  1. Trevor Wagner. Had 5 tackles plus a HUGE sack that killed all Richlands momentum. The numbers won't be crazy but his sack may have been play of the game
  2. Ah it's not a big deal, Richlands could've went around but Union band was on field early
  3. Anyone have any good pics from last night? I need a good picture showing both teams.
  4. I have no problems with the penalty being called
  5. It was not nearly as vicious as some have described.
  6. they would. Adkins only played like five snaps. If he plays entire game, CW can't stop him
  7. The genius at coalfieldsports.com mentioned same thing. Check it out!!!!
  8. Over eight games, the total margin is only 15 points (206-191). Only one game has been decided by more than six points, none by double digits, and six of the games have been decided by two points or fewer. http://coalfieldsports.com/2018/08/30/richlands-union-has-became-swvas-annual-game-to-watch/
  9. Ridgeview would beat Chilhowie by 21+.

Unions is very good. Always good turnout and teams run some of the T-formation to get the kids accustomed to the formation and how to run it. Union lost a lot of great p-nut coaches over the past five years or so but they are getting quality coaches into the fold now and should have it back up to top level very soon. Haven't saw much spread, but it's hard for 10-12 year olds to really understand all the spread concepts.
  11. That kickoff wasn't a real fumble tho, I don't consider that the same as a fumble in the backfield. He just had trouble switching the ball. I believe there was only one fumble on the exchange.

Once the contracts are up, dropping one of the TN teams and picking up a team closer in talent and expectations like Lebanon makes sense. If you're rebuilding from the bottom, have realistic goals. You aren't gonna compete with Boone or Tennessee High when you can't compete with Lee High, so schedule more realistically. Getting wins and showing signs of improvement are not the same, but kids respond to winning. A great team learns more from playing a better team and losing, but a bad team gains very little by losing by 60. So, like you said, Lebanon, Eastside, etc.. would be more appropriate for GC at this stage. No need to have long contracts, just one home and home, and then if GC can get back to their standards, go back and try to find games in NE TN.

For example-Ridgeview was 2-8 as recently as 2016. By 2018, they went 9-1. Now, their schedule is nowhere near as tough as GCs, GC has one of the toughest schedules around and Rick Mullins is one of the best 2-3 coaches in the area and GC cannot hope to get someone as good as Mullins, but that shows that with talent, you can turn around a program if you have a good-ish coach and a couple good classes of talent. I'll be shocked if GC couldn't be a 6-4 team next year or in 2020 if a good HC was hired.

But let's not pretend GC is Thomas Walker, GC was in the playoffs in 2016, won 10 games only four years ago. Realistically, GC has had two bad years in a three year run. It's not a death sentence. GC was relevant two seasons ago, it shouldn't be seen as a gigantic feat for GC to be competitive.

Kudos to you, that's very realistic. Once a program falls as far as GC has fallen, from state title in 2010, making deep runs in 13/14, to winning 1-2 games, it'll take some time to rebuild excitement. You may get lucky and have an uber talented group of 7th or 8th graders and get back to making the playoffs and winning 6-7 games in 2-3 years but realistically it takes five years or so to build the youth program back to standard and revitalize the fans and kids into wanting to be a part of a winning team.
  16. Counts is totally right, UVAW would smash Greeneville by 50+ points. The gap between high school and college is large, there's a reason not all HS players even at the level of Greeneville can play college ball. UVAW is on the upswing too, program is getting better every year. and I'm not sure of the logic behind ranking VHS ahead of Union, they had that benefit game in Bristol and 1s v 1s, Union was clearly better. Not a huge gap at all but Union looked better
  17. Too many penalties I totally agree, need a much cleaner game. But Union only put it on ground once IIRC on a mix up behind the line but Turner recovered it.
  18. everyone should vote!! http://coalfieldsports.com/2018/08/27/vote-for-coalfield-sports-week-1-players-of-the-week/
  19. I hope it rains ten inches and is a monsoon. Slow down those downfield passes lol

  21. I was never a huge fan for precisely those reasons you listed, most notably the fact about pressure. It's easy to get burnt if you can't get quick pressure and teams can game plan and scheme up ways to negate pressure and give the QB time to make an easy read for yardage. Teams now run 4-5 wide sets WAY more often, unless you've got really fast OLBs capable of playing in coverage for most of the game and having great instincts against the pass, you're gonna give up tons of completions and yards simply because slot receivers, on the average, are considerably more athletic and quicker than OLBs. The only alternatives are to play zone, pass receivers on across the middle and ALWAYS tackle surely. Zone coverage is not easy to learn if you've never played a zone, so its hard to try and implement zone looks in one week of game prep if you haven't been practicing a lot of zone looks in your camp. I'm a HUGE believer in scheming to your talent and not forcing talent into a specific scheme, by that I mean if you have four very good down linemen, i.e. running a 3-4 regardless of talent isn't always a smart move. You should always be tinkering with formations and schemes based on your players instead of trying to cram ill-fitting pieces into a look. I understand trying to work basic concepts regardless of talent but there always has to be some wiggle room to adjust and play your opponent. What works against a run heavy I formation isn't gonna work against a HUNH, 5-wide offense so you have to be willing to pull a linebacker off the field and send in a DB. Union did show they recognized and were going to change up looks when Guerrant, 24, moved from a LB position to more of a ROVER/SS look. Being rigid and unwilling to make a move can get you beat and beat badly by a smart team with a smart coach who excels at exploiting an opposing team's weaknesses. I'm pretty sure Mance fits that bill lol. But the Union staff sure as sh it isn't stupid, there's a good chance they were saving looks and formations for this week. Union rarely if ever blitzed and never blitzed anyone but an inside linebacker Thursday, never once bringing edge pressure. That'll change next week as the coaches grow more comfortable with these kids and are more willing to open the playbook.
