I understand why they are upset with the timing of it. But I was definitely not quick to jump to conclusions.
It didn’t make sense to me that they would cancel the parade over a football game. The parade would last 30 minutes and they would have plenty of time.
The Veterans Day parade was scheduled for Saturday in Big Stone at 11. Because the game was moved to Saturday the town of Big Stone canceled the Veterans Day parade. A lot of people are understandably upset.
Ridgeview people getting defensive. I wasn’t at the game. I was watching some Tennessee schools.
I’m certain that Union wasn’t perfect. I don’t think I saw anyone defending any bad behavior from Union players when it occurred. Looks like most people commenting wanted to know where the flag was against Ridgeview for some of the things they did.
Also some parents for Ridgeview are upset that their kid got called out. I don’t think the players should be suspended or anything. Running laps and pushups should be appropriate consequences. And maybe a good stern talking to from administrators.
Yeah they’re kids and are prone to get hotheaded in the moment. But the truth is that Ridgeview athletes and fans have been involved in quite a few kerfuffles the last few years. The adults in charge need to teach them about conducting themselves and also be an example. And if their behavior continues to reflect poorly on their team and school community then that’s when consequences should happen.
Ridgeview seems to have a great tradition going on. They are also getting a bad reputation and that’s going to have to be addressed.
I'm sure common names like Frye, Carlock, Ragsdale, Cummins, Turner, Robbins are there, but some to not be missed that many may forget are
Merle Gainer of the Bluefield Beavers, (my argument as Numero Uno, the Dean of HS football in the Appalachians, the Michaelangelo as far as I'm concerned and if you look at the coaching true that sprang from him and the success that the guys under him had not just locally, but in multiple states, he's my pick for number 1), but others like Chmara, Fred Simon, Joel Hicks of Pulaski, Lineburg of Radford were all solid, don't forget about Dave Ryder of Tazewell, Greg Mance of Richlands.
Most Unpopular historically, but the best On Field Tactical X's and O's guy to come out of the coverage area in my opinion. Dennis Vaught. He saw things on the field that 99.9 percent of his peers didn't see, His in game and mid game adjustments were foolishly good. But, things like smart decisions off the field, temper, leadership prevents him from being viewed in the elite and that's fair, but on the field wise, on a completely other level. Just my opinions
Gainer also coached at Patrick Henry in Roanoke. The 1973 PH Patriots shut out 10 opponents. The only team to score more than 7 on them was William Fleming.
They even beat Coach Herman Boone’s TC Williams. That was couple of seasons after the 1971 Titans season.
My parents and a few of my relatives moved from Big Stone to Fort Walton Beach, Florida. There’s 2 high schools there: Choctawhatchee (aka Choctaw) and Fort Walton Beach. Fort Walton Beach mascot is the Vikings. The football stadium is named Steve Riggs Football Stadium.
Speaking of turnovers, the pass to huff should’ve been ruled incomplete, rather than a fumble.
that’s just from my eyes at the scoreboard end zone anyways. I never thought he had sole possession of the ball
Based solely on what people have said about Union's special teams play, I'll go with no. Even the team with a senior James Mitchell was undone by special teams play against Appomattox as it cost them 17 points in a 3 (IIRC) point loss.
Don’t forget 2012 against Stuarts Draft. How many onside or squibs did Stuarts Draft recover?
