Auburn broke GW. They haven’t been the same the past couple of weeks.

Not to take anything away from Honaker. Great win.

Auburn pulls away from Chilhowie, wins by 22

I watched the 4th qtr of GW and Honaker.  GW with just several literally wide open 3 point shots and the ball just rims out.  It happens.  Teams go cold and 8 minutes is a short quarter, only 32 minutes in a HS basketball game.  With that written, got to credit Honaker for scoring more points than GW.  GW is very good defensively and Honaker put up over 60.  Honaker deserved to win.  It wasn't a fluke

Agree with both of these statements.

    Congrats Honaker!

Just read the write up about Danielle Sanders in the Roanoke Times.  14 blocks?  Who in the heck blocks 14 shots in one basketball game?  For the love of God, all Bland County opponents, STOP shooting the basketball in the paint when she's around.  After 3 or 4......or 7.....or maybe 10 blocks......the picture should be kind of clear.  The NBA record for most blocks in one game is 17.  14 blocked shots is way, way beyond the norm.  It would be in the realm of scoring like 75 points in a basketball game.  It's actually that rare.

Man, she keeps that thing ready like a pissed off fella chasing a fly in his living room with a fly swatter too lol!

Our girls played them the night before she went off for the triple double against Grayson, and I asked some Bland coworkers about her the next morning. That's when I found out she was Stiltner's granddaughter. I was not surprised at all that she did what she did that night. We definitely reminisced about some of those Bland teams you had mentioned as well. The one I distinctly remember was the Patrick Smith lead team that fell short in the regionals. I believe Lebanon clipped them in the Regional semis that held them back from a GW/Bland matchup in the final. Lebanon went on to win a state championship that year with Scott Allen setting a state tourney record for assists. If Bland and Rocky Gap were consolidated at the time, I have no doubt they would have been capable of winning a state title that year. Truth be told, Bland was capable even without Rocky Gap in 90/91. They were right on par with Lebanon, GW, and Cumberland, who were the clear top 3 teams that season.

Pretty sure that same bunch also went to the state tourney in 89/90 as well, but I could be mistaken.

Correct. Pipestem beat Auburn Baptist Christian Academy, not Auburn High. Auburn returned everyone on a team that lost a nailbiter to rival GW in the semi's and had mltiple close battles with GW like always. It's no surprise that Auburn beat GW. They will play again probably 3 more times this year.

Not the outcome we wanted, but expected a tight game. Both teams know each other very well after last season.

Man, Auburn just seldom misses at the line....Or at least sure feels like that's the case lol

Spoke to a Harlan County parent sitting beside me just now.

This is their 7th game in the last 10 days. Crazy.

@gwloyal are you here? Would love to say hello to you.

Unfortunately, I'm watching from home or I absolutely would.

And I feel their pain lol! Today was our 6th in 10 days, and that Mentor game last night should count for two 😂 We looked like we were wearing it a little bit in the early going. Noah is the truth, but it sure did feel to me like Carter was the difference today...He was a tough matchup for us today, for sure.

Y’all got yours a quarter too early lol.

do you know if you guys play anywhere close to BSG this year? I’d like to see this squad up close.

G-Dub plays us at Virginia High sometime later this year. May be a bit too far for you though. Lol

I actually haven't seen where we were playing back down that way after this week, but that certainly doesn't mean we aren't lol! I'll be on the lookout for it.

The rest of the schedule I have has us playing at home or east the rest of the way. Some home games of interest are Roanoke Catholic (1/12), Dobyns-Bennett (1/20), Auburn (2/2), and Narrows (2/3).

That’s exactly what it seemed like. GW expected a shot from either at the line or a 15 footer and we’re not expecting them to try to get to the bucket. It’s risky but it paid off for them. You guys should still be insanely optimistic going forward, damn near made the semis in the winners bracket beating two much more regarded teams. Go beat Harlan and keep going.

Thanks man, and we sure are. Gained a ton of confidence last week in Gatlinburg and the experience this week has brought us as been priceless.

I have a feeling home games are gonna get a lot more crowded lol

I mean, they kinda just stood there lol. Also, most end of game plays that are successful end with the person who gets the ball first taking the shot. I’m a firm believer in forcing a pass, that takes up time and creates more chaos. It’s easy to say from my couch but I’d rather force him to give it up than to build up a head of steam and get an easy look.

I get it. All I can figure is that we were overly anticipating contending, but not fouling, a pull up.

Rainey nearly nearly got a piece of that layup it appears, as well. So close man.

I’ve always wondered something. How has gw remained in class 1 when there’s a population of ~8,000 in wytheville. Some counties barely have that amount in our area and still have schools in the county that are class 2. Always seemed odd to me

We've always had a fair amount of folks who move here after retiring.

US Census has us at 8,177 as of July 1, 2022. 25.3% are 65 or older. Only 19.5% are Under 18.

That 19.5% averages out to about 89 kids a year, and not all of those kids will be enrolled at GW. Some of them have Wytheville addresses but are closer to RR or FC so will go there. Some are homeschooled. Some enroll in one of two small private Christian academies here.

Went to see Carroll County and Honaker Monday night in Hillsville. Carroll isn't quite as good as they have been recently but Alyssa Ervin sure is. She had 43 points, 11 rebounds and 7 steals in the 60-56 win for the Cavs.

Didn't realize she was still there. I have a friend from Hillsville that keeps me in the loop with the Cavs, but he hadn't mentioned girls hoops lately....Been too occupied with the Greer hire lol

    She's a straight up baller.

    Against Dorman?  Ha!

They will have a fighter's chance in the 6th place bracket, however if they're playing a northeast Tennessee school, the refs will probably give benefit of the doubt calls to the Tennessee school.  Just ask Twin Springs fans that these last couple of years.

If we have a fighting chance in the 6th place bracket, I'll be thrilled lol

how do you think they will do in the Arby's??

I can’t see us having much against Dorman, but I’d love to be wrong.

We are also in the Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic in Gatlinburg and wrapped up our first round game a little while ago. 84-69 win over Pineville, KY

Galax doesn't always win the state championship. But when it does, the score is 7-6.

Galax only wins State championships by that score on the same days Riverheads loses a state championship.
