hokie07 11 Report Share Posted February 4, 2010 Doc Holliday put together a great recruiting class in 6 weeks, stealing commits from 7 BCS schools. Bringing Willie Korn in too looks like there will be a good quarterback showdown in the summer and into the fall. http://www.greenvilleonline.com/article/20100204/NEWS/2040345/1004/NEWS01/Willy-Korn-to-transfer-to-Marshall Willy Korn to transfer to Marshall Quarterback leaving Clemson in May CLEMSON – Clemson University quarterback Willy Korn will transfer to Marshall University. Korn, a high school All-American at Byrnes in Duncan, said in December he intended to leave Clemson University after graduation in May. He will have two years of eligibility remaining. Marshall is a NCAA FBS program competing in Conference USA. Former West Virginia University and University of Florida assistant Doc Holliday was hired in December as the Thundering Herd coach. NCAA rules prohibit Holliday from discussing Korn until he is accepted as a student and enrolls at Marshall. Trumped in a battle for the starting job a year ago, Korn faces competition for the starting job at Marshall. Brian Anderson returns for his senior year. He was the starter during a 7-5 season after beating out Mark Cann of Landrum. Cann will play baseball this spring for the first time. Redshirt freshman A.J. Graham, Mr. Football and 3A player of the year in 2008 at Godby High School in Tallahassee, Fla., may be Korn’s chief competitor for the starting job. Korn’s exit from Clemson would end a saga that began when he committed to the Tigers the summer before his junior season at Byrnes. As the “hometown” favorite, he was adored by fans. Even after he announced his decision in December, Korn practiced with the team and served as Parker’s backup in the Music City Bowl. His future began to turn during spring practice last year as Kyle Parker deftly juggled the demands of an aspiring starter in football and his responsibility as the starting right fielder on the baseball team. Parker was selected the starter in August but left little doubt in the spring game four months earlier. Rumors that Korn would leave began to circulate when he didn’t play in losses to Georgia Tech and Texas Christian last fall. Korn said Swinney promised him playing time in each game. Korn sat on the bench last season and watched his chance to play dwindle as Parker put up record numbers as a redshirt freshman. “I just really, really want to play real bad,” Korn said in October. As a freshman, Korn had pushed Cullen Harper for the starting job, but a collarbone injury that season and a shoulder injury the following season left his throwing mechanics in tatters. The shoulder required surgery and required extensive work. In six appearances last season, Korn completed 12 of 17 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown. During his three years in the program, Korn completed 46 of 66 passes for 406 yards and three touchdowns. He has a 69.7 percent completion percentage and a passing efficiency of 130.3. Bluefield_Rules 46 Report Share Posted February 5, 2010 Korn was very highly regarded coming out of high school. Of course, he hasn't lived up to those expectations as of yet.
bluefieldRocks 14 Report Share Posted February 5, 2010 I guess Tajh Boyd will take over at QB for Clemson. Nice pickup by Marshall for sure
hokie07 11 Author Report Share Posted February 5, 2010 Korn was very highly regarded coming out of high school. Of course, he hasn't lived up to those expectations as of yet. You're right. Rivals rated him 4* and the 5th ranked quarterback in the country in 2007. If his shoulder is anything close to what it used to be, he'll come to Huntington and compete seriously for the starting position. He's just a great kid and wants to take an advantage of getting to start fresh this summer. He's got new teammates, new coaches, and a new town so hopefully he'll take advantage of this opportunity. Hacker 82 Report Share Posted February 5, 2010 This story is another case of the risky proposition that recruiting really is. Korn looked like a can't miss, and injuries and bad luck change everything.

GMan 3,569 Report Share Posted February 5, 2010 Korn was very highly regarded coming out of high school. Of course, he hasn't lived up to those expectations as of yet. That's always the case for Clemson in general...never living up to expectations. I remember talking to a guy who was a sportswriter for the newspaper in the town where Korn played HS football...it was before a Jimmy Buffett concert in Charlotte, we were all having a great time tailgating...he was talking how Korn would win the Heisman by his senior year of college and how Clemson would become the dominant team in the ACC...GUESS NOT!
