  1. It seemed like Bears were at the forefront, but Miners, Mountain Lions/Panthers and Wolves were considered.
  2. I can attest 100% that students got to pick colors and names. The best names were not picked, IMHO, but I wasn't a student. Lonesome PIne High and Heritage were some finalist for Union. Heritage was thrown out because of the existence of other Heritages. My personal favorite for Eastside was Twin Rivers. Other mascots for them were the Griffins and Hellbenders, for the salamander. The original names for the 3 were going to be Wise Co Central, East and South. I think Central stayed because they couldn't think of anything better. Eastside is obvious from that list. So, Union is really the only unique name... which isn't saying much.
  3. You might get the vote for the oddest reason of not liking a school. Lol
  4. Congratulations to the Bobcats! They definitely showed up and showed out today. Riverheads got yards on the ground, but not on those crucial 4th downs, and they never seemed to wear the Radford D-Line down. I knew Clark was not going to be stopped, but I'm still surprised that Radford shut down CCC so effectively.
  5. That was rich! The level of bias to declare that is off the charts!
  6. The real question is will all those accolades be enough to keep their players from coming across the state line? Asking for a friend. Haha
  7. In a public K-12 school system, it is this common for virtually every position. Almost all go to a relative, friend or friend/relative of a friend. Very few "unknowns" are hired. Once you get in though, you're family is set for generations.
  8. He still have that Roy Orbison tattoo?
  9. The QB position for Union will be key. I like Bostic at WR IF we can find a good throwing QB. Otherwise, there will be a lot of wasted talent. If the QB can run and throw, like Anderson, even better.
  10. I believe that's just assumed and goes without saying. lol
  11. Lots of things going on up there. Not having the same level of talent as years past is one issue, but overall, they've simply not been the same since Jimbo was removed.
  12. Talk about a program that has fallen into disarray, JI Burton. Geez!
  13. In addition to what @cityofRaven said, there are a lot of traits particular to SWVA that aren't seen in other parts of the state, or country for that matter. We are bonded by a common heritage, and more like family than acquaintances. Take the flooding that devastated the Hurley community in Buchanan Co for example. That town is over 2 hrs away from BSG, but the town/high school organized a food/supply/money drive at the football games to take up donations. This same scene was duplicated at other towns all over SWVA. As for HS football in particular, it's a part of that shared heritage, and while we may be rivals on the field, nobody wants to see another community in a bad situation. When Chris Akers was relieved of his duties at GC, that thread was bigger than this one. We want to see all teams competitive...just not TOO competitive. haha
  14. Just an outsider looking in on Saturday and the 2019 game against Appo, I thought Graham was the better team both times. I thought Appo benefited from shear luck, and Radford benefitted from Graham's mistakes and poor offensive schemes. I will say that Radford was way closer to Graham than I expected. This is where video never tells the whole story when trying to gauge a team I've never seen in person. As I watched on Saturday, I was thinking that Graham fans know how Union people have felt in several big games over the years. I would rather get beat 40-0 and know we didn't have a chance than lose a close one and continue to wonder "what if?"
  15. That's "Big Mike" He was walking around on the field in BSG with a sleeveless shirt while it was still 40 degrees. He definitely wants to be seen. I started to tell him to put on a jacket, but I know where I'm at in the pecking order. Lol
  16. I can't speak for the whole year, but Jennings wrecked Union's offense last week... repeatedly.
  17. I really don't get the offensive scheme for Graham today. It's been obvious all year that Radford's offense was explosive, but their D-Line was vulnerable to the power run. Bobcats have speed everywhere. Even Graham wasn't going to out athlete them. This is why I thought Union would have had an excellent chance at beating them. Control the clock and run. Graham was very successful last week with it, but let's spread the field and be cute with a team faster and more athletic than Union. Don't get it at all. Maybe Turner and Palmer can only game plan against each other. Seems like they take turns Congratulations to the Bobcats on their victory today! Next week will be interesting. I don't see RH abandoning the run and passing and Radford isn't going to start running. We'll see if the Bobcats can stop the power run a whole game if the Red Machine can stop such an athletic team.
  18. I just wish Graham made this many mistakes last week. I also don't understand why they're not going more with a power run game.
  19. Yes he is. Everyone talks about Union's sophomores, and rightfully so, but we are losing some fantastic seniors.
  20. If nothing else, THAT shows how inept they are! Lol
  21. The jamboree idea is a good one. All the impediments you mentioned most likely wouldn't hinder a jamboree. Those are never packed out. With the improvements to the Park, I don't see a Riggs varsity game taking place again. I think that ship has sailed.
  22. You're both right. The improvement on the line was very noticeable from game 1 to game 2. Would it have been as noticeable if a different back was running? Probably, but not as much. Clements ruled the day. No 2 ways about it.
  23. He surpassed 2000 yards, in 2014, during the John Battle game.
