I would have to give the edge to Salem with them playing at home. Winner of the Salem/Bassett game will probably face defending state champs Amherst who seem to have another powerhouse team this year.

Bassett's JV won-4 lost-5 and tied-1.

I guess a lot depends on the players you have and what are you strengths and weaknesses. Martinsville's new coach has the Dogs running a double wing offense this year.

Merging Fieldale-Collinsville into Bassett caused their enrollment to go from about 700 to over 1200 which also put a lot more talent in their football program.

I think Appalachian State made history by being the 1st 1AA school to beat a top ten Div.1A school. I guess the case could be made for claiming to be the biggest upset in NCAA football history.

Gretna 41 Martinsville 0 - Looks like a long season for the Bulldogs.

Bassett put on a show at home this past weekend by beating Carroll Co. 41 to 6. Partick Henry will be a tougher test plus they open in their brand new stadium which means they will play the Bengals extremely hard. The Patriots will be hungry to win the 1st game in their new stadium. I give PH the edge and I predict PH-24 Bassett-21.

I believe Carroll Co. will rebound and win this one by a TD. Is Bassett that good or is Carroll supposed to be having a down year this time around. I was surprised by Bassett winning 41 to 6.

Sometimes I think Amherst should be playing in the Western Valley Dist. with GW Danville, EC Glass etc.. IMO they belong in Div.5 AAA and not Div.4 AA

With home-field advantage Bassett should come out the victor possibly by 2 touchdowns. Bassett has good size and depth so Carroll Co. would have to put on a show to win or the Bengals would have to self destruct.

Coach Curia had a death in his family that must have been pretty devastating. The Martinsville Bulletin had an article on the coaching change and reporter Drew Eary quoted intermin coach Moran:- "Moran said that filling in for Curia is a way to help out in his absence. “I was unsure what would happen,†Moran said. “But there was a very unfortunate death in his (Curia’s) family, and afterward he thought he would be able to continue as head coach, but I guess he decided he could not. I said I would do anything to help out in his absence, and now I am just doing what I can to help out.â€Â

Some coaches count JV along with the varsity players and some don't which probably explains the 81 players verses 33 players for Graham.

Bassett does have a good site. One of the best HS sites I've seen is GW Danville www.gwfootball.com it even has a message board. Check it out.

I think the Bengals should be favored in the Piedmont Dist. this season. Dan River moved to the Dogwood and Martinsville gets a new coach and drops to Div.3 AA. Looking at the schedules I think Magna Vista has the toughest as they continue to play powerhouse Reidsville. I've also heard that Carlise is starting a football team.

I was a little surprised that Martinsville didn't get someone already associated with the Bulldog program like Scheib or Bobby Dalton. Matt Foutz sounds like he will be great for the program with his experience. I wonder if there is any relation with Dan Foutz of the San Diego Chargers? Fat chance huh? As a former Bulldog I wish Matt Foutz the best and hope he continues and even improves the MHS tradition.

It seems the hound dog has been keeping up with politics.

Martinsville Bulletin website is reporting final score Amherst-61 Bassett-21. That adds up to over 20 points a quarter.

Today is the big day at Bassett. The weather has turned off sunny and the wind has died down with the temps in the 50's it will perfect for football. Bassett's field should be in good shape even with yesterday's rain. I predict Amherst will win 35 to 21.
