    GC 8

    Union 7

GC must be ready to play, because their coaches apparently feel so prepared that they have time to message me with threats on here.

For those that had week 5 on the under for GC drama to fire up, congratulations and you can collect your winnings at the Hob-Nob during regular business hours. For the rest of us, I'm going to the concession stand, how's everyone like their hot dogs, and let me know if I you want regular or diet pop.

  2. 1. Bluefield

    2. Pulaski

    3. Ridgeview

    4. Chilhowie

    5. Union

    6. Abingdon

    7. VA High

    8.Mount View

    9. Galax

    10. Grundy

IMO, although I am not a true believer in transitive properties, I'm going to need to see Bluefield really beat Richlands pretty badly to hold onto the number one spot. I think Pulaski would be the only team that could matchup speed wise with them though and Ridgeview COULD NOT win at Mitchell, bottom line. Play it on the Ridge, and there's a chance but his name is Slim.

field conditions  was the REAL reason... but the VHSL's "official" reason was a 'safety concern'... we didn't have visitors side seating yet.

That rings a bell as I had a lot of family in administration at GHS at that time. I'm not sure why as it had hosted many Grundy/Hurley, Grundy/Richlands games with no issue. That one will always stick in my craw. Niether field was really suitable for play, but it had to go on.

  4. Holy smokes. That's a logistical nightmare from an admin and officiating standpoint. It will be a very soggy game if this forecast holds up. The only good news is it will be on turf, but even with the amount of rain forecasted, I'm not sure how well it will drain. I'm not an expert on anything though.

When I look at this forecast, the only game I can recall that was like this was the 1996 AA semifinal with Grundy v Salem at Tazewell. Game was moved to Tazewell on Thursday IIRC due to field conditions at Grundy. Admittedly, that field was gone by that time of year, but Tazewell was in the exact same shape. Effin Salem, insert eye roll.

St. Charles Mighty Midgets.  You can't make that kind of a thing up.

Does it bother you that bad that I didn't put Buefield in my top ten?

If  I had included them they would not be #1.

How could you rank Ridgeview ahead of Chilhowie?

Didn't Chilhowie #1s handle the dumpster dogs  #1s pretty well in the benefit game?

Can you at least give a reason why you think they are not the best team in the coverage area?

I'm a fan of neither Chilhowie or RV but, handling is what happened to Lee High at the Stone Castle. From all accounts, the 1's played each other fairly close in that "game".

I don't understand why you don't even put Bluefield in your top 10, let alone number 1.  But I hadn't called you out on it because you're entitled to your own opinion.  But now I will, since you deem to call me out for being a Burton hater.

So, where in the hell even is St. Charles, Va. anyway?  Sounds almost as remote as Rowe, Drill and Putnam are.

It is. The only thing I know about St.Charles is a tale I heard that back before consolidation they were known as the Midgets. Well, guess what the elementary had on their jerseys....The Little Midgets. I find it very hard to believe but, if I am not messing it up, I got that on good account.

Also, if anyone doesn't think Bluefield is the legit #1 around here right now, I have the number to a few doctors that can examine your eyes, head, sanity....

I get that his or her lack of acknowledging this at this point is more than likely out of spite, but is that the hill you want to die on? It's only week 2.

He's the freshman running back that's scored several TDs in the benefit games and scored what seemed like every touch in middle school last year for Tazewell.  Reminds me a bunch of Caleb Jennings he's not the biggest kid but his speed is seriously special. He wears number 3 varsity he was back deep on kick offs versus Virginia High.

    Who?

Problem with Cuz's is never know how long will have to wait to get a seat if they are busy.  Plus every time I ever went there the service sometimes is very long.

Good note above though, King Kone some of the best hot dogs anywhere around.  Love that place as well.  Plus might as well throw in Red Flower for Chinese.  Hands down best Chinese anywhere around that I know of.

Eat at the bar if you can. There's usually always an open seat, and unless you order a big entrée, most time the food is out in 10-15 minutes. If you go in a group of 4 or more, of course it will take longer, just like anywhere else you eat though.  Just my experience but I've been going for 30 years so I know a hack or two about the place. I have heard others say similar things that you said. I've had busy service sometimes, but nothing I'd consider slow except on drinks where they have food runners.

    Amen to Red Flower though.

There is only one place you need to go: The Bearded Moose.

You will not regret that decision one bit. Just get there a little early, it can be busy on game night.

    NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND!

I will concede no one will ever have regrets about eating at the Moose, however Cuz's is D1 stuff. You can enjoy an adult beverage before the game there, and my second and third points are cheesed egg rolls and cheesed egg rolls.

Jimbo cries that Union's players play dirty and sends in goons to try and do damage in the second half.  Doesn't matter.

    Union 45, Burton absolutely nothing.

Jimbo does love to whine. IDK if he has enough bodies left to send in the goons though.

    Union 38, JIB 0

Union could score more, but as someone noted above, I look for them to get the bulk of their points on big plays, and running sustained, clock burning drives.

  11. I have them only beating TV in district and dropping Tazewell, Pike Central, and MAYBE East Mont.. Church has been there for a long time so I do not expect him to be changing much in the system they've had success with. I don't think you're prediction could be far off either with three games on the road to start though. I think if they can get through that first 3 game stretch 2-1 that they will be a playoff team.

Maybe as an alternate or something. All I have ever known was the Notre Dame-eque look though, even down to the hash marks in the end zone. I know I am not alone in wanting them to go to the Wave man as their primary logo and ditch this Tulane ripoff logo. They've never had a gold jersey I have liked (my first memory of a gold jersey was that Amherst game, insert frowny face), but I have always liked blue jerseys on gold pants at home, and white on blue or white on white on the road.

  13. I hate it for the kids. One would think that the PV kids would be allowed to play somewhere adjacent since the school isn't sponsoring a squad similar to how Garden and Whitewood would join up when WW wouldn't have enough kids out. However, they think of things a little differently on things up there I have learned. Another thing I took away was that MP might not have a team either. It was my understanding and assumption they had a pretty healthy population at that school, but without seeing the numbers in front of me I could not be sure. We are definitely in a different era if teams in NOVA are worrying about numbers.

I believe it is Thomas Walker instead of Twin Springs that will be at Central.

This would make sense as Nick Johnson (TW) played with Luke Owens(WC) at Grundy under Plymal who was the OC and now HC. Also, if I count correctly, I think Grundy has the most alumni currently in HC positions in the area, but I could be wrong. The 3 listed above, Church at Hurley, and Ward at Twin Valley. Does any other school have more?

  15. Twin Valley v Northwood in a matchup of the purple panthers at 10 AM on August 11.

Also, it's my understanding Twin Springs will be at home versus Hancock County, TN on Friday August 10 at 6:00 so I'm not sure if they'll be at Central as stated above. I could be wrong but, this is the info I received last week.
