Vaught took the PH-Roanoke job in ‘89 and was off to a good start (I think they were 5-2 or thereabouts) but then resigned or got fired after making some racial statements to his team during a game they had been playing poorly in.
He joined the Tazewell staff as an assistant in 1990 and had a big hand in that team going 6-4 and making the playoffs. The Dogs weren’t expected to win more than a couple games that year but almost upset Graham in the playoffs when the G-Men were unbeaten and defending state champs.
It was said that Vaught was brought to Tazewell as a “coach in waiting” for Richlands that year because Billy Haun was on his way out in 1990. A lot of Tazewell people were pissed, saying Richlands got their best coach.
Graham’s JV ends season without being scored on with 16-0 win over Richlands ; would be undefeated but tied 0-0 with James Monroe. Future looks bright for GMen! Congratulations to JV players & coaches.
If I’m not mistaken, the middle school GMen only lost to Bluefield.
middle school did lose to Bluefield, was 3rd game played in 7 days
I would like to give a shout-out to the GW concessions. Hotdogs were some of the best I've had at a HS game.
A big thumbs down to the mile long walk to the visitor's bleachers. Geez! I think I had a shorter walk to Dollywood from parking lot F.
Overall, GW looked pretty good. Not as good as last year, but definitely have some talent on that team. With all they graduated, I was expecting the dropoff to be greater.
Not sure how to rate Northside as I have no point of reference, but felt that Union matched up with them very well and our O line, out of the T, dominated.
We also have a stable of running backs. At least 6 got carries tonight, and all looked great.
Weeks 3 and 4 will decide if the Bears are contenders or pretenders this year.
I think there are multiple fan entrances, so was probably a shorter way.

Gonna be 48 degrees up there at kickoff and drop to about 39 by halftime. I hope NFHS Network works well and is on its game tonight, because I'm saving my Mitchell Stadium trip for Ridgeview vs Bluefield. I'm gonna hit Double Gates Grocery and the hotdogs hard for that Ridgeview game. I start with 5 dogs, then get 5 more to go for the parking lot at the game. My wife eats 3 and she's only a buck ten.
Just finished watching Graham vs. Gate City. It appeared that in varsity action Graham out-scored Gate City 2 td's to 0. In JV, Gate City outscored Graham 1 TD to 0.
Graham's defense is definitely ahead of the offense. Gate City managed a few gainers, but more often then not, they were stopped in the backfield and the QB was whistled down a lot on the passing plays (They wouldn't let the QB's get hit). Gate City's JV moved the ball well against Graham's JV. Clements scored 2 long TD's for Graham. It looked like Isabelle got quite a few carries in the scrimmage. I couldn't tell who was on the D-Line for Graham, they were wearing different #'s then what I am used to. Roberts was good, when he was in (didn't play him a bunch), I guess they are trying to get others ready. # 64 looked good and # 11 also # 23 played well on the D - Line. # 69 must be the kid from Texas, he got a good push on the line when he was in there. He will be good to come in on 3rd and short or just to spell some of the others. Clements only carried the ball 3 or 4 times and had the 2 td's. Like everybody else, they are a work in progress. The passing game did not look good for Graham, they need to work on that big time.
I heard George Wythe offered to play Monday night of next week. What? GW planning on practicing Saturday & Sunday. I guess they wanted to appear cooperative since they’re getting blasted on here and probably by some of their own folks I would imagine. Graham plays Bluefield Friday. I’m no coach but I wouldn’t play GW Monday after offering to play Saturday when I have to prepare for Bluefield. You want your boys to play every game possible but not two games the week you play Bluefield. I’m like you, once contract is fulfilled, find another team. 💯 %, done!
Graham already had a JV game scheduled for Monday also.
