First round games tomorrow. What are y’all’s thoughts? Here’s mine:

Burton (Could be a toss up, giving adv to the team closer to home, and not too familiar with Marion)

Shelby Valley (Just a tough matchup for Chilhowie, SV is the real deal)

Ridgeview (Eastside will play them close)

    Lebanon (Easily)

I agree with those-if they come to pass it will give us some good day two matchups. Va High and Shelby Valley will be a must see

No way chilhowie is the best team in the region. Not even close. If anyone says a team other than ts or lebanon is the best they are lying to you.

Chilhowie has 4 wins over AA schools and their only loss is to a AAA school.

I've watched several games this year.  This team is out of shape and runs zero plays. He has one of the best freshman girls I've ever seen play.  I think someone said she is avg about 30 a game, but there are no set plays for her???  You have to be kidding me!

Imagine if she had a coach that knew how to use her!

RHS, this is truly the best replacement for Aaron Lowe?!?!?

I see Aaron Lowe made a new burner account 😂

Virginia High is the best team in far Southwest Virginia right now by a mile.  Anyone who says they are not really do not give them the respect they deserve.  They lost to a Tennessee High team by 5 I believe.  A Tennessee High team that pretty much destroyed Dobyns Bennett in Viking Hall. I believe they play Abingdon tonight.  If they play fast and go at the big guys, Ramsey and Osborne, they should easily beat the Falcons by 10-15 in my opinion.  Virginia High is way better than most want to believe in these parts.

    George Wythe dominated them

the talent he has had, numerous D1 players, one in the minor's,  0 state championships,   he should have a minimum of 1!!!!  prob 2!!!

LCA was an all star team

Do you hear yourself? Do you have any idea how hard it is to win a state title when it’s a winner take all game? Pure ignorance

Francisco has wasted a lot of talent and no state championships to show for that talent,

This is the basketball forum, but what a dumb statement.

”Wasted” = going to the state finals two out of the last three years.

Often schools dont provide them like they used to.    I dont know how hard they push for them either to be fair too.

I know of a lot of schools that just make them up lol. Nothing like seeing an article that says a kid averages 30 points and 14 rebounds a game or some craziness like that.

Better put narrows in there somewhere folks...Pruett is as good as it gets in swva imo

I ranked based on far SWVA region D-Wythe might be the best team in C and I’m sure Narrows is right there.

Wythe was dominant at Va High

Kingsport Times News used to publish a Top 20 for SWVa in high school basketball.
Would anyone like to give their opinion of a SWVa Top 20 for today?

    AA

    1. Virginia High

    2. Gate City

    3. Ridgeview

    4. Graham

    5. Union

    6. Central

Richlands should dominate girls basketball in the SWD and will make noise in the region. I think Wise-Central will be deeper which will cause them to win the region, and probably state.

However, Richlands has the best player on this side of the state. If you haven't seen the Trivett girl play just wait. She's a Freshman and in my opinion is the best player in SWVA (yes that's including McCamis from Wise). She'll be going to a D1 college no doubt.

She would have won SWD player of the year last year as an 8th grader. She's the best player I've seen on this side of the state in a very long time.

Not sure I would place her above McAmis just yet but I think ultimately you will be correct in that her ceiling is much higher

Lebanon and Honaker scrimmaged last night. Lebanon beat them handily. Honaker had no answer for Lebanon's big guy.

I wouldn’t say handily, but the Tigers did struggle with Leb’s size. Honaker shot much better in the second round against Abingdon-they will need to shoot well without Lowe to beat good teams.

The transfer ship sailed when LCA sued VHSL for inclusion. Very little VHSL can do to curtail transfers now. Punishing a "normal" high school for something clearly allowed by LCA or JM would open VHSL up to further litigation should a school choose to take that route, I would imagine.

Holding back has a lot more downside than people are willing to admit. Several scientific research studies have clearly concluded holding kids back has lasting harmful emotional effects and doesn't increase student achievement. One such study by John Pijanowski concluded "holdbacks were less likely to be enrolled in a postsecondary education program, received lower education/employment status ratings, were paid less per hour, and received poorer employment competence ratings at age 20 in comparison to on-time graduates.". Pijanowski was a Fulbright Scholar, played basketball at Brown University and has a PhD from Cornell.

I’m curious as to if this study had a breakdown between male/female.

Anecdotally, I would see holding back as being more detrimental to females since they typically mature faster.

Lebanon has more weapons IF Grundy's Right Tackle, Right Guard, Center, Left Tackle, Left Guard, and Tight End aren't considered weapons.

Weapons typically refer to skill players-someone with your extensive film work should probably have that terminology down by now.

Lebanon isn’t going to stop the run-that’s a given. They have a chance in a shootout because Grundy’s pass defense is suspect, but the field’s poor conditions will favor the running team. We were right there last week until Lowe got hurt. I can see why Leb feels like they have a shot, but the field makes it tough to run routes and make cuts which is what Leb’s best players do well

I think it could be another shoot out. Both offenses put up yardage, just in different ways. Lebanon has more athletes than Honaker so it would make sense to think they could move the ball like Honaker. Grundy size is impressive and will make it hard to stop their ground game. Look forward to seeing how this plays out.

Lebanon does have more weapons, but when the field is a mud bog it doesn’t matter. That field is truly an embarrassment and borderline unsafe between the poor lighting and the swamp like footing/rocks.

I think this one will be close. Honaker  had Grundy on the ropes, and had Lowe not got hurt who knows how that outcome would  have changed. I think Lebanon is finally figuring out how to win games. Their passing attack is going to be a tough out for Grundy to stop. Lebanon will have a difficult time stopping Grundys run game as well. This one could likely come down to which team makes less mistakes. Most of the season I probably would have picked Grundy, but I'm going with Lebanon, even if my brain says they will have to play a perfect game to do it.

    Lebanon 48

    Grundy 42

Grundy going to win this one
