Just was an opinion leading into this week. Using the previous week's discussion, I figured this week would have several new Hurley Rebel fans on the board gloating about the powerful Rebels. There really wasn't much discussion on the game this week.
You guys waxed your most competitive opponent tonight. Finishing 10-0 should be easy from here on out.
You guys deserve to thump that chest tonight!
-
I really imagined the trash talking this week would be out of control... Surprised it is just starting up today.

Chalk that one up for having Lusk running the show for as long as he did... That guy literally was just guessing at what to do. When they fired him he was pissed. His record was miserable... I mean the guy had to see the writing on the wall.
-
Hurley wins by 3 or 4 TDS... maybe more.
*Somewhere Rebel_Yell is dancing after my prediction*
In all honestly, Grundy is probably the toughest opponent Hurley will face all year. Anything less than a "blowout" cannot be a good indicator for the future.
-
Is Rebel_Yell a new mod? lol
-
Hurley picking up Tazewell... slowly but surely getting there.
-
Glad I lived up to your expectations. You on the other hand...
-
-
Is this Rebel_Yell? Same ole same ole...
Irish will not brag on his team because it is boastful. Union, Graham, Richlands, etc do not hop on here and exclaim greatness everytime they win. Richlands beat Central/Va High handedly and not much word was on this forum. JLA broke a school record (nearly a state record) in the first half and not much mention on this forum. (JLA threw for 7 TDs in the va high game... did not play most of the second half).
I guess what I am trying to get at is Hurley is thumping their chest after beating inferior teams. No one outside of Hurley is really talking much about them so you guys are on here trying to get some excitement stirred up. Rightfully so, but realize most of the state realize you all haven't played anyone. Once you knock off a good team I promise most of this board will probably be singing your alls praises.
-
When you can choose between that or a smooth ride down 81... I am choosing 81. Sorry I don't vacation in Red Ash
-
460 is not quite the most desirable stretch of road in SWVA. Curvy and very mountainous. A 30 mile stretch from Claypool Hill to Grundy takes nearly 75 minutes on a bus.
-
Why the vagueness? Is this a VA school? Riverview from WV?
-
I assume you are referring to Ridgeview? I am not sure just speculating. If that is the case, Ridgeview would gain more points for post season if they played Tazewell, a similar size school. Not just becuase of size but with rider points and such too. Just speculating.
Tough road for Hurley... Not many want to make that trip and with people dropping them I am sure it is tough to find replacements.
-
Uhm yeah, I am going to go with a 4-0 record... JB might have been a decent game in the first half.
-
I was referring to the other thread that vanished.
I can agree that Hurley might not be on the level of Galax and maybe GW (although I am not completely sold on that). I feel they are a better team than honaker and PH though.
I do think it is great one of the smallest school in the state is having some success though. Legitimately, good for that town! Also, I realize the excitement sometimes fills over onto the board from "fanatics".
-
I am not hating on Hurley... In fact I tip my hat at them. They are a solid team that has the make up of possibly being a team that plays into November/December. I am just mentioning the weak schedule. As a sports fan, it is tough to sit back and watch irrational fans talk about how awesome their team is when they play a schedule like Hurley's. Hurley is good... that is a fact but Hurley also plays a weak schedule. Tough to really gauge where they stand IMO when they are playing weak opponents.
The discussion that pops up from Rebel fans is they will win state or at least inferred they will. It is just tough for me to see that when playing teams that struggle to probably field teams and beating them by 50.
-
A "jab" or not.... it is facts there Hilary. I am anxious to see Hurley's combined opponent record at the end of the year.
-
VHS up on Richlands 7-6.
-Howie scores for RHS on a 96 Yd TD PAT no good.
-Howard Scores for VHS on a 60+ yard TD pass.
**Howie's 96 yard TD pass from JLA is a school record**

Questionable move. Practice wise, I don't think will be an issue but planning and preparing is. Coaching one sport is a full time job with overtime... imagine adding 100% more work to an already busy day. One program will suffer I will like.

Holding back is often viewed as a "sports move" but to the county you cannot just send a letter to them saying "I want ole boy to sling that football for another year and win that state championship". All jokes aside, you have to have a credible excuse to hold back in the middle school ages. Maturity being a big reason for it.
As cliche as this is, kids today are very different than kids in the 70s/80s as is their education. The high school curriculum has changed so much in the past 30 years that if someone held back in the 70s/80s/early 90s that it was solely for sports. Today, the move is often driven by sports but the thing most people do not see is the academical advantages you can obtain by holding back a year. College credit is literally at the fingertips of a lot of kids today and SUPER cheap! Why not go to college with some extra college credit so your freshmen year is easier than what it normally is? Freshmen year is a learning curve for a lot of students first because of course load and secondly because of so much freedom. The idea of taking college level English and math to get a head and obtain an idea of how strenuous college work is can only be beneficial. Basically the average high school student could take 6 credit hours of college work to gain an understanding of how much work it will be when they get a 15 hour semester in a year or two. Maturity also plays a large part simply due to the fact a 17 year old guy as a freshmen in college is a ton different compared to an 18 year old guy. Say what you will about it "not being very different" but it is. Maybe not growing up in the 70s/80s but the kids today 17-18-19 year old guys seem to go through 180 degree changes year after year.
Finally, you'd be silly to think Abingdon or Richlands would not want their Qbs for another year (and the same goes for all the great senior athletes). Another year to develop mentally and physically is only beneficial to a high school athlete. Maybe the kid has no desire to play at the next level or maybe they just want to go to a college that will pay for their education, regardless of level? Maybe they just want to be a high school superstar.
