NO SURPRISES THIS YEAR FROM UNION,we will run fullhouse and the spread.Zirkle will be our workhorse and OWENS will be the speed and catch passes in the flat for some one on one .I expect RICHLANDS to run run run,to limit our possessions just as we did last year, the "D" for MANCE and team will make UNION beat them with the pass, and I know nothing on RICHLANDS DBs this year except what has been spoken about on this board, and I dont think they are as good as they were last year.Turner has alot of games under his belt now and he only had one last year this time.I think he will have a big game but the rain may prevent that

last year i spoke about the fullhouse as being the difference, it was, and i dont see MANCE letting UNION run at will again. I would think that he will make UNION and MITCHELL beat him with the pass. HARVEY coming in will only help that plan to limit the downfield throws.On the RICHLANDS side i see the QB run as the biggest challenge to our "D" and a few screens to the backs to slow down the rush.So far no one has been able to run on UNION and I think MANCE will know that.Its going to be sloppy, whoever turns the ball over the most---looses

Can we say wildcat? no its not Mitchell running it, its the kid who ran everywhere against norton as the second string QB.That kid can motor, kinda looks like the qb from CLEMSON, no i dont know anything but just threw it out there.If its dry ,we will throw ,if its wet we will throw, but much shorter. I would expect Mance to blitz almost every down and hope to get to TURNER before he can get the ball to MITCHELL. Bring your rain coats it should be a good one

I have a honest question on transfers.When a student athlete transfers schools does he/she have to be with a family member that lives inside that school district?if so can they live in say, TAZEWELL and go to RICHLANDS ,as long as they stay inside the same school division?Iknow there are cases where children are placed inside non family homes due to court action, but as a general rule do they have to be with a family member

Turner stated he started a 10 grader on the line and worked several other under classmen in on the line, he stated that he wanted to get some reps in with the backups. I am sure he dont want to use JEB STIDHAM both ways like he did at BETSY.

Back in the 90's APPALACHIA VS PV we had a gate of 10,000. I worked the game and in most places they were 5 deep. I didnt see the first play, hell i couldnt see the field.When you look at google earth and compare BULLITT PARK to RICHLANDS FIELD , we have more seating FOR THE VISITORS, but it would be a great to play at UVA at WISE

If one could step back in time , I wonder how many people would have bet "the house" on the total point spred of all the games played between UNION AND RICHLANDS would be less than 10 points?Its always a great game and I for one liked RICHLANDS, of course I stand all the time.It reminds me of the APPALACHIA PV games at RIGGS stadium, you had to move when the ball got inside the 10 ,or you might be part of the play.GOOD kids on both sides ,well coached and the "FANS "ON BOTH SIDES ---NUTSOOO

UNION VS BETSY, like others have said UNION done some good things, but there was room for improvement. The thing that stuck out was the line play, no 50 for BETSY dominated our guys, he must have had 8 solo tackles in limited playing time.I also noticed that JEB STIDHAM did a good job of crowding the line of scrimmage while the other linemen seem to be back off the ball = more yards per carry and futher back to the other teams back field.What a diiference a year makes,TURNER LOOKED GREAT, and so did the other skill guys, but the line play needs work,sled time will help these young men, and the extra time will help them.

James will stay put on d, look for the younger Jenkins kid to be on a island, Jeb Stidham and Barnett will be down inside, Owens will be d backfield with Zirkle at LB , the Gibson kid decided not to play and that would have been another db and back up Qb, this is all a guess of course, based on last year. We should be quick, not Appomattox quick but still better than last year

Most of skill guys are back , o line may have 1 or two starters back, on "d" STIDHAM is back as well as MITCHELL, ZIRKLE and several more.ALL will depend on line play, several of new guys had plenty of snaps due to blowouts and injuries last year. Everyone is talking about MITCHELL,but you better watch 17, DAKOTA OWENS and the JENKINS kid. BAILEY TURNER will return at QB but the line will be the key

Just because you are a smaller school doesnt mean that you are not good, look at the 1974 Powell Valley team, that included BARRY HAMLER, DENNIS DAVIS, JERRY MYERS , AND JAMES MITCHELLS dad JIMMY, 28-0 WON STATE,with BURRELL PAYE as coach, they had wins over DB coached by BUCK VAN HUSS, they also beat several aaa schools in CHRISTMAS tournaments .My point is that anyone who works hard and has talent (GATE CITY does)can win state,look what APPALACHIA and JONESVILLE did at 5-5 , then win state.

I think there will always be at least 2 schools in Wise County,I may be wrong but the TOWN OF BIG STONE GAP has more population that the other towns and cities in WISE COUNTY, with that comes votes ,not only in the local election but state wide.That was proven in the 2 schools one site concept a few years ago.The Kilgores went to bat for BIG STONE GAP,and the rest is history.I agree with the other post in that UNION being empty would be a political nightmare and that CENTRAL being "THE WISE CO SCHOOL"would just insure that every kid would go to LEE HIGH, hell most of the NORTON kids dont like CENTRAL

EASTSIDE closing will just make CASTLEWOOD become bigger and close SAINT PAUL down too, because the younger kids will want to follow the older siblings.JI BURTON wanted to have what?two seats on the school board , in order to join WISE COUNTY ,right? I thought that was reasonable, there should have been something worked out. I was told that the school system in NORTON accounts for a large amount of the budget and that barring a large influx of kids=$$$$ that they would have no choice but to revisit the offer from WISE COUNTY in less than 5 years.I dont know how the kids at BURTON feel about things, all I know is that the kids deserve the best education that we can give them

SAFE PLACE.....HAHAHAHAHA,,I carry my safeplace with me, cant say the Gate City has ever treated me bad,love the school community and pride,the only thing that offended me was the statement "we need to get a job in BIG STONE GAP"., I am still called BULLDOG by my friends from SCOTT COUNTY S.O., come meet me on the visitors side at the GATE CITY/ UNION game , I will be talking to TERRY KILGORE,or JUDGE KILGORE or YOUR AD all of which I consider close friends,and me being at a 10 ,come on man you have to be kidding ,its more like a.00005 , I wondered why my comments drew so much attention, but then i realized that there are no positives going on at GATE CITY FOOTBALL, or at UVAWISE/WISE CENTRAL

Union has no tradition?excuse me? playoffs every year, final four in 2015,all state players, four star national recruit,one of the best head coaches around,huummm? You are right ,no state ring,but its just a matter of time. Granted Gate City has won state 5 times since 1956, while Powell Valley won it 8 times, and Appalachia 6 times. Union girls made the finals in basketball and vollyball, while Gate CITY HAS WON BOTH SO MANY TIMES they should re-name the trophy "GATE CITY CUP".My comment "self sacrifice can only be understood by those by those who have served, does that make me better?no, but with a greater since of what it would be like not to have freedom and even the freedom of speech to say "big stone gap people need to get a job".There is no doubt that we all support and love our football programs,the text I shared was and still is a pun at the fact that Gate City takes all of the home side and half of what is normally considered the visitor side, and not the visitor section as one said.We love good teams at Union, lord knows we seen one at APPOMATTOX,we could learn alot at UNION and GATE CITY from them on how to host a game and how to treat the visitors. That community had lost a student in the early morning hours on game day, but they united and treated us like gold, they even honored our cheerleader who lost her mother in the next game. So yes , we all have a lot to learn about sportsmanship and what it is to be a great fan
