It seems most Va school systems are in a hole for this upcoming school year. Everyone is trying to come up with ideas to save jobs and trim the budget. These are some of the ideas I have heard floating around or published.

cutting all middle school sports

cutting teacher salary

cutting vice principals

cutting AD stipends

cutting stipends for all extra curricular

cutting all nonconference games for hs sports

Taz county website had 3 options on their website, just too lazy to go get it and I'm in a hurry lol. Anyway, what are your thoughts or suggestions.

The superintendent for Norfolk County school's VA (I'm pretty sure that was the county he was from) was on CNN today I watched it during my lunch break at work, and he was talking about the idea of cutting back to a four day work week and extend the hours, to cut one day a week for supplying food, fuel, and ect.. But it doesn't look good for the school system.

There is no "Norfolk County"...likely, Norfolk City schools...

Take away these, and what are the incentives for people and/or families staying in the area? Kiss opportunity goodbye!

Same old story. Going to cut athletics from the budget again. This only gets people's panties in a wad, and they raise hell. The school board knows if they go on record to cut music, art and band the public looks the other way and says nothing. Looking at the numbers in our county, you are talking less than 100,000 towards sports. They are in for fuel and coaching contracts only. The board of supervisors provided each school an activity bus and the coaches drive them. The only reason some kids come to school is for sports. What happens to their budget when they start seeing kids jump across state lines to play sports. The math is simple, each kid that leaves cost the system an average of $5200.00.

Tazewell County's teaching salary is already Bottom 5 in Virginia, so that's getting blood from a turnip.

The amount of money that one would get from cutting AD stipends is tiny.

Eliminating the VP position would probably be the best option, but it's still not enough.

This massive budget crunch is the symptom of an infection that's been in the Tazewell County School Board for years. Apparently, the Big 5 on the Board believe that money grows on trees, and that the Fairies of Big Rock Candy Mountain hand-deliver it to them every two weeks. How else could that justify the $1M+ projects that the TCSB has undertaken while amidst a $3M+ budget deficit?! Like putting air conditioning in all the area elementary schools: a noble goal, but when there's no money, it's SHEER IDIOCY.

I could do a better job at managing this county's money. And I'm not even remotely kidding.

Cut it all, tax rolls and receipts are down. This is the same situation American households face when deciding what best to do when their money is limited. I have never heard a sane arguement that explains why the government considers itself immune to the effects of lack of financial resources.

My two cents

First Tazewell County Schools - budget cuts are a reality of economic downturns. Tazewell Co. is not facing a unique situation. The capital projects are being funded through Federal Stimulus $$$ and can only be spent on bricks and mortar. Yes, tough cuts are coming, and people you may know well could be looking at pay cuts or unemployment, including me. That my friends is reality. How they make those cuts will be gut wrenching for those who make the decisions. (I know, I have had to do that in the past.) There are few easy choices when the cuts are this large. Schools across this state will look very different come August. There will be long-term impacts on the quality of education, how severe only time will tell.

Now for the State - Elected officials do not act like you and I when they are working on the budget. A big part of the reason has to do with elected officials who do not exercise the same sound financial practices they might use in their business and personal life. They do not exercise restraint in their spending in good economic times. They love to put new programs in place to satisfy this or that constituent. When they do so, they attach a mandate that requires others, often local governments. to put the program in place. The local government is then left with a mandated program and no money to pay for it. Then they fact the tough choice to cut other, possibly more important programs, to avoid violating the law and losing even more money. In short, shortsighted folks of both political parties have spent years funding pet projects and programs that they then abandon when times get tough.

I'm a huge sports fan don't get me wrong, but here in Falcon Nation, and I know most of my fellow student body, would not want the arts cut at all. Reduce salary or even cut 8th grade athletics, but dont cut the musical arts out. I feel those instill life long lessons and skill.

Middle school sports are up in the air too! Can you imagine if they cut middle school football how that will go over. Nobody in Tazewell and Graham will like it, but they will go crazy in Richlands.

We need to get rid of all schools and leave education totally to parents. This would save government money and education requirements should be controlled by tests at the end of the years. Those that play sports can do so if they have money to play in a given area. Why does the government have to control education? We need to get off our behinds and teach our own kids!

Yes, lets go back to the days when only the wealthy could afford to educate their young, by hiring the best tutors and the vast majority were ignorant. lol.

The US is heading towards becoming an "Idiocracy"...if you haven't seen the movie, check it out some time...

To paraphrase Dr. Phil; 'those high stakes tests (SOL) how those workin' for ya.'

We teach the basic facts on the test and not what they mean or their context. I told a class today that Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton were way smarter than I am. I told them these guys read, wrote and spoke Greek, Latin, French and English. The fact that they read constantly was also a huge factor.

Today, to ask kids to read, you would think you were asking them to do something horrible.

Are you a socialist?

Are you?

I could be a neo-facist, marxist, leninist, cryptosporidium, pompous, libero/conservative.

I am an informed, educated American who could care less about labels.
