  1. Staunton is a team to keep an eye on. The Leemen are very athletic. Match-up this week with Turner Ashby will tell just as much about this group as the season finale against Harrisonburg. Region III is still a toss-up. Hidden Valley still looks like the team to beat. However, the Brookville Bees could be a stumbling block assuming that they qualify for the playoffs. Liberty's still a question mark. Team hasn't really had a chance to gel for a number of reasons. Minutemen could make a run once the playoffs begin (similar to 2002), but I wouldn't bet on it.
  2. [ QUOTE ] this was not intended to carroll county. it was to people like u. who brag about richlands and all they have done this year. [/ QUOTE ] "People like u." That's very funny. How big is that broad brush? Does it require more than one person to carry it?
  3. I humbly suggest that this thread is inappropriately titled. If the intended subject matter is Carroll County, the appropriate question is, "Did anyone really care to begin with???"
  4. [ QUOTE ] mike stevens is a cave spring graduate and hates salem. [/ QUOTE ] Mike's from Staunton, where he graduated from Robert E. Lee. Don't know about the "hates salem" part, but I find that highly unlikely.
  5. [ QUOTE ] I live in Charlotte now and I've seen Big I play 3 times. They are not as good as they have been but they are still the best around. Vance had a chance to beat them but they went for 2 and didn't get it and lost 21-20. Providence blew their game also. Butler has a big time tailback 6'3 250 that has already signed with UNC. This should be a very good game and if you guys want to see a good game then you should come to Charlotte on NOV.3 [/ QUOTE ] Admittedly, I haven't kept up with Charlotte area football much since I left. But what's the deal with the coaching situation at Big I? I thought Tommy Knotts left to join the staff at Duke a couple years ago. Did they just force out the guy who replaced him when he decided to come back?
  6. [ QUOTE ] I posted that on back on the 27th - need to keep up with things better. [/ QUOTE ] You posted that on September 27th? Here? Just curious, because going back and searching your posts, I didn't find it. EDIT: Actually, I visited your web site just now and saw the reference. Poked around there and read a lot of other interesting things, such as the fact that the SWD is 50 years old this year. Great site, VHSL!
  7. From the looks of things, my former home boys at Vance appear to be struggling this year. Probably lost a few guys en route from the mobile classrooms to the locker room to the field. Or it could be the fact that they dress out in those danged UVa colors.
  8. Why does this thread remind me of the following comic so much?
  9. [ QUOTE ] Richlands would beat them.... [/ QUOTE ] *LOL* Have to give credit where credit is due. Incisive, well-timed.... Excellent post all around, Beaverteeth.
  10. [ QUOTE ] What about the other 17 years? [/ QUOTE ] What about them? The purpose of my post (assuming I had one) was to demonstrate how pointless lines of argument such as these really are. Will it really make either of us feel any better or worse right now if we know that our school will win or lose the next 738 meetings in a row?
  11. Unless they try something creative (like playing blindfolded), you can pretty chalk up win #100. East Meck? Fuhgeddaboutit. Was down there a couple of weeks ago when Providence almost knocked them off. Of course we can hypothesize about the value of "almost."
  12. [ QUOTE ] how many times has graham beat richlands?more than richlands has beat graham that a fact not fantasy. [/ QUOTE ] Hmmm....my high school class ('89, thank you very much) went 3-1 against Graham. Fact, not fantasy. And has about as much to do with anything as..... well, anything else.
  13. [ QUOTE ] replying to post of ghs84 sorry for confusion [/ QUOTE ] No problem, amigo. Anybody want to talk about the way Salem guarantees success on an annual basis by recruiting the best players from all over the Roanoke Valley? Because I sure don't.
  14. [ QUOTE ] it would be very competetive game. rhs comes out on top. You all say that nobody can beat salem from the swd anytime you all are crazy. when richlands and salem played in the semis in 2003 there was only two plays that kept that game from being ours. an interception attempt right before the half and an onside kick that we should have had. thats it. if we would have went in at the half with the lead we win i believe. but its over now. go blue [/ QUOTE ] I may be splitting hairs here, but I would hope that I am not included in the "you all" by virtue of the fact that you responded directly to my post. Statements to the effect that no team from the SWD could ever beat Salem are obviously nonsensical, and I didn't even see the need to validate them with a response.
  15. If he'd change his last name to Groh, he'd probably get a lot more PT. Or be named to the coaching staff. Either way, I'm sure it's all part of Al's plan.....
  16. [ QUOTE ] I would not believe it unless i seen it.salem is awesome every year period.no team from the swd would beat salem last year, this year or the next 5 years. [/ QUOTE ] I wouldn't give any kinds of odds on a Richlands-Salem matchup other than to opine that it would be an incredible game. It is correct to say that the Spartans are fully stocked every single year. And that isn't a coincidence by a long shot.
  17. Let's switch gears here just a bit. Richlands vs. North Korea. Who does everyone like? I say the Blues win by at least 3 TDs, NK's nuclear capabilities notwithstanding.
  18. This one, most definitely: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rh9P-1wb4E&mode=related&search=
  19. Can a revival of "The White Shadow" be very far behind?
  20. [ QUOTE ] Ole Pete offers his take on the battle of the bluegrass bands. Shelby Jewell and the Bluegrass Kinsman versus the Grundy Grass Quartet. Kentucky versus Virginia, pickin and a grinnin. From Chicken in the Bread Pan to Bill Young Mountain Breakdown, Shelby and Ebby Jewell will be singing your favorites competing against the harmonizing quartet of Greg Rowe, Jack Compton, Craig Plymal, and Bull Blevins. Ole Pete's pick: Grundy Grass by a encore! [/ QUOTE ] Gotta rise to the defense of my kin folk (or in-laws, as the case may be). That Grundy quartet couldn't carry Ebby's....mandolin case.
  21. I don't have a really good feel for Liberty's chances this year. This year's squad just doesn't have the same chemistry as last year's team. The Minutemen certainly _could_ host Richlands in the state semifinal. But I don't really expect them to make it that far. The Seminole District is absolutely stacked this year, and the rest of the region is pretty competitive as well. If I had to wager a guess right now at this very minute, I'd say that the Blues will be playing Hidden Valley in the state semifinal game. Obviously, I'd love to be wrong about that one.
  22. [ QUOTE ] I think Craig Plymal or Greg Mance will be the next head coach at abingdon, or both of them. [/ QUOTE ] Does Dennis Vaught still live in Abingdon?
  23. [ QUOTE ] he was actually cussing us for no reason bein a deusche [/ QUOTE ] Are you inferring that he was swearing in German? One would think that would actually impress the locals. Wait a second. That would actually be deutsche, wouldn't it? Never mind....
  24. [ QUOTE ] um, yeah. yelling is a requirement. Abingdon is like a different world from the rest of swva. [/ QUOTE ] You probably could've stopped after "world." That town has issues, to say the least.
  25. That is huge news. Can the resurrection of the "Wild Bill" Gatton persona be very far behind?
