  1. The Cats run their base O out of the 4 wide, singleback spread. They will also go to a 3 wide, 2RB formation. They also have a couple of power running formations, but they haven't run those much yet. Good luck tonight!
  2. Gate City George Wythe Giles Radford VHS Wise Lee Ridgeview Grayson County Graham Marion Narrows Hurley Twin Valley Chilhowie Castlewood Patrick Henry Holston Harlan Independent Michigan UVA Alabama LSU UCLA Union 38 VT 60
  3. As good as the offense will be this season, I think the defense will be far and away the most improved unit for the Cats. They are big, fast, and experienced on that side as well. People aren't used to seeing many good football teams from VHS. That has a chance to change this year. Cats win after withstanding Battle's emotional, fired-up start. Cats - 31 JSB - 10
  4. This game seems like it's going to be one of those "Ground and Pound" type, physical games. The home team gets the nod from me. GC - 27 Abingdon - 20
  5. This rivalry has started to feel like the games between Powell Valley, Appalachia, and Gate City back when I was in high school in the 90s. I have to give the nod to the Bears and their defense. It won't be another 1pt game, but should still make for another SWVA classic. With a 3pt lead, with Richlands driving for the game winner, Union's D scores on a turnover for a 10pt win. Union 24 Richlands 14
  6. 1. Union 2. Richlands 3. Bluefield 4. Graham 5. George Wythe 6. Giles 7. Marion 8. Abingdon 9. Va High 10. Fort Chiswell
  7. As it is any time that VHS goes up Battle Hill Drive for a ball game, the atmosphere will be electric. The VHS defense has size and speed(for once) and I think that unit will be the difference in the game. VHS 31 JSB 10
  8. Union Abingdon FC Blacksburg Central Richlands Tn High Ridgeview Alleghany Honaker Chilhowie Va High Bland Glenvar Narrows Hurley TV PH Northwood WG EM GsOTW; Graham 73 GW 49
  9. Having seen Union last week, they have a very strong front 7 on D, a couple of pretty good skills on O, a pretty good QB, and an elite talent in Mitchell. They have some questions in the secondary(excluding Mitchell) and along the O-Line. By questions, I mean the only real chance of them being exposed, would be against other top teams in the region. They will win tonight by a large margin. Union 48 Burton 6
  10. VHS had to deal with the youth issue last year. They have 17 players who either started or got significant playing time last year, returning. Most of which are Juniors. For once, Bristol actually has fairly high expectations for a sports program other than baseball. We've been looking forward to this season for a few years. So far, after dominating Sullivan East, and a pretty good showing at Union, the Cats seem poised to be possibly headed towards a more successful season than we've been used to. It's a struggle to get thru a season with a lot of youngsters but Tazewell's future seems to be pretty bright, if last year's middle school team is any indication of things to come.
  11. I'm right there with you. If Tazewell's middle school team last year is an indication of their future, they are going to be pretty good. They will take their lumps this year, as the current group of Bearcats have over the last 2 seasons. VHS 35-14
  12. Yeah, VHS was able to convert a few 3rd and longs through the air and were also able to put some pressure on Turner. With that said, the Cats had a really tough time running the ball, especially with their shifty little starter. The power back was able to grind out a few 4 or 5 yard runs but Union's D-Line won the battle upfront, most of the night. Union will definitely be fine come playoff time.
  13. Just got back from Big Stone. It was an entertaining and physical game. There were some pretty good battles in the 1st half between the starters. All around good game for both teams to see what each needs to work on.
  14. Yeah, that's my biggest question for them is how are they going to replace Delp. He was productive....yeah, Dakota was usually a man amongst boys when he was on the field. Too bad we didn't get to see him fully healthy for the whole season
  15. I put them on my list last week, for the same reasons as UVA. We were upset by Chilhowie at their place last year. My son knows a lot of those boys in their Junior class. They have some legit speed. Especially in the Sanchez kid.
  16. Just got back form the VHS-Sullivan East scrimmage. Each team's 1s played 2 quarters. VHS was up 17-0. The youngsters played the final 2 quarters. VHS 7-0 there.
  17. 1A. Union 1B. Richlands 3. Graham 4. Bluefield 5. Abingdon 6. George Wythe 7. Giles 8. Galax 9. Chilhowie 10. Va. High I know I may seem biased by being the only person to add the Bearcats, but let me explain why. As a former Bearcat myself, I understand the importance that Bristol has always placed on baseball. Football is mainly an afterthought in our town, and most schools in our region rarely fear our football teams like they do our baseball teams. There are a couple reasons that our community actually has high expectations for the team this year. This year's Junior class is one of the best groups of athletes that VHS has had in a single class, in a very long time. There are a number of kids in that class that have started multiple sports since their Freshman year, which is a rarity there. Dating back 3 years, as 8th graders, this team destroyed everyone in their path, including Gate City, and a 30 point win over an undefeated Richlands team at the end of the year. That NEVER happens in the same year in football at VHS. This same group that has seen significant playing time over the last 2 seasons, have become very battle tested, having to take their lumps against the strong Richlands, Gate City, Abingdon, and other teams. They have also had to start their playoffs against the defending State Champs in both years, at Glenvar, and at Appomattox. They have seen what it takes to be successful. Now, I don't have Grand Illusions of a State title, or anything of that nature, but getting to the playoffs and winning a game or two is considered a highly successful football season at VHS and I believe it is not out of the realm of possibility. We will surely find out this season, as our schedule has become significantly tougher by adding @ Union for the benefit game, adding @ Graham, and having to travel to Abingdon the very next week. We also added @ Wise Central, who should be improved from last year, as well as an improved Battle team. @ Marion, will definitely be no cakewalk either, and Chilhowie is in the same boat as us, with a talented group of Juniors, that I predict will be a force at the 1A level, should also be a tough game. Our yearly matchup with powerhouse Richlands has been moved from early season to Week 11. Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to explain that I'm not a complete Homer, but more of a realist.
  18. Va High is @ Sullivan East, Friday August 11th, unless the weather forecast stays rough for Friday. Then, it could be moved to Thursday the 10th
  19. That is true. Even though when the ADs hash out schedules, they usually try to alternate home and away with annual opponents, it's also not too terribly unusual to see a school having to travel to the same place 2 years in a row. VA High had to go to Lee in 2014 and 2015
  20. VA High players received their schedule today. Their copy says the game is at Richlands
