  1. Tell me one team who ever won a title by speculation and I’ll give credence to your argument. Until then, I’ll just attribute your raw ass to jealousy. Apparently, you know little about historical VHSL teams, or you would know that outside of losses to PV, Central of Lunenburg only lost a handful of games over a decade. When it comes to PV, classification didn’t mean diddley...anyone who wanted some could’ve got some because Phil didn’t duck anyone.
  2. That Lee team lost in the Division 4 finals by 1 or 2 points to Tabb.
  3. Who would’ve beaten who etc. is pure speculation. The results we do know were settled on the field in each classification. One thing I do know is that the ‘89 PV team beat Richlands and Honaker by a combined score of 100-13 in the first 2 games of the season, leading to both teams dropping the Vikings from the schedule. Phil Robbins looked high and low to find 2 teams to replace them, and had to settle on travelling to Haysi and Grundy to open the 1990 season which left PV with only 4 home games in 1990. If Graham had wanted a game that year, all they had to do was say “yes”, because I know for a fact they were asked to fill one of those holes. As far as the ‘89 Vikings go, they didn’t give up many points either, and around half of the points they did give up was in trash time with the starters on the bench. So, speculate away.
  4. Where do you come up with this garbage? FYI, GC beat PV EXACTLY 1 time in a year PV won a title...and that win was gained on a failed 2 point conversion trt by PV in OT. On the try the receiver was wide open but couldn’t come up with a slightly underthrown ball. That’s how close GC was to an O-fer. Games are settled on the field, and usually, when PV was good, GC would come up short. You would think that sting would’ve worn off for you guys by now. Numbers don’t lie.
  5. Actually, the feeder programs were already at a high level when Phil arrived...he actually names that as one of the reasons he took the job. But, you’re right...anyone who implies that Phil was only successful because of Coach Jones clearly lives in a dream world. Both were great coaches. Barry was a great motivator, Phil was great with game planning and preparation. Together, they are arguably the greatest tandem to coach on the same staff in SWVA (without argument the most decorated)...but separately, both were still excellent coaches. Contrary to claims in this thread, I never once in my years as a player heard Phil trash any of his players to other players. That claim sounds more to me like hurt feelings and sour grapes on behalf of the guy that posted it. I did however hear him on several occasions call out players who exhibited a lack of leadership or those whose actions provided a bad example for the younger players...as he should have. As far as the comment in the article goes, from a competitive standpont, that is the truth. We always wanted to beat Appy, but more times than not, that wasn’t a game we had any doubts about winning. In the eyes of Appy, PV was their biggest challenge and rival...but that wasn’t always the case in the eyes of the players at PV. It held true more amongst the older fans than it did with the younger folks who hadn’t seen Appy be consistantly competitive with PV over a span of several years. Maybe it’s not gracious to say that to the press, but that doesn’t make it any less true.
  6. Figured you guys would enjoy this. http://www.heraldcourier.com/sports/an-oral-history-appalachia-vs-powell-valley/article_816729a6-c5d4-11e7-9ab1-370a08e037ca.html
  7. 4-26 actually...but, at all the county schools, lots of good football coaches have been run off in the past 10-15 years. It’s not just at GC, it’s county wide.
  8. I’m not sayin’ it can’t...what I am saying is that Union has a history of coming out fairly flat in their opening round playoff games in the past...games that come to mind are Stuarts Draft in 2011, Lee in 2013, and Tazewell in 2014. With Richlands being the first round game, that won’t be the case. I’ve never seen Union not get up for them. Should be a good one.
  9. I don’t look at it that way...that’s one team Union always gets fired up for. So, they won’t come out flat in the first round...it’ll be guns a blazin’.
  10. Yep, the winner of this one will be the winningest team in Scott County this year.
  11. Most teams have crammed as many in the box as they could...that seems to be the consensus on how to stop Union's O...and I'd say the idea is on point. Easier said than done, though.
  12. I’ve seen both in one form or another, and I think JIB has too many athletes. Just my opinion.
  13. Winning the Region and making the playoffs are 2 different things entirely.
  14. There are still 16...they are just halved between 2 regions.
  15. Even with a Lee loss, it looks to me like there is a really good chance they would wind up with 197. Seems like Richlands best hope is a win and Grayson loss.
  16. That's not the case here. Folks will get there when the gates open and lay down 100 square feet of blankets "just in case" friends show up to sit with them. Many end up with just empty blankets where folks could be sitting.
  17. I know a few folks that throw 'em down "just in case". If it is close to game time and there isn't anyone sitting there, I usually just scoot 'em over and sit down. Got some nasty looks at the MW game, but I really just don't care. haha
