Has anyone noticed how many guys are in the color guards in high school bands these days? Gosh this is becoming a epidemic they are so feminine it is almost sickening, this stuff just didn't happen when I was in HS they would have got there butt kicked big time. Just goes to show that times really are changing... Any thoughts on this?

better than sitting at home playing video games...at least they are doing something.

To each his/her own.

I don't know Lance come on you want your son on the flag corp, twirling a rifle/sword or home playing video games? I'll take the video games... thats just my opinion all I am saying is you didnt see this 20yrs. ago, guess they stayed in the closet back then.

no..I hope my kids play football and baseball and all that sort of thing...but if they don't and end up in the color guard because thats what they want to do...then that's their choice to make, not mine...but, I wouldn't put them down for it and it doesn't make them gay or anything else...to me it's no different than the band...it's not my thing, but if that's what a kid wants to do instead of sitting at home on the couch then more power to him...I'm sure those kids work hard and take pride in what they do...I'd support that instead of putting it down.

Do you mean color guard as in the group of kids that are JR ROTC members that display the American and State flags during the National Anthem?

Or are you talking about the flag corp that is part of the band...usually made up of girls who can't twirl a baton or are too big to fit into a majorette outfit???

If you are talking about the flag corp...sure, why not! If a guy wants to be part of that, more power to him...I'd just hate to take the crap he probably takes for being a part of that...might as well be a cheerleader...if you can't be an athlete, at least be an athletic supporter...

i think he's talking about the color guard? do they even have guys twirling flags? I don't pay much attention to the bands at halftime because I'm usually checking scores or posting a score on the Blackberry. I can't imagine there are very many flag guys out there...maybe a few..probably not a lot though...I see a lot of the kids in the JROTC doing the color guard thing though.

First Prince and now quoting from Grease, you are becoming Dennis Miller with the pop culture references.

He is talking about the color guard in the band. You dont see many guys members in a band color guard, but their is no reason to make fun of them, if that is what they want to do.

Yeah. This is an absolutely ridiculous post. All that this shows is how far behind people are when it comes to useless gender stereotypes. If a kid wants to twirl a flag, let him twirl a flag, especially if he takes pride in what he does.

Answer some questions for me. What's wrong with guys twirling flags? And what's wrong with "times changing"?

I am talking about the color guard in high school bands, I have seen two different bands this year with males on the flag corps, they have even went as far as wearing makeup so they can look like the girls. More power to them I am just stating that this didnt happen years ago, yes times have changed I understand that but face it I bet they take a lot of crap from people at school because they choose to do this. I apologize if I upset anyone. I will say this most of them are a lot better than the girls.

Believe he's refering to the flag corp. Watched a cat from Abingdon on the flag corp Friday. He did a hell of a job! Only problem I saw was his choice of uniform. Not very flattering for his build and the color was awful.

Flag corp!!! Not the ROTC, give me a break jeez... I know that in drum and bugle corps they do exsist and maybe these kids are preparing for that later on down the road but going as far as wearing makeup on the eyes is just a little too far for me.

In the band world the "Flag Corp" is called a Color Guard

Will always be referred to as "flag corp" on this board...there IS a difference...

By definition...

color guard

–noun the group of persons, as in the armed forces or at military institutions, who carry or escort the flag or colors during parades, reviews, etc.

n. The ceremonial escort for the flag, as of a country or organization.

nouna ceremonial escort for the (regimental) colors
