gman, when a team enters another teams stadium they EXPECT to be taunted, they are supposed to be above running over to the student section after a game and instigating an incident and quite frankly, they are lucky the student section didnt pour out onto the field in mass..sometimes when you taunt, you got to put up or shut up..were the fans right?? no, but thats the environment created. and i can tell you first hand that in the 94 sugar bowl in New Orleans my wife and were treated verbally worse by the Gator fans than anyone is ever treated at WVU. you may hate WVU like i hate the chokies but be real, this happens in every league, in every stadium, in every state to some extent, its just some incidents are played out in the media more than others..and VT is not the darling of college football

Yes Florida fans are quite rude, I remember when the story about when Chris Wenkie (Florida State QB) had two pregnant "freinds" on FSU's campus, the next game at the Swamp, the Florida student section threw rubbers at him during a 32-30 upset victory over Free Shoes University.

When Jared Lorenzen (QB Kentucky), the "heafty lefty" QB ran onto the field, they threw twinkes at him. SEC fotball fans are brutal. Don't even ask what happened when Byron Leftwich and the "Blundering Turd" came to Gainsville about five years ago.

Check the Morgantown police logs from that date. Hokie fans were attacked in the restrooms and parking lots.

He freakin slapped him so hard that his helmet turned sideways, geez, how can u justify that?

And no I'm not justifying any actions of Mountaineer fans, altough I was at that game and didn't see anyone get attacked.

I see that you failed to mention the fact that the bottle throwing was started by the WVU fans

[/ QUOTE ]

A fact that was also given to me by a WVU grad in attendance.

I was at the game as well. If I was a WVU fan (which I'm not) I probably would have thrown something at the VT fans if I were them. The only problem with that is, I snuck and drunk too many "mini-bottles" at the game, so I probably would have hit myself in the knee.

This stuff is gonna happen no matter where you go.

If you ask me, the couch burning takes the cake as the dumbest thing in football.

He was telling him to get his head in the game. If Tech wasn't falling apart at the seams at the time ESPN wouldn't even have shown it.

Well congratulations, you've found a picture of one VT fan giving someone the finger. If that is the standard of judging whether someone has classless fans, then I guess every program in the country lacks class.

What you fail to realize is the fact that there is a big difference between a friendly exchange of words between fans of opposing teams (which happens at every college game) and being harassed, physically threatened/harmed, having beer poured on you, or having batteries thrown at you. This is what usually happens to fans of the visiting teams when they come to Morgantown.

The dude with the #7 jersey sat in front of me the last couple of seasons...true, he isn't/wasn't the "best" fan in the world and most definitely his actions were alcohol induced as he had always had a little too much "tailgating" before the game. He was definitely in the minority in our section as being a "bad fan" though.

However, if I remember the "bottle throwing" incident correctly...WVU's fans were the one's who threw bottles first at the end of the game. And Tech fans wrongly returned fire in retalitation. Trust me, they were called out by Jim Weaver and Frank Beamer on Hokie Hotline the next Monday...never heard Rich Rod do anything like that when the WVU faithful get ugly...and several fans were escorted off of Worsham Field by police for their actions...never saw that happen at Mountaineer Field either.

bottom line is you have stupid fans in every stadium at all levels of competition, to place a blame on WVU is wrong, it happens everywhere, some incidents are publicized more than others. the climate of these games will not change and neither will the behavior so lets just put the blame where it lies..STUPIDITY, on all sides...and we can all get back to bein friends..AFTER THIS WEEK..Go Mounties....lol

They have a rough crowd at wv for certain, perhaps not as loud as others, but more hostile than most. But in my opinion the wrong is with the celebrations outside the stadium afterwards, it was that way with the basketball team's success also.

And that said, in my honest opinion much of this for any team is likely from some of the students much more than anyone else in the crowd.

That rivalry does warrant an end for a while.

also herd fans have been complimented numerous times by kanas st. fans and kansas media for their attitudes at their games.

A letter to the herald dispatch.

"MU fans raise the bar on friendliness

I want to express my amazement, delight and gratitude to the multitude of Marshall University fans who so warmly greeted me and so many other Kansas State fans recently. Several of us talked about how many folks with green on walked over to us and said things like, "Welcome! We're glad you're here." Even when the game was over, they said, "Thanks for coming; be careful on your way home."

One K-State fan commented to me that it sure changed his attitude about greeting fans from other schools when they visit Manhattan. We like to think Kansans are friendly, but you sure raised the bar on friendliness.

It was especially meaningful to me because I was a Wichita State student when our plane and then your plane went down in the fall of 1970. Several of my friends lost friends and family. Ultimately, we lost our football program, in large part due to the plane crash. My hat is off to you for not only seeing to it that your program survived but has truly flourished.

Great fans deserve a great team. You have both. And you have made this K-State fan a Marshall University fan for life. Thank you.

it's good to read something positive in all this.

One thing that has been pointed out I believe already in this post is that many of the students "acting a fool" aren't even from WV. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't all but one of the students penalized over the Miami incident in 1996 from out-of-state? I know the three kids kicked out of school were from Jersey, and I believe eight of the nine or so penalized were out-of-state students.

Yes, Bluefield_Rules, they are and I think that is something that everyone who has debated on this topic needs to know. What people in the southern part of the state don't realize is that most of the idiots who act like this are A) a very, very small minority of the student body and B) not from the state of WV. Most of the them are from Jersey and Maryland, and they don't care what the reputation of the state or the university is. They're not from here. They just want to "have a good time" as they call it, but it embarrases the rest of the university and the state. I've gone to school here at WVU for almost a year and a half now and you would be really surprised, if you stood in a WVU student section for a game, how many people don't act like this. Its unfortunate, but the very few morons who do ruin it for everyone else, and I think everybody down south needs to take that into consideration before trying to bash the entire university as if every student here acted like that, because they don't.

Actually, I have stood in the WVU student section. That's where I sat for the 1999 VT/WVU game, the one in which Vick ripped out Mountaineer hearts everywhere. Obviously, there was stuff said to me and my friend throughout the game. But we laughed it off and took it for what it was worth, just talk. And cool enough, there were three more Hokie fans in the student section that had gotten tickets from friends at WVU.

One HUGE (as in overweight) guy screamed in my face, "It's over, go home Chokies" when WVU scored the go ahead touchdown. So I got a real joy out of turning to him when Graham kicked the game-winner and said, "What now ***hole?" He looked as if he was going to cry, and that was so funny.

Ok chokie fans, take off you maroon and orange galsses for a minute and tell Houston you are coming back down to earth. When you get kids that are away from home for the first time and they live with another 20,000 kids that are also away from home for the first time, that equals PARTY. I believe this is what happens at EVERY college campus in this country. Incidents at football games happen at EVERY college football campus.Heck, I've seen similar incidents of bottle throwing and coins being thrown right at Mitchell Stadium from high school kids. I've also seen drunken and beligerent chokie fans in Blacksburg many times and they act no worse or better than the WVU fans I have seen. The reason alot of chokie fans want the series to end? they know every year they may be subject to a butt whippin!!!

Maybe the chokies should defect again and join the IVY league. These seem to be the only class of people who are up to their standards in BLACKHOLE VA.

This thread is just a simple example of why I'm glad this series is coming to an end. It's so pathetic and disgusting the level to which people in the rivalry have stooped. The bitterness, more so on one side, has gotten so out-of-control that this game isn't fun anymore.

Sorry but RIOTS do not happen at every college football campus. Rationalize it all you want but WVU fans have earned their reputation all by themselves.

VT fans want the series to end for one simple reason... The obnoxious, classless, unruly and thuggish fans of WVU. I'm fully aware that 99% of WVU fans and alumni don't fit that description, but like it or not they are the ones people see, and unfortunately you don't see the rest of the fan base doing anything to change it. Instead they just defend it by saying "it happens everywhere!"

And there lies the biggest difference. The true WVU fans won't stand up and challenge the behavior of the moron, classless WVU fans. Instead, they seem to justify that behavior.

Conversely, at most other schools the behavior isn't tolerated by the true fans. They seek to stomp it out and do away with the people involved. A prime example occurred this past weekend in Blacksburg. It was brought to the attention of the VT athletic department that a small group of VT "fans" were behaving in a negative way toward some GT fans. Well, some of the other VT fans in the parking lot summoned a police officer and informed him of the behavior. And the last I heard is that the VT athletic dept. was in the process of revoking the parking pass of this small group and would look into revoking any future tickets they may have.

well ive tried to be rational and i cant b/c folks still wanna play this VT holier than thou, drama..VT is no different than any other school, they are no better, no worse, they usually suck but have had a few good years and may have a few more good yrs in the future but reality will settle in again and people will see that VT is still just a wanna be in college athletics, they will never compete wiht the likes of the USC's, the UT's the Fl St's, the UM's the (former nebraska's and oklahoma's)and so on etc etc..enjoy this run while it lasts b/c it will come to an end and everyone will see that VT and blacksburg is in just as big a hole as WVU and morgantown when it comes to competing with other colleges and locales... and finally, i grew up in Blfd and i have despised the chokies all my life and i always will and i would not let so called 'fans' determine what team i pulled for, so dont blame fan behavior for disliking WVU, you can always stay at home and watch on tv....period
