In todays world every student =$$$, and with that said all wise county schools and scott county would welcome any student that would transfer in ,it wouldn't matter if they played ball or not.Richlands has more than a few transfers but back in the day it was Gate City, along with exchange students for Powell Valley.Does that mean a local kid sits on the bench???yes it does but don't blame a transfer kid for working his nuts off and taking that spot. I am just awaiting the paperwork on the transfer of JALEN HURD from UT , TO Union , BECAUSE HE HAS HALF A YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL LEFT!!!! I am just wondering when NICK C starts getting kids to come to TAZWELL from Richlands if the opinion of some will change, after all TOM TURNER'S favorite saying was "POWELL VALLEY JUST BEAT US WITH A APPALACHIA KID**THOMAS JONES**)THE JONES DID MOVE LATER TO EAST 3RD NEAR BULLET PARK. I WAS TOLD THAT MIAMI COACH WOULD BE THERE TO LOOK AT MITCHELL (FOOTBALL) ,DABO SWEENY HAD MADE A TRIP TO MIDDLE TN A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, AND HE IS PUSHING HARD FOR MITCHELL ALSO, ON THE CLEMSON MESSAGE BOARD IT TALKS ABOUT DABO GOING TO SEVERAL TARGET SCHOOLS TO SEE HOW THEY PERFORM ON THE COURTS. WE MIGHT SEE TWO HIGH PROFILE COACHES IN THE HOUSE,AS FAR AS HOME COURT ADVANTAGE, I THINK UNION WILL PACK THE HOUSE TOO, SHOULD BE A GREAT GAME

Wtf, so let me get this right, a player can kneel during the National Anthem and that's ok????a kid responds to another's kids words, action, taunts and he gets tossed !!!!We all know that the VHSL has screwed up,I.E. Norton vs Riverheads,Lee High vs Union, so it's alright to cost a team a game by making the wrong call but when a ref makes a call that clearly was one sided the Whole fu@@@@@@ game, a outside source should make the unbiased decision . I am a Union fan and I believe that Richlands is being screwed over and I know Appomattox wants to play the best team that Richlands can field. The VHSL has always made calls that go against southwest va,from the central playoff sites( what a f-non joke) to the way monies are devided( eastern va gets more than SW va)

I liked it the way it used to be,east one year and west the next, with the teams involved hosting those games.It seems to me that the central va schools have it easier than the east and far west schools.When Powell Valley played at JMU for state we traveled 5 plus hours and the other school like 1 1/2 hours.YES we have went across the bay to play in a cow pasture too, but now with the Great venues available in all of va (UVA WISE,RICHLANDS,HONAKER,WISE CENTRAL,AND OTHE SITES with carpet I for one would love to see southwest va host.BULLET PARK has had numerous state games there and I long for the past.It seems to me that SALEM and other central sites gains revenue from our teams success, while our towns suffer from lack of dollars generated from these games.If both teams are from one region,(RICHLANDS,APPOMATTOX)why not play at the home field of either, both have great stadiums(appo needs more seats)just saying.There are no savings to the VHSL because two crews work the games,travel expences,and stadium cost, we try to save a doller and spend $10.00, the gates are smaller and the cost is higher

UNION is 55 and 19, not great but building a program,POWELL VALLEY had won 401-166-15 with 8 STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS,not bad for boys who played in the CAROLINA BLUE.APPALACHIA had 6 state titles and both of these teams beat GATE CITY one year when GATE CITY WON STATE IN THEIR CLASS.COACH MANCE is by far the dean of southwest va football right now ,but TRAVIS TURNER, and GRAHAMS,GILES,GALAX, coaches are all building programs that have and will continue to have great success, lucky us.I think the four teams still playing in AA are the best ones out there, UNION played two of the four , with APPOMATTOX being 3 or 4 steps in front of us at the skill positions.

APPO coach stated that UNION must have some STUDS to beat DAN RIVER, in a interview after their game with GILES.I think he is just trying to get into his own teams head because they wanted DAN RIVER so bad, a little revenge for that rainy night.The game will be won or lost at the line , no mistake about it. APPO will single cover our wide outs and put safety up top and everyone else in the box, they have done it before on strong running teams

I went to Dan River,they had speed too.their wide outs and backs were fast fast fast, didnt they win the state track 4x relay this past year?that alone tells you that Dan River is faster than APPOMATTOX.I also looked at VA PREPS, good name for them ...PREPS....,most of them seem to think we are playing the BRONCOS WITH Payton Manning, ....jeeezz.I am not going to sit here and tell you that UNION is going to beat APPO, havent seen APPO,except on HUDL, Iwill say this,if we control the line,and get to APPO QB, we will have a great chance to win. I look for APPO to play man coverage(double MITCHELL)and bring everyone on a run blitz every down except on 3rd and long.WE had a costly turnover at DAN RIVER, that they only got 3 points out of, APPO WILL NOT SETTLE FOR 3.ALL I have to say is FULL HOUSE FULL HOUSE FULL HOUSE, and i know TOM TURNER is smiling with a chew of tobacco in and that APPALACHIA hat cocked a little to the rear.HIT THEM IN THE MOUTH BOYS

Barry can be hired as a coach without effecting his VRS retirement,its called a contract employee.As a law enforcement officer we can retire and work as a cop as a contract employee, meaning that there is no retirement paid into VRS, and we have no benefits. Granted he may have a better deal in TN. but it can be done, question is,how bad does the BULLDOGS want to be STATE CHAMPS?ENOUGH to pay him or settle for an in-proven coach.GRAHAM has proved that they have a winner, and so does UNION.I have read somewhere that KEVIN SAUNDERS wants to come back????lord help us if he does, there will be a beast wearing BULLDOG green.

Union will have to run the full house to beat DR, they also will have to throw short and let someone make a play.I don't see them running the jet sweep much at all, DR. has good LB'S and corners , so the soft spot is 3 yards at a time.Keep their 'O' off the field and beat on them with our line.

BARRY JONES, former defencive coach at POWELL VALLEY during the championship years, now the coach at VOLUNTEER HIGH.He was POWELL VALLEY FOOTBALL,he coached the D and the line, it should be noted that old PHIL ROBBINS never won state without him.He also was at GATE CITY during their last STATE TITLE,he is just a supper nice guy and his players respond to him, he challenges them without degrading the kids, just super hard nosed without being a hard ass.THIS IS YOUR GUY IF,IF,IF YOU CAN GET HIM.

APPO IS NUMBER 1 , until someone proves otherwise, Graham, Richlands,Union and the rest of the west could win this thing, you only have to have 1 bad game and poof your gone ,wishing you would have done this or that.An injury could end a ,great teams run, JLA goes down, poof, QB for GRAHAM or UNION poof it might spell the end for either team....lots and lots of football to go, and yes I know there is plenty of talent on both teams but a NASCAR vehicle has 8 pistons and it only takes 1 going down to make the race end.I am not wanting that, hope everyone stays healthy but everyone is talking about SALEM ,and its waaaaaayy too early for that

Let's just hope the Bears that played Richlands shows up, and not the ones who played Lee. I did see some Dan River scouts ther at the Lee game, they left at halftime, they were not impressed at all with Unions line play

VHSL pays for hotels, travel expenses .Travis remembers the kids at Clarke county, no sleep out of schedule ect.As for the 6 pm time???? Don't know but I would think it gives the kids less time to overthink the game

Ihave watched these boards for years and every year Union kinda gets put in the "LUCKY" or "WILL GET YOU NEXT TIME".This year we have all talked about how good GRAHAM is, and they are, we also have talked about how RICHLANDS won the game against GRAHAM only because GRAHAM took its foot off the gas.I can see UNION competing with anyone because when RICHLANDS beat us in OT, we had a 10th grader in his second start at QB,and he is light years now from where he was.I will agree that GRAHAM has playmakers everywhere and that RICHLANDS has JLA and some great wideouts, I think UNION HAS THE BEST LINE,and Mitchell has proven he is a playmaker on both sides of the ball as well as kick returns. EVEN the coaching staffs seem even TRAVIS TURNER has proven he can do more with less for years,GRAHAMS coach is making a BEAST over there and MANCE...IS MANCE ,GREAT coach and loves his kids. I hope UNION gets to the 3rd round ,but first they have to play and beat LEE again and that's never easy, good luck to the WEST and I think ,whomever wins state will be from the west

I would take this game as a chance to work on the ground game,find you two good 2nd unit lineman and put tight end numbers on them, have your line go toe to toe with each other and go to the full house backfield and develop a running game,3 yrds and a cloud of astroturf.....you are going to need it

Union better be ready or Lee could turn things around on them.Gate City was beat pretty bad several years ago by Powell Valley,as was Clintwood,but come playoff time they both got the revenge "W",New season starts Friday and its win or go home, what you did before Friday doesnt matter. Someone will be a victim of a upset, Gate City has the best 5-5 team in the state by far, and it only takes one mistake sometimes for that upset to happen.
