  1. Excellent! Eating at The Railyard is incentive enough to make the trip, but when it's another afternoon game it's even better. Wonder why it's GoFan only? We use the online services for every game we attend and love it, but there was a decent line at the ticket window yesterday for people buying them at the gate. Having ours ready on GoFan probably saved us 10 minutes.

Or sitting 80 yards from the field at Central

Made my first and last trip to Central about 6 or 7 years ago. We got there about 15 minutes before kickoff, as I usually stand at the fence anyway. I didn't realize I was going to need binoculars to watch the game.

who was playing left D end for Union? looked like a big boy!!

According to MaxPreps, his name is Gabe Sneed and they list him at 6'5 245. MaxPreps rosters can be notoriously wrong sometimes, but he is indeed a big dude.

  4. Think Central is a tough place to coach? Yesterday, Fort Pierce (FL) Westwood hired their 11th coach in the last 13 years. Amazingly, the Panthers managed to make the playoffs with winning records in 6 of those 13 seasons. Their biggest problem has been other schools poaching their players, which is rampant everywhere down here. This past year, Westwood lost 4 starters to Vero Beach. Their QB, a DB who is headed to Indiana, a WR who is committed to FSU in the class of 23, and a DE. They also lost a starting OL to Treasure Coast HS. Down 5 quality starters and losing several others to injuries, the Panthers finished 0-9 and had 27 players dressed the last time I saw them play. Who did they hire this time? It's a guy who is a radio host for the local ESPN radio station. Yeah, Wise is probably a tough place to coach, but it can always be worse...

Tullahoma figured out Betsy's offensive game plan about half way thru the second quarter and both teams missed some opportunities but easily the game of the weekend. I watched 7 of the games and man there is some legit talent D1 talent in Tennessee now and it's getting deeper every year.

The Nashville metro area continues to explode and Kevin Creasy has the Oakland program on a roll with no signs of stopping.

Our crew loves Macadoos whenever we are in a town that has one anymore. I can speak for Wooden Pickle, Bellas(we have all of our pre-season crew meets there), and Bonefire. Although it used to be a chain, we STILL mess with the Bonanza in Lebanon. I'm with Sixcat, find the local spots. We ALWAYS get great food and service there and they are usually more than accommodating to host us for our meetings..  I can microwave food at home, looking at you Applebees and Chilis.

I can vouch for the Wooden Pickle. Love it. When I was working, we had a large outdoor sign place in Bluefield that used our resin. We were doing some product trials there one day and they took us out to lunch at a place that was in an old house, and I can't remember the name of it. The she-crab bisque was fantastic. That's probably been 15 years ago.

  7. No idea about the privates, but.....

A - Should be a great battle between South Pitt and McKenzie. I'll go with McKenzie over the Fightn' Roy Dillards in a close one.

AA - Love to see Hampton pull it off, and if they can grind the ball on the ground, they have a shot. I'll go with Westview by 10 though.

AAA - Alcoa with a running clock to start the 2nd half.

AAAA - Should be another great game. I'll go with Betsy in a tight one for a three peat.

    AAAAA - Powell by 10

AAAAAA - If Oakland can contain Destin Wade, they'll win comfortably. If not, this will go to the wire. Oakland by 10.

Tennessee does have a separate division for the privates. The split that they have today all started with the TSSAA fined and placed on probation Brentwood Academy for recruiting and Brentwood sued and the case went all the way to the Supreme Court. Brentwood Academy was the prominent large football power in Tennessee from the time the school opened in 1969, they won 9 3A titles (the largest classification at the time) between 1969 and 1997. The split came 21 years ago for the schools that offer financial aid and the rest of the private schools left to form their own division in 2018. TSSAA labels it D2. and has three classes (1A-3A) and gave Tennessee a total of 9 State Champions. Football is the only sport that is split into more the 3 Classes, everything else is a three class system. There are rumbling that the TSSAA want to go back to a 4 or 5 class format in the future, which will probably happen!

I think 5 classes would suffice in Tennessee. Maybe even 4. There are only 12 schools with enrollments of over 2K. In contrast, Florida has 149 schools with enrollments of over 2K, including 19 over 3K, and 5 of those being over 4K. Cypress Bay in Weston has nearly 5K.

Whats the problem with LCA? I read this and I can't figure out the issue. Yes they are private and yes they sued the VHSL and the VHSL knew they could not win the lawsuit, There was a special called meeting. LCA were doing the things that private schools do all across the state. VHSL could not justify keeping them out by law so they joined. Have they won a football state championship since? The same thing is happening across the nation with private schools. DOesn't Tennessee let the private schools compete?

No, Tennessee has separate divisions for the privates. Down here in Florida they don't, and the lower divisions are dominated by the privates. St Thomas Aquinas even dominates class 7A, but really from 4A on down, the privates are the teams to beat. You'll have a public program like Cocoa or BT Washington in 4A who will make a run, but they will usually meet somebody like The Bolles School or Cardinal Gibbons in the finals.

  10. ....When did the VHSL start allowing private schools to participate in the playoffs? Looking over their schedule, I'd guess Abingdon (or Abintun, as mamaw used to say) is a big underdog. I've lived out of state for 30 years now, but I thought the VHSL didn't allow the privates to participate in the playoffs.

Well it's semifinal week and an unprecedented event will take place in Carter County. With 3 semifinal games all within 18 miles of each other! Kind of like the old days of Southwest Virginia.

In 1A: South Pittsburg (9-2) visits Cloudland (12-1) Cloudland's only loss this year was to Hampton. The other side of the bracket is Trenton Peabody (12-1) @ 13-0 McKenzie.

In 2A: Trousdale County (12-1) makes the 4.5 hour trip to Hampton (10-2) to take on the Bulldogs. Hampton had an incredible come from behind win over Oneida. The other semifinal 12-1 Westview travels to 12-1 Riverside.

In 3A: 12-0 Giles County will be 12-1 Alcoa's next victim and 12-0 Dyersburg travels to 9-4 East Nashville in the other semifinal

In 4A: The trifectas final game is 12-1 Upperman visiting the 12-1 Cyclones of Elizabethton. The other side of the bracket is a battle of unbeatens Haywood travels to Tullahoma.

In 5A: Knox Powell (11-2) plays Knox West (11-2) and 12-1 Page hosts 8-5 Henry County

In 6A: Oakland travel Maryville in a battle of 13-0 teams and Summit (13-0) travels to Hendersonville (10-3)

The Division 2 Title games are already set. These games are set to be played on December 2 in Chattanooga.

In 1A: Donaldson Christian(12-1) takes on Nashville Christian (11-2) In 2A: CPA (10-2) plays Lipscomb Academy (11-1) and 3A: McCallie (12-0) plays MBA (9-3)

I am hoping for a Carter County sweep but Hampton and Cloudland have very tall tasks. Good Luck to all involved and Happy Thanksgiving To One and All!

I can't handle the cold, so I think I'll stay in and stream undefeated Palm Beach Central v 10-1 Treasure Coast. It's amazing that there will be three state semifinal games within 18 miles of each other in Carter Co going on.

Cloudland v South Pittsburgh - It's tough to play on Roan Mtn in brutally cold weather, but the Pirates are too athletic for them. SP by 3 TD.

Hampton v Trousedale Co. - This one will be a little closer. Trousedale by 10

Betsy v Upperman - Betsy shooting for three straight titles, and I don't see Upperman getting in the way. Betsy by 20.

Murville v Oakland - Murville got destroyed in this game last year and I don't think the gap has closed by much. Oakland by 21.

Alcoa v Giles - There's just no way for the other 3A schools to prepare for Alcoa. I'll go with the Tornados by 28

West v Powell - Should be the best game of the night. I'll go with West by a TD.

But to deny any credit for Phil is ridiculous. He wasn't just going to fundraisers and schmoozing. His teams were always well prepared, confident, and knew what they were trying to do. He was spreading the field and playing a spread offense in the early 2000s. He knew the best way to attack an opposing defense. You don't win as much and as often as Phil did if he was a bad coach.

His teams always expected to win. I was telling a D-B fan friend of mine after their first loss to Alcoa that one of D-B's problems is that they don't expect to win games like that. D-B had a lead late and could have salted the game away with a first down. They didn't make it, and you could see their body language say "we're going to lose".....and Alcoa went down and scored the game winning TD, then picked off a D-B pass to seal the win. I told him that the old PV/Appy/Gate City teams always expected to win when they took the field, even if they were an underdog. Alcoa was/is the same way. That was the least physically imposing Alcoa team I'd ever seen, but at no point in that game did those kids believe they would lose.

One thing I've noticed watching these games on nfhs is "Holding" is screamed on every play. This Appo game is terrible.

Last week while watching Palm Beach Gardens at Treasure Coast, there were two guys behind us screaming holding every time PBG ran a play on offense, and it wasn't the first game we went to that had people doing that.

More surprised they held Greenville to 7 points than I am that they won.

Devils have looked other worldly in the speed department this year.

Yep. Surprised, but not shocked that Betsy won, but I am shocked at the score. Too bad I missed most of it when NFHS went down. Thought about going to it, but my blood hasn't adjusted to the cold yet. When we left South Florida yesterday, it was 76 degrees at 6:00 AM and I haven't recovered since we got to Kingsport.

Is anyone else experiencing technical difficulties on nfhs

If you mean it's flatlined, then yes. I was watching Elizabethton v Greeneville and it went from bad to out. Thought I'd watch Palm Beach Central v Vero Beach and everything is dead.

Check with Allegiant out of Asheville and the good looking kid fixing the airplanes is our son. He is now the lead mechanic, soon to be the chief mechanic! Flight costs $109 and takes an hour and forty nine minutes to West Palm Beach.

I saw that. I'm considering it, but I'd have to do a Sunday thru Sunday because the games start on Thursday. It'll depend on who all makes the finals. Would love to see Cardinal Gibbons v Cocoa meet in 4A and one of locals Treasure Coast or Vero Beach make the 8A game. Hope to see Miami Central and Miami Northwestern make their games as well.

Elizabethton @ Greeneville Friday Night at 7. 1 vs. 2 again.

We might go to that one. Would have like to have stayed home and watched Vero Beach at Palm Beach Central in the 2nd round of the FHSAA Class 8A 2nd round, but we're driving back to Kingsport on Thursday. Our daughter and son in-law are officially adopting two sisters that they have been fostering for the last 2 1/2 years. Saturday is National Adoption Day, and they will participate in a ceremony at the courthouse in Jonesborough with other kids being adopted, and three sets of doting new "official" grandparents that are over the moon that these girls will be a permanent part of our lives. If we can't make it to Greeneville on Friday, we'll certainly catch the semifinal game the following week. I'm also entertaining the idea of coming back home on December 16th for the Class 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8A championships in Fort Lauderdale, which is a little over an hour from us, then go back to Kingsport for Christmas.

The TSSAA playoffs roll on. This week is the Quarterfinal Round for the public schools and the Semifinal round for the private schools.

Region 1 has few survivors left.

In 1A: Coalfield (10-2) make the long road trip to Roan Mountain to take on The Highlanders of Cloudland (11-1)

In 2A: Hampton (10-2) the other Carter County team still playing travels to Oneida (9-3) to take on the Indians.

In 4A: The rematch is Greeneville as the (12-0) Greene Devils take on the (11-1) Elizabethton Cyclones. These two teams own the last 4 Class 4A Championships and the winner of this one will probably win it again.

There are no 3A, 5A or 6A region 1 teams left...Good luck to the final 4 remaining!

In Division 2: 1A University School of Jackson takes on Donaldson Christian and MTCS plays Nashville Christian in the semifinals.

2A This bracket is probably the best left in any class in the state. Lausanne Colligate plays Christ Presbyterian and Lipscomb Academy plays Davidson Academy

3A McCallie from Chattanooga takes on Pope John Paul in semifinal and Montgomery Bell Academy plays Christian Brothers from Memphis in the other semifinal.

Cloudland v Coalfield - Roan Mtn will be frigid on Friday night, but I'll go with Coalfield in a close one.

Oneida v Hampton - It's a long bus ride to Oneida, but the Bulldogs have a shot. I'll go with Oneida in another close game.

Greeneville v Betsy - Betsy is the 2nd best team in Class 4A. Green(e) Devils by 17

Murville v Far-gut - Murville by 35 setting up another battle with Oakland.

What's funny is that William Blount which is actually on the far side of town from Maryville IS in Region 1-6A.  The Govs wanted to be in 1-6A to avoid playing Maryville.  What did they get for their wish to switch districts?  Still an 0-5 conference record and 1-9 overall.  Lol

When you're as bad as Bill Blount is, it doesn't matter what district you're in. All they did was increase their travel expenses.
