applebarn 10 Report Share Posted August 28, 2009 Dont know the names but here are a couple of Gate Citys Rivals. Powell Valley is probably the biggest today but there is a school coming up fast to knock Powell Valley out of that top spot. That team is the Lebanon Pioneers. I did hear something at the Jamboree in Bristol I thought I would never hear though. Gate City fans were cheering for Powell Valley! It was when PV played Virginia High. Guess they hate Chris Thurman more.LOL!
trumpet1988 289 Report Share Posted August 28, 2009 The only nickname I ever heard referring to the PV/Appalachia game was the week leading to the game. We always called it Hell Week. From 1997 til now that game has usually been more hell for Appalachia than PV even though they gave us fits on some games (but still haven't beaten us since 96). PV/Lee high game is called the Battle of the Boot. J.I. Burton/J.J. Kelly is called the Lions Bowl.
GC_Quincy 582 Report Share Posted August 28, 2009 I've never heard any of those nicknames except for Lee and PV. Apple if I had to pick between PV or Thurman, as much as it pains me to say, I'd be pulling for PV.
Beamerball 566 Report Share Posted August 28, 2009 Isn't the Haysi/Clintwood game the Coal Miners Bowl, or something like that? Seems I remember seeing that before.

NewHampshireRed 94 Report Share Posted August 31, 2009 The outhouse bowl was the old Hurley and Garden game, now its Hurley and Twin Valley so even tho its not known as that anymore the rivalry is still there.

applebarn 10 Report Share Posted August 31, 2009 I think the Richlands/Gate City game should become "Battle of the cow bells" That would work. The name it currently has is the same as I have heard the GC vs PV game refered to.

saturn125 10 Report Share Posted September 2, 2009 It should be the same as Richlands, if you didn't know Honaker got theirs 1st and I believe the same company payed for both fields, with a little help from Heath Miller on Honaker's field. They are both really nice fields Anyone correct me if I am wrong on any of this information

plooolt 10 Report Share Posted September 2, 2009 There were actually shirts at the Lebanon-Honaker game calling it Turf War. It was refering to the County as the turf. I believe that the Honaker-Richlands would be better for that name though.
saturn125 10 Report Share Posted September 2, 2009 If I'm not mistaken he gave some money to help fund the field along with Emats but like I said i may be wrong but I have heard this from others.
