  1. By all means, throw shade!!! No excuse for them to have not rectified that situation by now. Administration needs to be called out until they do.
  2. Doing a little light reading on Thanksgiving. Dennis Vaught had an interesting career. Won a state championship at Lexington in 1989. Resigned in 1990 from PH-Roanoke for racial slurs during a halftime speech. Suspended for multiple seasons in 1992 for using illegal cleats in a state semifinal. I didn’t realize until reading this, Vaught tried to use the same cleats in the state final but got caught during pre-game. Fired in 1996 for intentionally injuring multiple players from Grundy. Billy Haun from the top rope “Richlands is not a place to raise a family…” Im not offering an opinion one way or another. Just a very interesting read. https://wegottodosomething.com/2018/08/16/wild-wild-southwest/
  3. I'd love to see where Fort Chiswell would be right now had Tiller stayed. Maybe the frontrunner for a state championship.
  4. As a matter of record, I agree wholeheartedly with this ^^^! I just think the road for Riverheads to get there is much, much tougher in 2B. Edit to add: I personally believe the gap between Class 1 and Class 2 has grown over the past few years. Riverheads, Essex and Galax could have been competitive in Class 2 between 2015 and 2019. I'm not suggesting any would have won the Class 2 state championship but all three would have been a handful for any Class 2 team during that period with the exception of maybe the 2016 Appomattox team. Nobody in Class 1 or Class 2 was on their level. Galax and Essex wouldn't be very competitive in Class 2 now. I don't think anyone in Class 1 would be.
  5. Over the course of the past 8 seasons, when has Riverheads had a 2nd round game inside 2 scores like the one they just played against Clarke County? 2015 - 41-0 over Altavista 2016 - 38-0 over Essex 2017 - 49-0 over Altavista 2018 - 65-7 over Altavista 2019 - 45-0 over Rappahannack County 2020 - 58-13 over Altavista 2021 - Forfeit 2022 - 47-20 over Sussex Central My point is, Clarke County would beat the brakes off anyone in 1B right now. As would any other 2B playoff team.
  6. I agree completely with "compete on a state level." What I vehemently disagree with is Region 1B is considerably weaker once you get below those top teams. In recent years, I would go so far as to say, Riverheads is the only 1B school since Altavista that could compete on a state level. No opening round game plus what amounts to two controlled scrimmages against inferior competition doesn't put much of a burden on the health of the players like playing playoff football in 2B will.
  7. If you are referring to my statement quoted above, the word "slightly" is italicized to stress sarcasm. Maybe that wasn't obvious enough. Region 2B is considerably stronger than Region 1B. The path for Riverheads to reach Salem is measurably more difficult in 2B.
  8. Outside of Altavista and Riverheads over the past decade, Region 1B has been the weakest region in Virginia. Riverheads hasn't played an opening round playoff game in several years. Region 2B is slightly stronger than its Class 1 counterpart. The road to Salem will be a lot tougher than it has been in previous years for Riverheads. They are definitely capable of reaching that goal but it will take a considerably higher toll on them physically to reach it.
  9. Facebook has been interesting all weekend because that's the mature, adult thing to do in 2023. Continue the fight on social media. Attend a high school sporting event played by kids and the adults are the ones that need babysitting. I went to high school with two (a married couple) right at the heart of the incident. Graduated with one of them. It doesn't surprise me at all those two would be involved. If there is childish drama to be had in Grayson County, you can bet your ass those two are involved somehow. Sad state of affairs when 50 year olds are fighting at high school football games. Especially when one of those is an elementary school teacher in the Carroll County school system. She should know better and set a better example. But she's never been able to do that. The manager of Food City was in the parking lot giving the Independence Police Chief the business when we left. I would bet, tailgating in Food City parking lot will not be permitted in 2024.
  10. I give up trying to predict Region 1C this season. As soon as it looks like things are beginning to make sense, someone lays an egg. George Wythe gave Galax 20 points in the opening moments of the regular season meeting. After that, it was a pretty even matchup. I don’t see GW making those same mistakes and digging such a deep hole again. But will that be enough to get past Galax? I’m still not convinced anyone in 1C is very good but someone has to win it.
  11. I can confirm. Monty Chipman resigned as coach on Friday. In his time at Carroll, he managed a 10-26 record. He will remain in the school system as a teacher. Carroll is a tough sell. The students are spread so far across the county with some challenging terrain to navigate to get to Hillsville. Traditionally, the majority of athletes at Carroll come from within a 10 mile radius of Hillsville. A lot of the kids below Fancy Gap in Cana go to Mount Airy. Kids in Austinville go to Fort Chiswell. Many beyond Sylvatus and Dugspur go to Floyd. Carroll is a mess transportation wise the further away from I-77 you get.
  12. Just got home from the golf course. Flipped on NFHS to see how the Union-Tazewell game was going. I thought this game was supposed to be a blowout? 🤔
  13. Well, I should preface that by stating, the game being Saturday was what the Wytheville newspaper reported. I haven’t seen anything from either school.
  14. Galax will travel to George Wythe next Saturday. Had assumed they would play Friday night.
  15. There was a large crowd between the end zone and Food City prior to the game tailgating and they were DRUNK. As the stands started clearing out after the game, they were trying to fight people leaving the game. Not sure of anything else. We were trying to ge the band kids out safely.
  16. Galax with an interception. I think that’s 5 turnovers now for GC. 3:23 remaining.
  17. Grayson has looked timid all night. A lot of nervy mistakes. Galax has been MUCH more physical than they were 2 weeks ago.
  18. Anybody have an update from Wytheville?
  19. Jones to Ashworth for a 35 yard TD. Galax 14 Grayson 0 6:03 remaining.
  20. Halftime in Independence with Galax leading 7-0. Grayson looks out of sync and an unprepared.
  21. Grayson looks extremely nervous. Already thrown an interception and the QB and punter both fumbled. Add 3 false start penalties to the mix.
  22. You make some valid points but I am unwilling to forgo the points I have made in this thread. I believe mine to be just as valid. Two things can be accurate to some degree, at the same time. I also don't think anyone is suggesting this kid should be recruited by the SEC. He's a great high school QB. Something our area doesn't produce a lot of. Lots of kids in our area have had arm talent. It doesn't make them any more of an SEC recruit than Creasy. As for the quoted section above, the New England Patriots and New York Giants were regularly accused of having "system" QB's in recent years. How are those "systems" working now that those two QB's are retired?
  23. Pressure doesn't necessarily imply "courtroom" nor did I ever imply anything within the legal system. If this issue were to gain enough traction, there are any number of ways something can take off resulting in pressure for VHSL. Weird things go viral on social media every day and become national stories. Those stories end up leading on the Nightly News and Sportscenter. That type of attention would be enough, I believe, to force VHSL to reevaluate the current playoff system. But as I stated earlier, not enough people care about this to make it go viral. Therefore, it's highly unlikely anything changes and we'll be having this same conversation next year.
  24. Force feeding talented backs and receivers. A QB that can distribute the football in ways very few from our region ever have. A coach knowledgeable enough to figure out ways to maximize that talent. Every coach in SWVA would kill for those options. According to this board, that's something to be ashamed of!!!
