  1. When I first saw the name of the thread, I started thinking of Harry Carey and Wrigley Field :) Seriously, if anything, use the money to improve on the current grass field and the remainder on the stands, bathrooms and other stadium amenities. The dollars will go much farther instead of going to a synthetic turf field. I love a nice field as much as anyone else but with budget constraints facing this region as a whole, there are more prudent and pressing needs than an extra burden on the taxpayers. Don't know if this is an option for Galax, but is there a chance for private donations/fundraising to cover most or all of the cost of the desired renovations? As others have stated, many of the grass fields are good playing surfaces. I'm not sure that bermuda would work in Galax but maybe there is a bermuda hybrid that might suffice. I'm not a turf management expert....just throwing it out there in case someone on this forum has expertise in field/turf management.

  3. It was an exciting game. I don't have the stats to back me up but it seemed like Blacksburg had a 2 to 1 time of possession ratio....maybe more.
  4. I will vouch for Bennets....very good barbecue ðŸ‘ðŸ‘
  5. [quote name="Bigrhsfan" post="345938" time! Some weekends, we will hope on my bike and ride down and stay over night and always go there to eat dinner, sometimes we go to Bennetts BBQ, but most of the time it's Alamo. They also have a fantastic burger. They grind the meat fresh you get a full 1 pound burger and what they call a mountain of fries..........mmmmmm gooood ! Now you know why I am 260lbs.....lol
  6. I haven't seen Union but I saw Crockett in a jamboree. Union by 4 touchdowns.
  7. I'm not a fan of holding kids back for athletic purposes. Eventually, skill overcomes the size and strength advantage gained from holding back. Many of us have seen younger siblings do very well in sports because they played with the older competitors of big brother/sister. In my opinion, the best athlete from this area in their respective sport is Coy Craft who plays in the FC Dallas system. To my knowledge, Coy never played down a day in his life.....in fact, he played up at least 1 age group and sometimes two. If a child is held back for academic or social reasons, I'm ok with that decision. I'll say this, there are hold backs at every school........no one has the market cornered so I don't call out any particular school.
  8. I don't think it's a crazy strategy, especially against teams with high powered, quick strike offenses. The loss of field position, as pointed out by others, really doesn't mean that much against a Richlands or Abingdon. I personally wouldn't use it against a team who is committed to the run and has to grind out drives....chances of offense making mistakes are greater on long drives than quick strike, speedy teams. I'm sure the Blacksburg coach will allow the game situation determine if he chooses to go for it on 4th every time. One side note that I don't think was mentioned was the elimination of a bad/dropped snap or blocked punt.....those things have a tendency to change the momentum of a game in a big way. I'm excited that we get underway this Friday night. Hope all the teams play to their potential and that no one gets hurt. Safe travels to and from whatever games your are attending. Go Falcons and Go Wasps!!
  9. Ed Reynolds - Drewry Mason H.S., UVA and about 10 years with the Patriots. Tim Goad - Patrick County H.S.; UNC - 8 years with Patriots, 2 with Cleveland and 1 with Baltimore Shawn Moore- Martinsville H.S,; UVA and Denver Broncos Roberts Jones - Nottaway H.S., ECU and Dallas Mike Compton - Richlands: Patriots, Lions Ahmad Bradshaw - Graham (saw him play basketball) - various teams Ferrell Edmunds- GW Danville, Maryland: Dolphins If he can avoid more injuries, I think there is 1 more that might be on the list........ Devon Johnson, Richlands, Marshall and ???? I really think he can play somewhere, just not sure of his position....he has the physical tools to play on Sunday if injuries don't get in the way.
  10. Jesse Penn played for the 81 Martinsville team. He played parts of 2 seasons in Dallas before a neck injury forced him to retire.
  11. We actually liked Hanging Rock....however, would love to play at some of the others in the area when/if I get a chance to go back there. My oldest son got to play Hidden Valley when he was playing high school golf and he too, liked that course. Sixcat, have you played Olde Mill in Laurel Fork? For a regional course that isn't my regular home course, it is my favorite. There are still many courses in the area on my wish list to play but I look forward to my next golf trip to Laurel Fork. I get there maybe once or twice a year.
  12. Mine is from my graduation year...not my number. Played baseball at ECH and number was 11.
  13. I need to incorporate hacker into my user name somewhere.....I've seen a fairway very, very often.....it's seldom that I'm hitting from it though! :) Love to play...in fact, took the day off when AHS played Northside and played Hanging Rock in Salem prior to the Falcon game. Course record is still safe.... LOL.
  14. Great season by Richlands. Nothing to be ashamed of....you all had a VERY GOOD TEAM.
  15. I want to thank everyone for the updates. I don't have access to an online broadcast and this is the only way I can keep up with it. Pulling for Blues to win in OT...if they can't get fg in regulation. Good kicker for you all.
  16. Hope the D can step up and Blues get a chance to win on OT.
  17. Deep fried turkey is the only way to have it and I am fortunate enough to have it again this year. Mountain Man.....I have some peach flavored beverage that you might want to try.....way better than that saki you spoke of some time ago.
  18. Turkey or ham?????? Both! Deep fried turkey is my favorite but I don't turn away (and it shows) ham either :) Go Falcons!
  19. I have not watched any film of Appomattox but I cannot imagine Richlands not having a legitimate chance against them. I know that the D of Appo is good.....maybe very, very good. Richlands has a very good O line, excellent quarterback, good rb and multiple receivers who can catch and run after the catch. I believe that at the high school level, a good balanced offense has an advantage over a good defense....I might even make the same statement at the small college level as well. Asbury can make precise throws....the passing game will help open up the run. The D on Richlands is excellent as well....strong line and Holmes plays with a high motor. I can't imagine that defense getting abused by Appomattox...but again, I haven't seen them play either. If I didn't have to go to Roanoke and back Friday, I might have considered making the trip to watch this game. It is a later start time and I might still get a "wild hair" to do this but don't know if I am willing to handle 2 consecutive days on the road.....father time is undefeated and the undisputed champ! LOL Should I lose my senses, and it wouldn't be the first time, does anyone know how many visitor seats Appomattox accomodates? Last thing I want to do is make a long trip and have to stand to watch the game. Good luck to the Blues. Safe travels.
  20. I think LB and Northside have similar styles. Very good on defense and a run first offense. AHS certainly has the ability to win if we play to our potential. I will be there in person cheering on the Falcons!! Good luck to Richlands, Union and Norton in their upcoming games. Pulling hard for all the schools in this neck of the woods. Safe travels to all going to and from the games....and to and from wherever it is that you may go this week to spend time with family and friends.
