  1. Guys, I have a question. Haven't been around much lately, but I see a couple new names listed in the Beaver threads, kids I don't even see on the originally released roster. Can you guys clue me in to who these kids are? Many thanks. Who is: Shaun Brooks Devin Clements Here is the roster I have for Bluefield, posted on 8/20/05: 2 QB Jerome Powell 11 5' 11" 174 3 HB Jonathan Payne 11 5' 6" 163 4 WR Jermy Keczan 12 5' 9" 153 8 KICKER/PUNTER Justin Mason 10 5' 6" 145 9 QB Steven McClanahan 9 6' 0" 139 10 QB Eric McClanahan 10 6' 0" 155 11 KICKER/PUNTER Sean Cornelius 10 5' 5" 135 12 KICKER/PUNTER Richard Sexton 9 5' 9" 135 14 WR Caleb Yearout 11 6' 0" 163 15 QB Jacob Thornton 10 5' 10" 150 18 HB Deak Kersey 10 5' 8" 150 19 WR Ansel Ponder 10 6' 1" 154 20 HB Aaron Bowes 10 5' 6" 144 21 WR Vincent Madison 11 5' 11" 148 22 FB Allen Carter 11 6' 2" 263 23 WR Michael Fitzko 12 5' 6' 165 28 HB Maurice Jordan 11 5' 11" 168 30 HB Chase Joyner 10 5' 8" 137 31 WR Mark Page 12 5' 11" 175 32 WR Isiah Manns 9 6' 0" 187 33 FB Marcel Myers 10 5' 7" 158 34 HB Darious Hunt 9 5' 8" 136 35 HB Brent Owens 9 5' 6' 120 37 FB Allen Walker 11 5' 6" 160 40 FB Joshua Manns 11 5' 8" 173 42 FB Travis Steptoe 12 5' 10" 225 43 TE Michael Rose 12 5' 10" 172 44 TE Cody Wassum 9 5' 9" 149 45 TE Tommy Ly 9 5' 2" 118 50 G Brandon Harris 10 5' 6' 205 52 T Julian Morton 11 6' 1" 259 53 T Christopher Harris 10 6' 0" 235 54 G Ryan Albert 12 5' 11" 205 57 T Andrew Hudgins 12 5' 5' 245 58 G Joey Stone 10 5' 10" 157 60 G Ian Godfrey 10 6' 0" 175 61 G Tanner Lockwood 9 5' 8" 197 62 T Nick Williams 9 5' 11' 165 63 C Allen Collins 12 6' 1' 199 64 T Terrance Williams 12 5' 10" 185 65 G Jeff Hutchinson 12 6' 0" 225 66 G Cory Copolo 10 5' 6' 170 67 G Zachary Thornhill 11 6' 2' 210 68 G Johnathan Belcher 11 5' 9" 170 70 T Marvin Dowell 10 5' 10" 244 71 C Mathew Maddow 9 6' 0" 205 72 B Matthew Lawless 9 5' 6' 158 73 T Andrew Semonco 11 6' 1' 198 74 T Justin Shrader 10 5' 10" 245 75 C William Crockett 11 5' 8" 218 76 C Justin Williams 10 5' 8" 258 78 T Michael Miller 10 6' 3' 263 79 T Casey Bolden 11 6' 2" 239 80 TE Johnathan Wolford 12 5' 6' 164 82 TE Matthew Carter 11 6' 1' 202 84 TE Cecil Smith 12 6' 1' 185 88 TE Jeremy Hurt 11 6' 2' 195
  2. [ QUOTE ] Doesn't shock me at all. Mount View year in and year out has the best talent in the state of West Virginia. If they had any coaching at all they would never lose AA. Someone who watched them play Bluefield described them to me as this. As much talent as Graham 01 with better QB play. That is pretty talented, which tells me they need a new coach, but who wants that job? If Fred Simon had that job he would be putting State title rings on his toes by now. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not in the area any more, but it sounds like the kids are plenty talented, but that the coach has a hard time reigning them in, like the kids who commented to the reporters about how good they were. Some of it was before my time, but the old Bluefield teams under Gainer and Chmara...they didn't always have the best talent, but they played well as a team, were willing to be coached, and that made for a heck of a combination. I mean, stuff like every player would look the same in the uniform....very much like military discipline. Not sure how well that would work today with the kids of 2005, but they've got plenty of talent down there, if they could harness it.
  3. [ QUOTE ] Wow man, you really laid it on me, I'm speechless. I'll take a quote from the Hokie fans that I work with when you ask them who owns the series record betwwen WVU and vt. "Why do you live in the past, this is now!" According to them football wasn't invented until 1995 in B-burg. Have a good day. [/ QUOTE ] I'm going to pass on the VT-WVU bait. Too easy. Harkening back to old times....not relevant. But if the wins in 1907 (sarcasm) help make it OK, well, far be it from me to say otherwise.
  4. [ QUOTE ] all that matters is where his feet where... and i'm sure you could see his feet better where you were then the ref could... like i said, we can all watch it on the news and then speculate. it was questionable to me if he got his feet in or not, but the ref was right there and called it. but we have evidence and everyone will see tonight. please say no more about that play and just watch the news. [/ QUOTE ] Know what bugs me here? The guy's team won, and he's complaining on how much we should have scored. Guy needs to enjoy his win, and stop complaining about whether BHS should have had 7 or 14
  5. [ QUOTE ] Maybe not, but you guys sure as hell can't lose with class. [/ QUOTE ] I'm sorry slappy, but how do you determine that? I see several people say they have to hand it to JM on winning. On what do you base your comment about not losing with class?
  6. [ QUOTE ] you should be glad you scored 14, the refs gave you one in the 1st half. [/ QUOTE ] C'mon...show a little class. Enjoy your (rare) win against Bluefield and go on your way.
  7. [ QUOTE ] Is this the most yardage beaver has given up to one RB? [/ QUOTE ] That's a good question. Two other backs I can think of that piled up some yards are the Cooper kid from Weir, and Quincy Wilson when he was at Weir.
  8. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] i for one dont begrudge any school anything but if you start to spend money on one school for a multipurpose building then you have to look at the other schools in the county and say what about them. i for one know that grahams gym and locker and shower areas and weight room are barely big enough to turn around in.granted graham does not play at the highschool but the area is not no where as good. and my question is will all students at richlands get the benifit of this or will it just be for sports. if all get benifit then you will have to look at what about tazewell graham and pocahontas do they not deserve the same as richlands. then where does the money come from. i am not saying that i dont support you guys but you have to think outside richlands also. the money for this would come from all residents in the county and the other kids throughout the county would not benifit from this. [/ QUOTE ] Just like the taxpayers(outside of bluefield) support Graham playing at Mitchell Stadium????? Give me a break. [/ QUOTE ] I don't have a dog in this hunt. I live in Georgia, haven't been a resident of the area since 1986 when I went off for college. So let me offer my opinion on a couple of things... Seems some of the Tazewell County folks are peeved that the TCSB pays rent to the City of Bluefield for the use of Mitchell Stadium. That $30,000/year seems to have ruffled some feathers. Let's think about something...how much do you think a stadium for Graham High Schook would cost? I've seen munbers for some really nice stadiums in Texas, where they spend $3 million plus. Let's just say, you build a bargain stadium for $1 million. Okay, I am guessing the voters of the county would have to pass a bond issue to fund a $1 million stadium. Here are some rough calcs on this: $1 million 20 year repayment schedule 4% interest yearly repayment = $72,000 approximately So, just THAT part will cost $42,000 more per year. Who will pay the light bill? Who will maintain the stadium? These things cost money, and with the rental of Mitchell, Tazewell County just pays the rent and walks away at the end of a game. The City of Bluefield pays all this. Build your own stadium, and you have to pay for it. My guess, when all is said and done, the annual cost for a $1 million stadium will be $85,000 per year for 20 years. If $30,000/year pisses off Tazewell County residents, are they prepared to pony up an additional $55,000/year to be free of paying Bluefield for the stadium? And like I said, a $1 million stadium isn't going to be "all that". Field Turf would run you another $500,000-$750,000. A nice field house, probably another $500,000. Hey, if Tazewell County wants to build Graham a stadium, I've got no problem with it...they had just better be aware of what they're getting into before they burn their bridges.
  9. [ QUOTE ] who does bluefield play next [/ QUOTE ] Bluefield travels to Herbert Hoover next. They're #4 in AA.
  10. [ QUOTE ] i thought he played....oh well [/ QUOTE ] No, NOT "oh well" You said: "i promise you he played...... " If you don't know for sure, don't PROMISE you know something. Better to remain silent, and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth, and remove all doubt.
  11. [ QUOTE ] ok whatever i was there and i saw him play....you can ask anyone...hes still hurt but he played.... [/ QUOTE ] Are you saying that you saw #3 play? Makes sense, that's Jon Payne. He plays at HB. Did he take snaps? Maybe...who knows? But #3 is NOT Powell, dude. Or, are you trying to tell us that #2 played?
  12. [ QUOTE ] i promise you he played...... [/ QUOTE ] Groan...You realize that there is a #3 for Bluefield already, right? Jon Payne is #3 and he's a HB. Maybe he took a direct snap, who knows, but do you get it that it is NOT Powell? From the Bluefield roster: 2 QB Jerome Powell 11 5' 11" 174 3 HB Jonathan Payne 11 5' 6" 163 Now, do you want to try this again, and admit that you're confused?
  13. [ QUOTE ] he changed his number to 3 and i saw him playin qb [/ QUOTE ] Are you just trying to get a rise out of people, or didn't you understand that he's OUT due to his knee? Pretend to have some logic...why would he change his number if he even was able to play? Honestly, until I hear results from someone else, you don't have any credibility.
  14. [ QUOTE ] As I suggested weeks ago, I'm skeptical about sports and recovering from inuries, athletes and coaches are competitors and they have the desire to be in the game, so it's easy to underestimate them or not respect them enough. G man's likely correct about this re injury. I would certainly agree with not playing again this season for the big scheme of recovery even it it;s a matter or bluefield in the playoffs or not, so be it. Athlete's health 1st. Time will tell in this situation. [/ QUOTE ] I don't know if your memory is any better than mine, but I keep thinking of Anthony (??) Benson. I think I remember right that he tore up his knee on the kick return in the first game, for Fairview Junior High. I don't think he ever played again, did he?
  15. [ QUOTE ] VT offensive coordinator Brian Stinespring never played college football. Of course, that fact is pretty obvious sometimes. [/ QUOTE ] Stiney went to JMU. For some reason, I thought he played ball there. Actually, he did.. Stiney's Bio " native of Clifton Forge, Va., Stinespring was a walk-on player for James Madison University in the early 1980s."
  16. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I just wanted to create this thread to let Fred know how sorely missed he is across Beaver Nation. It simply isn't the same without you calling the game. You actually cared about Bluefield football and it showed on each play you called. It's a crime that they pushed you out the door so that Bob Redd and his buddy Woody Morgan could butcher....er I mean call the games. [/ QUOTE ] I agree hole-heartedly! I liked Persinger almost as much as I did Jim Nelson from back in the day. [/ QUOTE ] Speaking of Jim Nelson, what is the deal with him? He called Bluefield games for SOOO long, apparently got mad, and took his ball to Graham. Now, he's at Princeton. Honestly, there is nobody out there who can call a game like Jim Nelson, at least at the high school level. I honestly could see what was happening...he was descriptive about the formation, the time, the score, the down and distance...it was almost as good as being there. But...what caused the guy to leave Bluefield, then Graham? I've got to say...we've been very fortunate. I've listened to HS football telecasts elsewhere, and it is rare to find someone who is halfway decent at it.
  17. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Hard to tell with the two announcers BHS has this season... [/ QUOTE ] I heard one of them was Woody Morgan, of WVVA "fame". I don't think I ever heard him make it through a sportscast without getting lost or confused at least twice. And when he did, he'd stumble and fill with "Gotta love it" [/ QUOTE ] "Check that..." Is what I always remembered him saying when he messed up on air. lol [/ QUOTE ] True, true...he did say that a lot too. I don't know what Woody's calling is, but it sure doesn't seem to be television.
  18. Anyone else notice that all of the Bluefield players seem to be wearing the "new style" helmets, with the unusual facemasks, and it appears that none of the Princeton players are? I've noticed that Bluefield has been using them the last 2-3 years. I hear that they're safer, but that's purely anecdotal for me.
  19. [ QUOTE ] Yeah, I live in C'burg now. [/ QUOTE ] LOL..just nosy me trying to figure out who is who. I lived in C-Burg from December 2000 until March 2003.
  20. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Hard to tell with the two announcers BHS has this season... [/ QUOTE ] Isn't that the truth. I could pick up the game on the radio as we left Beamer's tonight, but the closer we got to home the more the signal faded. However, I did notice that Woody Morgan wasn't doing the play-by-play tonight. I thought he was "The Voice of the Bluefield Beavers." I don't care who they get, they won't replace Fred Persinger and forcing him out was the stupidest move ever. [/ QUOTE ] As I'm not local any more...I don't know Persinger. But, the real one who left, who was truly the best doing play-by-play was Jim Nelson. I never got a clear reason why he left...other than he had a personality conflict with Freddie. He went to Graham, did wonders for them, but left to go to Princeton. Truly a great voice, but difficult to work with? Hey B_R, you're in C-Burg?
  21. [ QUOTE ] Hard to tell with the two announcers BHS has this season... [/ QUOTE ] I heard one of them was Woody Morgan, of WVVA "fame". I don't think I ever heard him make it through a sportscast without getting lost or confused at least twice. And when he did, he'd stumble and fill with "Gotta love it"
  22. Powell got hurt playing on defense, didn't he? Just my opinion, unless there is a competent backup ready to come in at QB (no disrespect meant to the current backups), it might be wise to rest the QB and not play him on defense. I heard that Carter was a good choice at FB, that he got the ball a fair bit, and ran well.
  23. [ QUOTE ] Just a question, how are you supposed to give the scores if your at the game???? [/ QUOTE ] 1. Someone at the game with a cell phone could call someone who is logged in here and give updates. 2. Someone who is listening to a game on the radio can give updates on that game or other game scores.
