  1. Going to be tough to win at VH. VH had a pretty good club and the big one underneath creates real problems for other 2D teams who have limited size underneath the basket.
  2. Agree. The Bland team in 90ish 91 with Patrick Smith and I think Chad King could flat out play. I knew Patrick well. We hung out some partying on Wilderness Road. Patrick could jump out of the gym as they say. Thise teams in the late 80s and very early 90s were very good, but just not deep due to small numbers. If consolidated back then, that extra depth would have got them over the hump against Lebanon in my opinion. I watched them play at Richlands around 1990ish and couldn't believe the fans they brought. I'm telling ya, they must have brought 1000 people to Richlands. Completely backed their side. I simply don't know where all the people came from.
  3. I can see it for Yew. He's older, has coached a long time, lost a great senior class. This one doesn't surprise me.
  4. Just read the write up about Danielle Sanders in the Roanoke Times. 14 blocks? Who in the heck blocks 14 shots in one basketball game? For the love of God, all Bland County opponents, STOP shooting the basketball in the paint when she's around. After 3 or 4......or 7.....or maybe 10 blocks......the picture should be kind of clear. The NBA record for most blocks in one game is 17. 14 blocked shots is way, way beyond the norm. It would be in the realm of scoring like 75 points in a basketball game. It's actually that rare.
  5. Jennings Boyd, a legendary coach and so powerful in the 70s through the early 80s in basketball it brought national attention. You stack em and rack em with the Blue Demons of Northfork in Hoops and......you would lose the overwhelming majority of the time. Don't quote me, but I think....BluefieldResearcher would know this....Tommy Beasley might have been on that football state title team for Northfork (could be wrong though). Tommy Beasley played at Northfork, then Va Tech, then the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is the father of Chad Beasley (Gate City, VA Tech, Viking and Browns).
  6. Luke Owen's had that program as solid as ever and still kind of trending up. He did a fantastic job. I have talked to people down there (well...2 of them anyway) and they can't tell me why Mullins left. Would love to know like everyone else
  7. So happy to hear this good news. Man, her granddaddy was something special as was the entire county of Bland in basketball in the 60's and 70's. Most on here just don't know about how popular basketball was in Bland County in the 50's ,60's,and 70's and even up until the late 80's with guys like Pat Sutfin, who played at Rocky Gap and Radford University, and guys like Patrick Smith at Bland High. It was basically a county that belonged in the state of Indiana in the 50's,60's, 70's and for a part of the 80's. What got Bland County was population loss like most of SWVA counties, and Bland had little room to spare to take a population loss to begin with, but they were breeding basketball players over in that county in the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Really pleased to hear this about young Danielle Sanders. Kudos to her. I had no idea Joe Stiltner still had relatives left in Bland.
  8. Rax had over 500 locations in 38 states in the mid 80s. Now only about 15 left concentrated in Kentucky and Ohio where it originally started.
  9. Did some googling. Was about 700ish Bonanza and Pondersosas (same ownership) in the USA around 1990. By 2001, only 300. Today, only 13 total (Ponderosa and Bonanzas) and 9 or 10 of those 13 are Ponderosas, and only 3 or 4 Bonanzas left in the United States. Don't quote me on those numbers. They are close but might not be exact. I did the search last night. Lebanon is kind of unique that it's only one out of 3 or 4 Bonanzas left in America regarding what once was, an outstanding steak house. We are getting into "Tastee Freeze" territory here with only about 12 Tastee Freezes left in America. Just rare to find one, much like Lebanons Bonanza.
  10. Bonanza? Wow, that's a blast from the past. Haven't heard that name in 30 years if you are talking about the old steakhouses. I thought they were long gone a 3rd of a century ago.
  11. Lowe needs some titles to be in legendary status.
  12. Nice win for GC, but I agree you with you Stelley. The fact that the Bears were up by a point with 40 seconds left tells me the difference in GC and Union is close to none. GC had kind of,..........or was looking like they might be the one separating from the pack and ahead of the 6 or so 2D teams that are neck and neck and with Union's losses this season, it was looking like Union might be on the lower realm or maybe 5th or 6th best out of those 6 competing 2D teams. Well, neither of the above is true. All dang 6 of them are so close you can flip a coin for any contest. I got Union, GC, Graham, Lebanon, VH, Central Wise about all with a coin flip. These 6 teams are alarmingly close and al 6 are alarmingly close with Floyd County who I think will win 2C. Glenvar, Radford, and Martinsville will still have something to say about that, and if you want to put it a other way, count all 10 teams (6 from D and 4 from C) and all of them are actually very close and i hate to say it......not one of the 10 are what I would call a "good" basketball team by historical class 2 standards. They are "above average" teams for the 2023-24 season. Forget about JM from region 2A, but.....Greensville County and Bruton from Class 2, region A, would wipe the floor with all 10 teams mentioned above from the west In My Opinion only.
  13. We got one over in Giles County that has had a good run. Struggling the past 5 years, but from start to finish, not bad by any means. Two things about this thread or points I take away. It's starting to become pretty clear by the evidence that it is tough to win at VA High and Tazewell and I'm not knocking the TTown or Bristol fans. It just is what it is in football. From Paul Wheeler to Burhead Bradley and to Crist, it ain't easy to win at VH. Look at the success those coaches had away from VH. With Tazewell, Allen's record speaks for itself now at Galax. The above doesn't mean any coach can Never win at Tazewell/VH now or in the future in football, but it does suggest it just ain't easy to win there in football. Baseball is a whole other ballgame for both schools, consistently good for decades.
  14. They don't need to wait on him at WVU for special teams. Dude needs to be returning kicks (as in Sep 2024) then worry about his development and all of that at WR, but get dude on the field early. Just crazy explosive. He even made Martinsburg look bad a few times and it didn't matter who Princeton played, he made every opponent look bad at least once.
  15. Correct. Pipestem beat Auburn Baptist Christian Academy, not Auburn High. Auburn returned everyone on a team that lost a nailbiter to rival GW in the semi's and had mltiple close battles with GW like always. It's no surprise that Auburn beat GW. They will play again probably 3 more times this year.
  16. Austin Coe, DE, Marion, signed and committed to Air Force. Eli Campbell, C, Princeton, signed and committed to Air Force. Cayden Cook Cash, LB, Riverheads, signed and committed to UVA. Landen Clark, Athlete (likely safety), Radford, signed and committed to Elon. Any updates on other kids, Clements? I understand Clements had offers (I think) from Army, Navy, UAB, and Florida A&M. Any updates on the two senior studs from Galax?
  17. Go to website. Click on the elipsis (3 little dots at top right of screen). Scroll down to Settings. Click Privacy and Security. Click on Site Settings. Scroll down until you see Insecure Content and Click on that. Next, add fourseasonsfootball.com to "allow to show insecure content." This should fix it.
  18. I'm not trying to be too much negative Nancy here and I know and apologize for it coming off this way, but so help me God, I'm just being objective from one guy's opinion, and I think it's all 2D has to offer, but unfortunately, the same with 2C. I think GW and Auburn would win 2D overwhelmingly and Narrows would have a shot at it. It's the worst I've ever seen 2D in my lifetime memory of watching HS basketball in SWVA. I'm still going Graham in 2D because of the athleticism by default. It's about matchups though. If Graham faces some guys with size (VA High) and has an off shooting night, they lose easily. 6 teams can win Region D.
  19. BigW I agree with you. From Central to Graham to VH to Union to Lebanon to Gate City, there just isn't anything standing out. I still think Graham wins the region if I had to pick a team, but largely by default and here's the thing, it's the same scenario in Region 2C. Add Floyd County and Martinsville and maybe Radford and you have 9 basketball teams that are within 7 points of each other on any given day in the West. May sound crazy, but I think there's 9 teams thst could represent the West against JM and all 9 have a similar chance. Just my opinion.
  20. What told me a lot about JM's AD was that he QUIT, cowarded down against the Big Red from Riverheads in football this year. He knew what was coming with that game as they would have got the beat down similar to the way they put the beat down on opponents in hoops. JM wanted absolutely zero part of that match up.
  21. I thought JM wasn't going to the Big Shots Showcase. What's interesting though, if the two teams do play in a couple of weeks and then met in the state title game again, I would bet this would be the first time in the history of Virgina in any big 3 sport (basketball, football, baseball) that in Class 1, 2, or 3, that a Region A team and a Region D played in the regular season and then turned around and played a 2nd team in that season for a state title. I would be totally shocked if that has ever happened.
  22. I agree Duke, but the problem is, it's a different team playing them each year and each team has the thought of, 'this is our chance, win or lose, we made it to the title game and are runners up." If you had a situation like at Radford where Radfords players and coaches would have stayed/not retired and Radford loses 2 or 3 state titles in a row to JM and gets blown out, then by the 3rd or 4th go around, they say enough is enough and don't show up. But as long as we keep rotating teams, for example Radford or East Rock or Gate City or possibly Graham or Floyd this year, it will never end. You need one elite powerhouse from the West that is nearly a sure bet each year to play JM so they can lose and get tired of it, but the days of Gate City, Martinsville, and now Radford are about over.
  23. I watched GC for first time last night. Graham's better by 6 to 7 points. The entire region is the worst for not just 2D, but also 2C that I've seen since the turn of the century, 23 years. Not only that, region 2B is turrrrrrible. Graham has had probably 8 or 9 teams, maybe more........that are better than this 2023 team since the year 2000, and this years Graham team has a very strong chance to play for a state title against the East, JM. The state of Virginia in Class 2 is that down this year. Worst I've ever seen in my lifetime or memory of HS basketball. This isn't hyperbole. I'm giving my opinion. The best 3 teams in the state are from 1 region. JM, Greensville County, and Bruton, and if Brunswick wouldn't have dropped from Class 2 down to class 1, it would be 4 teams as 1,2,3, and 4th best from one region (Region A). P.S Floyd is the best in 2C, and they are right there with Graham, but they don't alarm you with the eye test either.
