  1. Unions physicality really seemed to take ER by surprise. I wouldn’t say they were soft, but you could tell they weren’t used to being hit in the chest. Nickel got shut down about as well as you could expect to shut him down, but you could still see his talent. Take him off of that team and I’m not sure they win their district.

  2. If Union gets Graham in the rain, I like our chances. Union played the graham passing game very well other than some deep throws in the first meeting. The QB runs were very effective for the G men though, so Union will have to clean that up.

The park is going to be Rocking and Rolling. That’s a guarantee.

Huh? Union works out of the spread for the majority of snaps. It's for sure a run first offense, but the T isn't ran nearly as often as the spread.

Last week, Union had much, much more success out of the gun compared to under center. Lee was stacking the box (as every time likely will with a young QB) and when Union went under center it made yards much harder to come by on the ground. I'm not sure I would run the T at all, but I for sure would only run it inside the 10-yard line and maybe short yardage situations on third down. Spacing is huge, if you can create space by formation, I'm in favor. It's easier to run against seven or eight defenders in the box as opposed to nine or ten.

I also believe running out of the gun is a more effective way to get the QB involved in the running attack, it gives your runners more options and better vision lanes while also allowing some true RPO looks. I'd love to see Union try more RPOs, but it's a lot to ask of an inexperienced QB. Union has weapons on the outside, you gotta be able to utilize them fully and it's harder to do out of the T. If you have a productive power run game from the gun, I guess I don't see the need for going under center. It opens up so much more of the field for either rushes or passes. Screens, intermediate passing routes, the deep ball, PA passing, etc...are all available from the gun. It's much harder to do some of that stuff from the T, especially with a young QB.

This has been the BigWinners unnecessary rant of the week.

You make great points. But for the last few years, 2016 and 2018, (I won’t include 17 due to the wildcat offense) the vast majority of unions snaps against Richlands have came in the T. Union stayed in it in 2016 @ Ernie Hicks until the last 5 or so minutes of the game where they went to the spread.

    Question to the UNION fans...

How did the LB's look on defense tonight?

I feel bad I could not make it there tonight😞

They were solid. Held contain pretty well. There were a few moments where they allowed some things to open up, but overall the LB group and entire defense was good.

Not sure what all Eastside has back. I know they lost Lawson and another big contributor but cant remember his name.  If they even resemble what they had last year they will make it a game.  They were a very gritty bunch and seemed to be well coached the few games I seen them play.  I'll be at the game tomorrow.  I heard tonight that the JV would play around 6:30 and Varsity would follow.  I'll try to double check and find out for sure.

Thanks. I figured it would be around that time but I wanted to be sure. I went to many GC basketball Games last year and am interested to see them again.

Anyone can attest that were there, the Ridgeview and Union game this year on the Ridge was probably the highest attended game in these parts in a long time.  Cell phone signal was shot because of the high number of folks there and it took forever to get out after the game as well.

I’d say Appomattox @ Union last year had more. But In games involving two local teams, the crowd at  Union/RV would be tough to beat.

I agree with you. Considering all the senior talent that graduated from the 17 team, it was actually impressive seeing new young blood step up this season. Next 2-3 season Union will be a powerhouse. Just wonder about the QB situation though. I'm sure that will pan out well too.

The QB position will be fine. He has a TON of potential. My biggest concern is just mixing in a youthful team with a very tough schedule.

Yeah was usually a 1 or 2 point game til this year. With Union coming down and I'd rather take that shot at Union why there down.  I think

    1) Ridgeview

    2) Union

    3) Lee would be a good way to start the season.

I think Union will definitely surprise some people. I think next years team will be better than this years. Call me crazy, but I expect it.

All I know schedule wise for the bears for sure is weeks 1-4. So here it goes Lee, Richlands,  Letcher Co.and Graham waiting on Morristown to see who else we would play it will be them or Elizabethan not Science Hill. Got my info from the main man. That's a 4 game gauntlet for the new guys.

A gauntlet to start the year, and then Graham in week 4, followed in some order by  Ridgeview, Abingdon and whichever NETN team we get. That’s another tough stretch.
