  1. [ QUOTE ] Vick Boys, Brooks -NO Saints and Alan Iverson all from Warwick High School [/ QUOTE ] Iverson went to Bethel. You're closer on Brooks. He actually graduated from Ferguson (which was closed in 1996 and the kids were then transferred to Warwick). I can't imagine that the original poster meant to infer that Richlands is the best team in the state spanning every classification. Then again, I can't speak for that poster.
  2. [ QUOTE ] I'll say this to the Blues!! Dont get your heads in the clouds... Believe in yourselves.. Dont get caught up in reading newspapers when you should be in the weight room. Your attitude should be of a hunter hunting! Dont be caught off guard by a team being a hunter. Take care of business. Dont let a team hang around again like Carroll did!! Bad things can happen.. In the playoffs one bad night, a miscommunication or laps in mental.. Can send you home... Season over... Best of Luck... Go gettem.. [/ QUOTE ] Great post. Richlands has a great team, but the Blues need to keep taking things one game at a time. Questions about who's best and who's overrated will be answered at the end of the season.
  3. That's way cool. Congrats to the Ramblin' Goats and their alumni everywhere.
  4. [ QUOTE ] what about Jeff "spider" Hurst....he was a force in the paint...they way he threw around his 6'3 120lbs....I can't believe a Div.1 college didn't take him out of high school. [/ QUOTE ] He said the last 20 years. By now, Jeff Hurst has to be 80 years old if he's a day.
  5. Dr. Samuel Johnson: Olson Johnson is right. What kind of people are we anyhow? I say we stay and fight it out! Howard Johnson: Dr. Samuel Johnson's right about Olson Johnson being right. And I'm not giving up my ice cream parlor, that I built with these two hands, for nothing or nobody. Sam Johnson: Howard Johnson is right! Van Johnson: Right! Howard Johnson: Thank you, Van. Hoping that I'm not the only "Blazing Saddles" fan here. Otherwise, this post is for naught.
  6. [ QUOTE ] You people kill me. He was mentioned. Page 3. By Lance, of all people. Go figure. [/ QUOTE ] D'oh! Can't believe I missed that. Apologies (and kudos) to Lance.
  7. I am shocked --- SHOCKED, I say --- that Terry Smith hasn't been mentioned in this thread. After all, he is the single greatest coach in the history of organized football.
  8. I could be mistaken, but I don't believe that a game in Virginia can end in a tie. You basically keep playing overtimes until someone comes out on top.
  9. Personally, I'm only going to worry about the national championship game if the Hokies finish the season undefeated. That hasn't happpened yet, and there's certainly no guarantee that it will. My advice to other Tech fans is to just enjoy the ride. It's enough of a pleasure just to watch this team this year.
  10. [ QUOTE ] or it could be a good team. [/ QUOTE ] Nah, I don't think that's it at all.
  11. I'm thinking that the iffy performance Friday night was my fault. I've only been able to see Richlands play two games the last two seasons, and they squeaked out 7-6 victories in both. Then again, it could just as easily be my dad's fault.
  12. [ QUOTE ] I think you guys have more team speed this year, but you'll see all the power and speed you can handle if you get to meet up with Liberty Bedford...never know though, someone might get lucky and knock them off for you I think they are the only team that can give you a run before state... [/ QUOTE ] The Region III champ, regardless of whom it is, will give Richlands fits. Liberty, Hidden Valley, and Christiansburg are all quicker than any other team Richlands will face up to that point. And if the Blues play the way they did Friday, things might get ugly. I'm not convinced that Liberty is the team that will ultimately win Region III because the Minutemen have a bad habit of choking in the playoffs. But I do think that Liberty would've hung 30 points on Richlands the way the Blues played Friday. Pass defense in particular is something that Mance needs to work on. Richlands gave up way too many big plays against Carroll County. A faster team would've made RHS pay dearly. McCracken isn't going to be able to stand flat-footed in the pocket, either. I'm hoping that Friday was just something that Richlands needed to get out of their system, but there is much to be concerned about heading into the playoffs....
  13. Not a ChiSox fan, but as one who reveres the game and its history, my hat is off to them. May Shoeless Joe's good name be restored and there be no references to Black Sox ever again. And may the Dodgers have sense enough to hire Hershiser and get rid of DePodesta. That way maybe we'll be talking about an LA sweep this time next year. (fingers crossed)
  14. [ QUOTE ] The game is based upon the movie The Warriors, the movie was made in 1979 in NYC. It's about the biggest gang in the city called "The Riffs" calling a truce to all gangs in the city and having a meeting with 9 members of each gang. The leader of "The Riggs" gets shot at this meeting and another gang blames "The Warriors" for the shooting. Now, the truce is off and "The Warriors" have to make it all the way back home to Coney Island from the Bronx, with every gang in the city looking to get them. The game actually picks up before the movie and shows how all the warriors become a gang, once you make through several levels, it follows the movie pretty closely. Go rent the movie or buy the new dvd out this month. Just keep in mind, the movie was made in 1979, so there is really no gun violence like you would see in today's gang movies....they just use baseball bats, bottles, wooden planks, switch blades and their fists.......... Check it out [/ QUOTE ] 'Fess up, 89er. There is no such movie or game. You're just describing life in the 'hoods of Roanoke circa 1979.
  15. [ QUOTE ] If I'm not mistaken, Stinespring was Coach Vaught's assistant in the late eighties when he won a state championship at Lexington High School. [/ QUOTE ] Yep, Stinespring got his start with Vaught at Lexington. He did follow him to PH-Roanoke. After Dennis had trouble in Roanoke, Stinespring landed at Tech as a graduate assistant. The rest is history. Funny that mention of the connection between the two appears in Tech's media guides prior to 1992, but not thereafter.
  16. [ QUOTE ] Koolaid, maybe you can answer this question. I know Billy Hite decides which back is on the field, and when, but does Stiney call the play he wants without regard to who's in there? For instance, did he really think a 5'6" tailback could leap over from the one? I love Imoh but he's a situational guy, and that wasn't his situation. As for Stiney, he has good games and bad ones. I still think he's in over his head a little. [/ QUOTE ] You do know who gave Stinespring his start in coaching, don't you? A certain Mr. Vaught.
  17. We have our own very similar and very heartwarming example in Southwest Virginia. Every winter, OFISHE8 is allowed to dress up in black and white stripes and pretend that he is a basketball official.
  18. [ QUOTE ] ofishe8, what kind of crap are you smokin. he was NEVER photographed by any paper before his accident. he WAS cited for intoxicated in public as well as failure to control a vehicle or whatever, both misdeneanors. he crashed on 58 east between danville and martinsville and left the scene. he had his wife drive him back to get his car but a state trooper was waiting for him. henry county school super. fired him from his coaching job but he kept his job as earth sciences teacher at M.V. [/ QUOTE ] Jokes? Sure, norseman gets jokes.
  19. [ QUOTE ] but the number of kids are decreasing in richlands just as much as other schools. Richlands stands at 800 some kids. That is a decrease in 200 some kids from last year. [/ QUOTE ] Enrollment at Richlands is declining, but I think there's a typo in your post. For purposes of benchmarking, RHS had about 1300 students in all four grades when my sister graduated in 1983. When I graduated (1989) we were down to about 1100. Enrollment has been fairly constant in the 800's for the last half dozen years or so.
  20. [ QUOTE ] Are you willing to give up the "history" and "identity" of Graham, Tazewell, and Richlands High Schools in favor of this proposal??? Please feel free to add your thoughts and comments...I have mine and will post them later... [/ QUOTE ] In terms of radical ideas, I'll go further than that. How much longer can/will Cedar Bluff function as a separate town? They ought to merge with Richlands and just be done with it.
  21. [ QUOTE ] The plan is for two. One on each end of the county. "TC East" and "TC West" I guess. Who knows if that actually happens though. [/ QUOTE ] I haven't given this a lot of thought, but... When it does happen, I think the western school should be named Pounding Mill High School and the sports teams would be called the Quarriers. They could use the logo from the old USFL Pittsburgh Maulers: except the main colors would be black and red instead. Whaddyathink?
  22. [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Looks like the longstanding relationship between Richlands, Tazewell, and Graham definitely does have a shelf life, which is a shame. [/ QUOTE ] I think that relationship will continue...only it will be a "non-district" relationship more than likely... [/ QUOTE ] I'm sure that you are correct. Still sad that we won't be in the same district together. I stand to be corrected, but I believe these three schools have been grouped together for as long as Virginia has had organized competition.
  23. I am boldly going out on a limb and predicting that Open will not score against the Mighty Blues.
  24. [ QUOTE ] The big loser is Richlands who will be forced to play in the highlands, but at least they get the district title for the forseeable future. [/ QUOTE ] The Tazewell County School Board could redraw the attendance zone lines to equalize the numbers between Richlands and the rest of the county a bit. But that would be a short-term fix at best, and would be something that constantly had to be maintained and revisited. Looks like the longstanding relationship between Richlands, Tazewell, and Graham definitely does have a shelf life, which is a shame.
  25. Liberty (Bedford) beat Staunton River 40-7 last night. Losing Zach Webb was a bad thing, but overall the Minutemen don't appear to be missing a beat. They probably won't beat Amherst, and there's no guarantee that they'll win Region III. But if they do, they'll be plenty of competition for the Region IV champ in Division 3.
