I hate going over there too, just because it's always a clown show. The officiating and the silly rules to try and stack the deck against out of state teams makes it not worth it. I'd rather play Eastside or Rye Cove. You would get basically same power points and not deal with that mess.

This will be my 1st trip over there... Just stories am here this is some crazy stuff...😲😲

Just my opinion as a Richlands fan.  There is a rule concerning artificial noise once huddle is broke. I’m pretty sure that rule was probably broken.  However. It is home field advantage.  I like it.  I like the environment.  The atmosphere was great. The game was great till mid way through the fourth.  We came out on the loosing end .  The noise probably was tough to deal with. It was supposed to be.  That was the point. Kids will remember the atmosphere.  Remember the noise. Remember trying to concentrate and carry out their assignments in an adverse environment.  That is why we all love the game and the lessons that carry on in real life.   Didn’t cause us to loose.  Caused us to be uncomfortable. And that is why there is a home / away series between most teams. I hope Richlands gets it together and gets to play union again .  That was a good game for most part.  Highly competitive for over 3/4 of the game.

Just like this guy said...GREAT GAME last night...The Union side was just LOUD and PROUD of how the team responded in the 2nd half...

Mance will adjust he always does and gets #200. But you know it will come down to the final play with one fan base leaving pissed off heart broken and headed to the gas station to pick up the 30 rack of their choice

I hope the good people from Richlands has some designated drivers...thats long road home if people are drinking...safe travels..😲🤔😆

Heritage is NOT included in the Timesland poll! Jefferson Forest and Liberty-Bedford ARE included but are the cutoff points/schools east of Roanoke. I work in Charlotte and I am very familiar with Vance.

Good luck to Union this year ... except when they travel to Bluefield.  😉

    GRAHAM G-MEN 2018 STATE CHAMPS!

Yea my son played 5 years ( Spring league football) in Charlotte ... 3 of the years was with a coach that worked and his son played for Vance....His son is now a Soph. LB at Missouri.

Thanks on the good luck...Yea could be a long night in Bluefield**

  5. Am not sure if Heritage High school is in the Roanoke times top 10 picking area...

I did see were they played Vance High school from Charlotte NC and lost 35-7...That's a very TOUGH week one opponent (Nothing to hang head about)

Vance has a good shot to win state in 4AA this year...

  6. Bearcat Dad....(I was at the game) The 1st half was pretty competitive (nothing to be ashamed of)...the 2nd half was a lot of none starters and UNION keep the ground and pound going...The game over all was pretty good

I’m not in the same business as your Union friends in calling kids a “joke”, but yes, this will be a very long year for the Bearcats for a few reasons. Now calling certain coaches a joke, I’m all for that!

I no longer have a horse in the race in SWVA football, other than just being a lifelong football fan. If I could change my name from Bearcat Dad, I would, as that moniker is no longer true. My kids are now collegiate athletes.

I will always be a VHS fan, but I am a realist. This board is littered with my posts from the last few years, with both positive and negative outlooks on VHS sports. I’m far from perfect on my predictions, but I am right more than I’m wrong.

VHS will finish between 0-10 and 3-7 this year for a few reasons, which are......

    1) They have a great group of assistant coaches, that are handcuffed by a head coach who is secretly an egomaniac. He says all the right “Coachspeak” to the media and whatnot, but does not practice what he preaches.

    2) The numbers are BAD again for VHS. So much so, that this year, they don’t have a JV team, because they need those bodies to dress out on Friday nights.

    3) I love and cheer for those VHS boys, but the fact of the matter is, is that the Jimmies and Joes are just not there to have a successful season this year. They have a few athletes, most of which are very young and very inexperienced in Varsity football. They could potentially be pretty strong in two years.

    4) This infusion of youth is in part because, in my opinion, their 3 top returning players are not there. Two because of injury, and one because of a young man’s decision to focus on baseball.

I believe that your prediction, @Counts, is very possible. There is a very big talent gap between VHS and most of the teams on their schedule this year.

    Ryan,

I will have to 2nd that...a lot of people are talking about Richlands coming to town already!!!

Big Stone & Appalachia is one of the modern-day ( Towns of Friday Night Lights ) ITS ALL ABOUT THE LOVE FOR FOOTBALL!!!

It was one of the reasons why I moved my son back there is to play FOOTBALL.

Union has so much potential, and Union is so young. Both of those showed tonight. Let this team Gel, Let it all come together and nobody will want to see them come November.

Union was a mixed bag. Starting center didn't play tonight so that got the line out of whack a little.

Players were rotating in and out constantly, so difficult to see any rhythm.

The RBs and LBs will be fine. Lots of new faces everywhere else. The one drive that they didn't really rotate was very successful with punishing runs, and ended in a TD. Flashes of good and flashes of bad on O and D. Maybe next week will reveal more.

Lot of promising talent in the JV ranks.

Not much to report other than this scrimmage reminded me a lot of 2014 vs Tenn High. Went 8-2 that year and got better as the season went along. Hoping for the same this year.

    Question to the UNION fans...

How did the LB's look on defense tonight?

I feel bad I could not make it there tonight😞

GC’s Little League program is in far worse shape than the varsity. Unfortunately it is illegal in Scott County for high school coaches to physically go to the elementary schools & put on a little presentation that might accidentally increase participation. There’s just nothing we can do. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Wow...That's crazy, hopefully kids has younger brother's coming up though the grades that can help the coach pass the word around. And hopefully find some little league coaches that buying in to what he's trying to build on...

  10. I can't say I know alot about Gate City... But It might take a couple of years... But with the coach they have now..He will start laying a good foundation for the kids there and he'll talk it up in the classrooms also, then kids will start to see the good things he's doing and football numbers will start to go up!!

    Just my thoughts on it....
