  1. how odd would it be for martinsville to win out and get the top seed in the playoffs...then in doing so play bassett in the last game of the season and the first game of the playoffs...just like a year ago only this time both games would be at martinsville. it's certainly a possibility if the dogs can keep getting it done on the field (and especially if bhs can knock of fleming along their way). oh and hopefully both games would be played in a little warmer temperature than those two last year!!!
  2. that's what i posted over on preps...but there's actually a flaw in that logic. if they lose all 3 (which they probably won't, but let's just assume)...all 3 of those losses will be against division 4 teams with at least 5 victories...which = points even if they lose. so abingdon may be in trouble all the way around unless they win their district. wins over teams like battle and ph-glade spring and losses against teams like honaker will certainly not help the falcons towards getting into the playoffs in this year or any other. obviously the piedmont teams have learned that in this small region we have now, they key is to schedule above average teams. for one it makes you better, but also it works towards getting you to the postseason.
  3. sambo...your google skills are suspect indeed (only messing with you of course)...all things bassett football related can be found at bassettbengalfootball.com. i didn't realize mv's jayvees were struggling that much. i think bassett's jayvees aren't doing much better....and as for the replacement for taylor...that's the million dollar question lately. i even had someone ask me that at the race today. i haven't heard a thing yet.
  4. i swiped this excerpt from the bassett website regarding their jv team's most recent game. one of the most odd stats you'll ever see is contained within Game Six Away vs. Patrick County Result: Lost 44 - 0 The Bengals played Patrick County on the road Thursday and might have been better suited to stay on the bus. Patrick County beat the young Bengals in every area of the game and trounced the Bengals 44 – 0. Patrick County on-side kicked 6 times on the evening and received 5 of them. The Bengals will need to get things back on track for this week’s match up with cross-county rival Magna Vista. The Bengals play at Magna Vista on Thursday 10/26/06 at 6:00 p.m.. RECORD: 2-4
  5. i saw ya moving the chains down there...and then again briefly at wendy's if i'm not mistaken. both teams should easily make the playoffs though so that return game may definitely be a possibility
  6. yea i was telling someone sitting nearby me that in the approximately 17-18 games or so the dogs and warriors have played in the history of the rivalry (including playoff games)....the visiting team had won close to 80% of those games. the dogs have several good sophs and juniors on the squad, but they'll lose a lot for next year...so i wouldn't chalk up that first home victory in the series for the dogs just yet.
  7. big win....34-6 bulldogs on the road at magna vista
  8. [ QUOTE ] The MHS fans were waiting for it to be brought back to where he went down but the refs obviously missed it and called it a touchdown. Tough break! [/ QUOTE ] that had to be one of the most blatant missed calls i've ever seen...even in a high school game. their opening score was the only 'legitimate' score and the dogs gave up a 50+ yard kickoff return to put the eagles in position for that one. lots of injuries for mhs in the game. one of the dogs best defensive players (as well as fullback) missed basically the entire 2nd half...hopefully none were serious enough to miss anymore game action. the bulldogs still need to keep improving on offense.
  9. martinsville got jobbed on their own home field and couldn't hold on to a 20-7 lead in a 27-20 loss to franklin county.
  10. halifax got out of martinsville with an 18-15 win. the comets came out quick in the spread for a 7-0 lead and i thought it was gonna be a long night for the dogs. martinsville's defense tightened up most of the rest of the way. the offense sputtered most of the night though. the dogs had the lead in the 4th quarter only to let it slip away...they were about to have one last chance to get the ball and decent field position, but got whistled for a roughing the kicker penalty that put the game on ice. halifax is d5 and now is 4-0. so i guess the positive side is that the dogs will get plenty of points from playing halifax....anyhow, next up is aaa (d6) franklin county and then gretna....both should be tough games, but in the friendly confines of dan greene stadium.
  11. i don't really disagree with ya except for the 5-5 possiblity. 7-3 sounds closer to right.....magna vista and bassett picked up big wins last night. as well as a good win for patrick county.
  12. dogs won 23-7 over rustburg....the red devils scored their only td with less than a minute remaining.
  13. the new video interview with coach edwards is up on www.thedogs06.com. he discusses the graham game for a bit and answers a few other questions about this coming week's game versus the red devils.....and oh man does the field looks great!
  14. nice CPF......like john anderson sings..."i wish i coulda been there"
  15. give me a little preview of what i can expect to see from the dogs when i get to see them for the first time this year on friday night....how many times did they pass the ball? were they successful with that at all? which players impressed ya? i heard about graham's turnovers...did the dogs turn it over much? just whatever you can remember will suffice.
  16. i found a website... www.thedogs06.com ... there's some stuff on mhs's football team here...but the title of this post refers to the very last couple of seconds of the 5 1/2 minute interview with coach edwards that's found on this website. click on the camera to view the interview... :-)
  17. thanks bulldog95 (if you graduated in 95...then u and i went to school together...barely) i just automatically assumed he confused us with magna vista since they do (or they did with their old coach) run the wing t. mhs, besides experimenting with some spread is more likely to run from the i...and in years when they've had the multiple options in the backfield have been known to even line up in the wishbone.....and by the way, the tall receiver did indeed graduate. he scored 19 or so points in the game of his life in the state title game this past march.
  18. the wing t? ya sure you're not confusing martinsville with magna vista on that one?
  19. [ QUOTE ] Without a doubt, Martinsville is very talented and a darn good team. Any team that can play with Salem (even in a scrimmage) is a top notch team. Just wondering, in your opinion, what makes this a better quality team for Martinsville than last season? I know they started out slow last year with the change in offense...are they still running that offense or have they gone back to what used to get the job done? Also, knowing that this is Coach Edwards last season, will that motivate the kids any??? [/ QUOTE ] let's see if i can try to answer some of those...first off, what some people may have forgotten is that mhs played salem tough in last year's scrimmage too...and we see how that turned out. (the first losing season in 28 years!!!) so while it's encouraging that they played salem so well at salem, it's still too early to tell. in my opinion i think they're are better team than last year b/c they finally have some kids that SHOULD be able to hold their own better in the trenches. the way i saw last year's ghs/mhs game, it was won and lost on the lines...by the second half it looked like men against boys. next - by the end of last year they had thankfully pretty much scrapped that spread offense crud they were experimenting with. the great thing that came of that though was that they started running the ball again, but had the ability to keep teams honest by passing it with some success. lastly, i do believe the last year for edwards, and maybe more importantly the last year for several seniors who have been multi-year starters, should be a big motivating factor. the talent is there for sure...i think they'll just have to start believing that they can win with regularity again.
  20. [ QUOTE ] So bring 200 or 2,000 lets enjoy a great night of football. [/ QUOTE ] that's more like it...and thanks gman. good luck to both teams and go dogs!
  21. leave your guns at home?!? what a thing to say on a high school sports forum. whether you were just joking or not, that kind of comment is just plain uncalled for...your classless true colors are shining through. kind of ironic you speak of guns and have a picture of joey porter as your avatar. anyhow, back on topic...packed with graham fans you say??? as i remember from last year, graham didn't bring a bad crowd considering the road trip. however, i'd guess their crowd to be in the range of 500-600 at the very most (which i'd also guess is maybe half or just over half of the visitor's side capacity). you guys have a team you should be proud of for sure, but sometimes you've just gotta put the kool-aid down and come back to reality with the rest of us! as for mavahi...i'd be inclined to say you'll be lucky to see more than 200-250 mhs fans make that trip. mhs fans tend to be fair-weathered...and until the dogs get back on the winning ways, it'll be hard to get people to drive that far for a game...sad maybe, but pretty much true.
  22. about what i expected. good to see the news was true about jd tyree deciding not to move to georgia. looks like some decent depth on both lines...one name i'm surprised not to see is soph rb eric carter. i'm gonna assume he's gonna play jayvee again this year with several juniors and seniors in the backfield already on the varsity roster. all i can say is good luck to the other piedmont jayvee teams...they couldn't stop him last year either. wished i could make it to bluefield this friday night. i've always heard great things about the atmosphere at mitchell.
  23. Bulldogs poised for postseason run By MATT BECKER Bulletin Sports Editor Martinsville's football team might be lacking in some areas this year, but one area in which it is not lacking is experience. Most of that experience will be found on the Bulldogs' offensive line this year, starting with DeMario Martin, a four-year starter at left tackle. He will be joined on the line by Joe Ray and Grant Martin, both senior guards, J.D. Tyree, a junior tight end and returning junior center, John Fitzgibbons. "We feel like our offensive line could be our strength this year," Coach Taylor Edwards said. "They're bigger and more athletic than in years past." The line will have a familiar face lining up under center this year in senior quarterback Tracy Hairston. Lining up with Hairston in the backfield will be Victor "Snook" Hairston, a senior running back. Edwards is hoping his running back will step up and be a team leader, not just on offense. Snook, who rushed for more than 1,200 yards last season, is looking to continue his successful running this season, but knows that winning trumps any individual accomplishments. "I'm just going to come out here and lead by example," he said. "Individual achievements mean something. It's more important to make the playoffs, but individual goals are good, too. Edwards is confident in his team's running abilities, but admits the Dawgs still have some questions when it comes to throwing the ball. "We're coming off a scrimmage (against William Campbell) and looked pretty good running the ball, but not as good throwing it. And you've got to be able to do both if you're going to be successful." Helping out with the passing game will be receivers Freddie Riley (senior), Tyre Joyce (senior) and Chris Scott (sophomore). Martinsville has a healthy combination of size, speed and experience on the defensive side of the ball this year. Tyree and Martin will platoon with Ashmand Hughes (senior), Adam Clint, John Ray and Ronwyn Pritchett on the D-line. The Bulldogs will sport two seniors -- Courtney Martin and Steve Fuller -- and one junior -- Marquis Eggleston -- at linebacker this season. And the two Hairstons will be joined by Darion Dunbar (senior) and Quamaine Giles (junior) in the secondary. The Bulldogs will have a handful of players playing both ways this season. Tyree and Martin on the defensive line and the Hairstons at the safety positions are the most notable. Edwards knows the danger of playing his quarterback at safety, but he also knows the importance of doing so. "You always worry about an injury with football," he said. "But if we're going to be successful, we've got to have Tracy in the secondary." Edwards and the Bulldogs know what they have to do to be successful, but Edwards is also well aware of what they can't do if they expect to win. "We can't think that we don't have to work to be good." he said. "We can't just rely on our athleticism; we have to work every day. We also have to realize that one win or loss doesn't make our season."
  24. certainly wasn't meant as an excuse. just trying to say that the g-men are the early favorites. i'm sure they'll get the bulldogs' best effort...and that's all one can ask for. go dogs!
