form roughly 1700 yards and 20 TD's (approximate) to around 400-500 yards the following year. Honaker, Mitchell, and Bowman were hard to top. But, The 92 OL had "BIG" Sam Barnett who could have played in D1 and Yancey Tabor who in my opinion had the finest technique of any lineman I've ever seen at RHS. Can't forget about Chris Crawford either or Adam Yost.
10. I read in this week's paper of the passing of Brad Howery. He played QB for Tazewell in 92 and 93. I played against him and he was a tough competitor. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
11. Luke got pinned in two first day matches at the '95 State tourney by Dan Baker (Salem) placed fifth and Nathan Cumbee (Blacksburg) DNP. The State Champ was from Culpeper. There have been some teriffic HWT's from Richlands, but I think Mitchell was the last to place in State.
12. It was either Mitchell, Elliot Joyce, or maybe Jeremy McCommons. But I think McCommons wrestled at 215.
13. Was the heavyweight from Richlands named Brian Mitchell graduated in '95. Placed sixth in state ahead of Owens. But never beat him.
14. Most are from Grundy I suppose, led by Luke Owens. The most recent HWT state champ from Grundy was pretty good too. His name escapes me.
15. [ QUOTE ] Next year state Chapions VHS,Number one safty and wide reciver number 20, Most yards 33, Best QB 21 best linebacker 77, Best lineman 79 WE ARE THE BEARCATS [/ QUOTE ] VHS can't even win the City of Bristol Championship!
16. 333, Salem Fans have made enough excuses for 1992 to gag every football fan in Southwest Virginia. But, that is twelve years old. I hope you've given thought to excuses for 2004. Because you will need some new ones after the Spartans are thrashed by the Blues. Heads up! Cleats and the wet field issue cannot be used again. Maybe if you petition the right people, someone will come up with a receipt that links Richlands with the BALCO investigation. There is a flame that was lit twelve years ago, and on Saturday the Salem Spartans will be engulfed by it. G.A.T.A
17. I was a member of the '92 Blues. And I am sick and tired of seeing our team, school, town, and Dennis Vaught under attack. The reason we defeated Salem and Orange had nothing to do with equipment. We had more heart, excellent talent and SUPERIOR COACHING! The mistake was admitted, not that it had any effect on the outcome. The '92 team should not be remembered for "cleatgate" (I hate that term), But, instead be remembered as the best damn team in the state that year! As for Dennis Vaught, I know Dennis Vaught, he is a caring and compassionate man. The lessons I learned from him have helped me throughout my life! It pains me to see him still being targeted and slandered.
18. A few lines in respose to your post proudbengal. You mentioned the weather favored "a team like Richlands." Bassett's offense revolves around a power running game. Richlands offense shows I formation and a great deal of the spread offense. Wet conditions favor a power running game. You say Bassett had not played on that type of field all year. Our field is 100 yards long and is grass. What kind of field does Bassett play on? Your 2 defenders slipped and Ringstaff did not? Sounds like superior agility and not a wet field. Remember, your mighty and highly touted speed on offense netted ZERO points. Bassett's only points came from a Richlands mistake on offense. That interception and a dropped pass by Tatum were the only reasons the final score wasn't 14-0. Richlands is the better team. That is not a strong statement, it is a true one. You say you want a little respect, but, no one to my knowledge from Richlands or any SWVA team has disrespected Bassett's players, fans, school, town, or field. The only disrespect I saw was from one of your fans accusing Richlands of less than honest tactics. You must give respect to receive it!
19. [ QUOTE ] Much was said this past week about how good a team Richlands is. Not many people gave Bassett any credit. I give Richlands credit for the defense played, but I think the game might have had a different outcome had the field not "obviously" been watered down before the game to control Bassett's speed and footing. The precipitation was not enough to make the mess of the field that it surely was and no one on the other side was fooled as to how the field got that way. Sure, you can do whatever you want to your own field (its legal), but I know that here in Bassett, we would never do that to our opponent. Bassett is a class act team and we're proud of them for their incredible effort this year. [/ QUOTE ] It takes a compete idiot and sore loser to even mention crap like the field. Richlands has been the target of this type of "mud slinging", pardon the pun, before. I have never seen anyone water down a field before a football game. And to make such accusations looks like sour grapes. You fail to give credit to Richlands for having a great deal of speed their selves. The field was in good shape for anywhere at this time of the year. Bassett was a worthy opponent, but, Richlands was the victor. Both teams played on the same field. Period. I am tired of hearing SWVA teams like Richlands and Grundy being attacked because of field conditions. These accusations stem not from field conditions. It stems from teams traveling down to rural counties and having their breakfast, lunch and dinner handed to them. Football is an outdoor sport. I suggest one of two things. Either keep your team at the house or become more gracious losers. If you don't like smash-mouth football the way it was meant to be played. Maybe there's room for you in Region III, with the other "mud-slingers."
20. Salem would whine if the game was played in a dome. They will find something to complain about. I hope they complain about their sore hineys after the Blues spank 'em. Maybe they should play the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl At Richlands or Grundy!
21. [ QUOTE ] ah this is just more low class crap from Va high...they use these guys for cheerleading competitions because they are strong and athletic...they don't stand on the sidelines with pom pom's on Friday night or anything like that...and if you called any of them a sissy to their face they would probably kick your teeth out...they are just helping out their schools by providing some muscle power...don't give them crap over it. [/ QUOTE ] For once Lance, we are in total agreement. You can't criticize these young athletes for displaying school spirit! I think it's pretty lame to even mention this in a negative light.
22. [ QUOTE ] Hell we all know Tazewell gonna rock their world. To bad them G-Girls and The Grundy "trash" Wave couldn't play like everyone wanted them to. I'll say this.VA High SUCKS! P.S. GRAHAM AND GRUNDY WILL GET DOMINATED NEXT YEAR TOO! [/ QUOTE ] I wouldn't exactly be calling Grundy "trash". After all they did tame the pups this year. And about VA High, my friend, if Tazewell isn't careful they will make the same mistake as Grundy (underestimating VA High). FOOD FOR THOUGHT: If VA High sux, what will you say if the beat the DAWGS?
23. [ QUOTE ] score should have been at least 12-0 at the end of regulation...you guys can say whatever else you want...thats the fact...two bad calls, two td's lost. anyone who saw the game knows who really won, you guys played well on defense...thats about all the credit I'll give you...Grundy had a shot at state this year until those two bad calls, you guys have about 0% chance...enjoy your great victory as long as it lasts, but no one who saw that game will ever respect you for it. you guys can talk all the trash you want to talk, Grundy was the better team and you guys are a total joke...I doubt you will beat Tazewell...but then again, if the refs throw a flag every time Tazewell scores, maybe you will? [/ QUOTE ] Sounds like sour grapes. Forget the field or the refs. Grundy got beat because they were looking past VA High. Grundy was overconfident and VA High was hungery. I said before it is very hard to beat a team twice in one season and even more so in consecutive games. I remember the so-called "miracle minute" at Grundy a few years ago. I guess the old proverb about living by the sword and dying by the sword rings true. Grundy had a good year and should be congratulated. VA High earned some respect and should also be congratulated.
24. [ QUOTE ] I've got to say this. RICHLANDS FANS ARE BEAVER FANS WHO DON'T SPELL VERY WELL! Thank you. [/ QUOTE ] I must say sandman, you show a great deal of C-L-A-S-S. With the emphasis being on the LAST three letters
