Hey guy's, it has been a true pleasure in reading all of your post about SW basketball athletes,
And some history of them, and ETSU basketball. Thanks for sharing your memories. It takes me back
A while!
P.S best of luck to all SW VA teams still playing!
-
You were a very fortunate person have seen all those games at and away from State. I graduated
In '72 and only seen a few games, but have followed them every year. Forbes will be hard for State
To keep, espically if he has another good year. He has recruited well it appears, and got some
Good quality citizens on the squad.I wish them the best in the SoCon tournament, and I hope they
Make it to the NCAA tournament.Best wishes, my friend
-
One in stripes, you are probably right about Jennings at State. My memory is not so good these
Days. Thanks for the correction.
-
Ryan, the Ole saying is that Defense wins ball games, and RHS obviously
Did just that, and won. Good game plan. On the other hand the school that
that played GC did not play much defense, and still won. Go figure.Best of
Luck to Richlands and Gate City Saturday. Stay healthy guys and play with
A great deal of Pride.
On a different note, the McClung athlete from GC; How would you rate him next
To Calvin Talford, and Trazell Silvers. That goes a little ways back, and the
Game has changed somewhat since their day, but both were very good players.
I watch Talford put 76 on Chilhowie one night at Castlewood, with about 12
Throw downs and cartwheel dunks. He was no fluke at the D1 level. He played
Above the rim!
ETSU was a 14 seed that year, Arizona was a 3 seed. ETSU had Talford, Mr
Jennings, Story and Rodney English, and a solid bench. Coach Olson from
Arizona team just could Not do much against State's quickness and athletes.
It was 87 to 80 ETSU. I think that was 1992.
I got to know States recruiter back then, and State signed Greg
Belcher from Chilhowie as a shooting guard. State's coaching
Changes took it's toll on Belcher in just two years.
-
Somebody help me out! First congratulations to Richlands High school on their win. Great for
SWVA basketball, and RHS.
2nd, Someone mentioned that Gate City is still alive, even after their loss? Is that correct?
This McClung kid must be something special......just a JR, and how tall? WOW !!!!!!!
-
Big Winners has a good point, but have you ever been to Wytheville, Va?
-
City of Raven, been there many times back in seventies, when I worked for the County
Of Tazewell.
I got my first taste of turtle soup in Raven. I walked up to a family's yard one day, and
Looked down at a 50 lb turtle. The folks said, come on in, we got another one cook'n right
Now.
We'll, I was not going to turn that down. Not bad soup. There was always time to break bread
With your friends and have good conversation.
I know you are proud of your community. A lot of good folks in Raven, Red Ash, and on
Bearwaller Mt., just to name a few places I used to visit.
Working in those days, and talking to the many friends I made, helped define me as the person
I am today. I would not trade those good Ole days for anything. I was Blessed to have the
Opportunity to just sit down and listen to my friends.
I want to think that that experience helped mold me with the character and person that I am
Today.

The Mayor of the trailer park, that's a good one, and lives in your mother's basement.....Great!
That is hard for me to top, My Friend. And the picture of his mother, sister or sweet heart,
that is even Harder for anyone to top. Would not even try to go there.
But you know, that young lady is someone's daughter, and was a young child at one time, that
God still loves, just as much as he loves you, and me.
It is not how we look on the outside, but it is our heart that defines each one of us.
-
Hey guys, it is hard sometimes for us Ole Vietnam guys to understand the guys of the
Milliluim age. I don't think it is the napalm that is clouding my thinking, but people
Just don't think the same now as back in the sixties. Tatos were not a fashion statement
Then, like they are now, but a symbol of peace and love of country. Later, dudes
-
Hey guys, there comes a time in your life when ones emotions overcome good common sense. I think
That is what happened to me today in my rant over this Basketball issue at Richlands.
I was wrong. I apologize. Please forgive me for my mistake in my bad judgement in this matter.
I went back and read the post, all of them, and yes, I made a mistake in my posting things that
Just was not right, and I ask for everyone's forgiveness, especially the young man in the matter.
Thanks everyone for your support. God Bless.
-
OK guys, this has turned into a game of placing blame on this or that, and people telling me
That high school kids are 17 or 18 years old. Really? As if I did not know that! Give me a break,
Please.
These are 2 young boys, that played football, and maybe they are feeling some burn out, but probably
There are others too on the team that had the same feelings. We ALL don't know exactly if that
Is the case or not.
I think my opinion is just what it is; My opinion, and maybe not yours, that is all, and if you
READ things into my opinion, well that is your right to do so, but it is for your satisfaction,
Not mine.
I wish everyone the best this year at RHS, and all the BB players, and former players!
-
I don't need to be called an adult, but you are the one that is acting childish, son!
Get your Big Boy pants on, and quit covering for them. At least the Blues have several other
Men they can depend on this year. Their Senior year only comes around once, and I just hope these
2 young men are making the right decision, for themselves and for Richlands High School.
May God Bless both of them in the day ahead!
-
Don't make excuses for either of them. They made their bed, so let them lie in it.
Injuries? BS.
Richlands Is a SMALL school that needs every man in school that can play the game. It
May take several weeks for these 2 dudes to get over the football injuries, but they will,
And probably could help out the basketball team, IF they wanted too do so.
So, they choose not to play, or quit the Basketball Program. Shxx happens!
-
This is a sad situation for Blue's Basketball. If these 2 players were members of the BB team
Say since 9th grade, and played football also in those grades, well they just gave the Blues
The shaft, to put it mildly.
No indication of of this coming , I presume? Boy what a Crock of sh××! Character? So what they
Lost the last game of football, Big Deal! The other football players could handle it, but these
2 guys could not..... I would not want to be in a fox hole with either of them! Would they have
My back......Who knows???
-
So, would it be safe to say they are no longer a part of the Richlands Basketball
Program?
-
Chilhowie is currently 3-0, and playing well. They just may surprise a lot of folks this
Year. Very talented and very athletic. I think they have a good schedule with GW, Fort,
Marion, Galax, and Eastside.
-
There is some different listing service front the VHSL as related to Galax's enrollment
Numbers. Different parts of " official " numbers are different.
I would think based on past figures for this city school, the ADM would be closer to 273,
And not 400 students. Their are not many 400+ schools in A1. They are George Wythe, Chilhowie,
Eastside, Patrick Henry, Auburn, and Grundy(next year). Ft Chiswell and Radford are moving to A2
Next year. Both are over the 475 cap for A1.
300+ schools are Honaker, Rural Retreat,Parry McCluer, and Holston.
The remaining schools are 200+ and below according to VHSL figures. Galax would be in this group
Along with about 10 other schools. It is very confusing as to exactly what the enrollment is for
Galax. My opinion it would be about 275 for this year.
-
Very good assessment of the game you put a lot of thought into this, and very well
Written. GW by 1 or 1 td.
-
I am still going with GW. This will be a real head knocker folks. Both are very good teams.
PM proved that with win at Hurley. GW and Galax are the class of A1 teams in SWVA. GW has so many
Good athletes, it would be very hard to single one out and say if we stop this guy, well we can
Beat them. GW has played a pretty good schedule, and PM has played a somewhat weaker schedule,
But that did show against Hurley.
It may come down to possessions, field position, turnovers. GW will need to slow down RB Nelson
From PM. This will be by far the best team PM has faced this year. GW should use all their offensive
Weapons and see if PM can stop them. These 2 teams are very good, and it is really hard to try
And do an analysis of either team against each other.I am struggling just to make a good cause
For either team. Oh well, GW by 1 or 2 points.
