About the obscurity of Bluefield: -You get excited every time you see Bluefield on any map, or if someone actually knows where it is. -You get excited when someone sees an exit sign for Bluefield that originally had NO CLUE where it was... it proves that the great place of Bluefield really does exist . -You have referred to the Rocket Boys (From: October Sky) (Coalwood, WV) and/or John Nash (From: A Beautiful Mind) (Princeton, WV) while trying to describe where you are from. -You have 'flipped off' someone while forming your right hand into the state of WV to physically show where you come from -You loved it when Bluefield was mentioned in the movie Bull Durham -If you have ever had this conversation: --You to person: ---'Yeah, I'm from a town called Bluefield..' --Other person: ---'Oh yeah yeah, I got you, down there by Charleston!' --you (exasperated): ---'Well yeah...No... Down by...Bluefield!!' -Someone asks you where you're from, you say, “Bluefield,†they say, “oh WV.†And you go, “well, yeah but on the VA sideâ€... same place, whatever -You get excited because there is a REALLY OLD song about Bluefield, WV --Rock n' Roll Baby by the Stylistics -You know you are from Bluefield when you get pissed at Northerners when they think the state of VA STOPS at Roanoke... so sad! Things your friends have said about Bluefield while visiting: -“Bluefield?!?!? But the grass is GREEN!†-“Bluefield?!?!? Is that where they make Bleu Cheese?†Funny Quirks about the town(s) itself: -You go 'out of state' everyday but don't count it -You know that the only reason Bluefield, VA is 'Virginia's tallest town' is that the town limit goes up to the top of East River. -You are proud of the fact that our Wal-Mart was the biggest on the East side of the Mississippi River when it was built -The best hot dogs around are at the Little Store [AKA Double Gates Grocery] -You've had to drive 2 hours to get decent shopping done -You are stopped at a stop light for 5 minutes when no other cars are around! -You know that Hitler listed Bluefield as one of his '50 places to bomb' in the U.S. because of the railroad and coal industries. -Someone visits from out-of-town and you take them down roller coaster hill first chance you get...it's so funny to watch their faces! -You can't think of a single street in the whole town that doesn't go up a hill -You use Tastee Freez as the state-line High School Life: -You brag that you knew/went to school with Ahmad Bradshaw -The highlight of your fall is the Graham-Beaver game -You obsess on whether its Graham-Beaver or Beaver-Graham -You have 'vandalized' the other school before Graham-Beaver -You have ridden through the other side of the state line blaring your horn in victory after the Graham-Beaver -The local hangout spot for Friday nights is either Wal-Mart, the cheap excuse for a mall, or the ever-popular parking lot -You're entire fall [in high school] revolves around the football team and/or the band -The only time you are stuck in traffic is at the Beaver-Graham game or when a funeral is going through town. -You know the plazas in Bluefield VA as 'Old Wal-Mart Plaza' and 'New Wal-Mart Plaza.' -You have suspicions of the building in the Old Wal-Mart Plaza parking lot, the one that used to have the Four-Season's restaurant in it...It's cursed! The Townspeople: - You go out of state and people comment on your accent you didn't know you had -You love going to East River Mountain -You go to the Cascades at least once a year -You say App-a-latch-in Mountains and not App-a-lay-chin Mountains. -You own a picture of the fog rolling over East River Mountain -You want to meet up with many people you just 'meet at the high school' -You can never visit any store or restaurant without seeing at least one person you know. -You attend either Bluefield College or Bluefield State... and you get extremely irked and irritated whenever someone gets the two schools confused -You have used the term 'Park-Narc' -You see someone else you know from Bluefield (which does happen) and they know the only place left to eat downtown.... is the DQ. -You wait with anticipation to attend the James H. Drew Carnival vs. going to Disney World! -You refer to McDowell County people like its another species of human beings -You pronounce McDowell as MAC-Dowell -You always went on field trips to Pipestem and rode the tram down the side of the mountain -You spend your Christmas holiDAY at Mom's house and your holiNIGHT at Mountaineer Bar Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
