  1. you're right... I was thinking about Volunteer. I'd still rather go 19 thru Kingsport, though.
  2. I guess I should help out the North-bounders, too. Take Exit 98. At the bottom of the ramp, turn left onto the 4-lane. The swath through the median is kinda small, and, if I remember correctly, is slanted, so don't floor it. Also, you'll need to be in the left lane about 1/4 mile up the road, so go ahead and camp out there. The road curves left and goes uphill, so beware of the traffic light after you go under the bridge. Then go about 100 yards and turn left at the next light.
  3. Rogersville is where... don't know when. School is on the 4-lane on the right.
  4. So you don't get confused, Rt. 100 is Exit 98 (NRV Airport) ... BK was a fav. quick stop for me when I was at RU. The ramp lane ends quickly, then becomes the BK turn lane with a traffic light. The next light is only, what, 100 yards up, so you gotta get over to the left pretty fast. Traffic coming from your left will be travelling up an incline while you're staying pretty much level.
  5. John Harris signed with Winston-Salem State
  6. Doesn't surprise me. Wait... yeah, it does, that it's taken this long. Newspapers generally aren't available until a few hours after an event ends. Why should they post the story online at. say, 5:30 pm. ? Now they've pushed it to where it's real-time. They don't pay for the rights fror this. Radio & TV does. I surprised others haven't done this. Some states already have rules against blogging at state HS c'ship events, unless they pay the same "live" fee that traditional broadcast media does. Just waiting for the VHSL to do this. Twink did wrestling for a few years b4 he moved up north. Newport News Daily Press blogged their locals this year without advance prep. Their guy PM'd me the day b4 to find out who to get up with when he got there.
  7. I'm sorry, 500K? If they can get anyone to talk for them for 500K, say goodbye to Mitchell. WJHL had a story about half an hour ago. The Science Hill AD and band boosters are pushing to build a new stadium in Johnson City to replace Memorial Stadium / Steve Spurrier Field. Partly because it's old and starting to show it's age and partly because it's a couple of miles from the school. The story implied the cost for a replacement is around $5 million. Want about something more, um, "concrete?" I checked my records. A couple of new 3,000 seaters have opened in SW VA over the past couple of years. Roanoke's new stadium at PH opened in '07 and cost $4.1 mil. (that incudes just over 500k for the art. turf). Blacksburg's new stadium that opened out on Prices Fork last year cost $3.5 mil.
  8. the BDT says 5:00. The memo at Richlands says the Blues start at 5:30... maybe they don't play first.
  9. I've put together a huge list of pre-season match-ups... http://www.angelfire.com/va/vhsl/090814.html
  10. first time I heard was 10 am, but now I'm going with 3:00
  11. BBQ looked scrappy to me. Thak goodness for the sauce sprays & great slaw. The O looked quite good. Anyone know why the cheerleaders were in 5 different uniforms?
  12. The only thing I know is that Richlands will play the 4 non-SWD teams starting at 5:30 on Fri. the 14th. Then I'm assuming Graham will do the same thing, and the other 4 will play 2 of the other 3 (none of them play in the reg. season, so I can't guess at the pairings). Also assuming each "contest" will be a shorty - like 1 quarter or 25 off. plays or 3 off. series.
  13. To put on the wall. Don't need the start times, but want all 115 (or so) teams, not just one conf. If anyone finds one in any of the pre-season mag/books, let me know which one, since I quit buyin'em years ago. Not interested in a $10 one from those sidewalk vendors when school starts back. If it's a freebie/giveaway, odds are that I'm nowhere near the store doing it (unless it's Advance), so if you can get an extra, I'd appreciate it. Reply below, in case others might want to know where to find one, then I'll PM ya.
  14. right. The NCAA doesn't use 1-A and 1-AA anymore. All those guys are (and always were) D-1 guys. And "1-AA is not the same thing"? I think more that a few Wolverines would tell you different.
  15. You know, since Covington is a city, I'm surprised that it isn't Alleghany County... hadn't thought about that before. Actually, their IS an exception... Grayson County. They have another school that's not in a city AND is a VHSL member.
  16. no... 4 years ... 0-40. That allowed Gretna to keep their record of 44 straight losses.
  17. GC_Quincy The Div. split is done at the Region level. Their numbers put them in the bottom-half of Region B. The first year we had this (1986), it was done at the state level. But because so many small schools were this side of Roanoke and around the coast, Region B only had THREE small schools that year. Manassas Park got in on a bye, and Brentsville District (4-5-1) beat 0-10 George Mason by a point in the first round. Since a lot of fuss was raised, the new system went into effect in 1987. Rule 68.8.3 (the "Rye Cove Rule") was passed in the Spring of 2004 and took effect in the Fall of 2005. By that time, Rye's numbers had fallen enough to put them in Div. 1 outright. The only schools in the state that were eligible to use it were Pound & Thomas Walker. Two Div. 1 schools were also "eligible" to drop. Here's what I posted... "I wonder if Pocahontas could play King & Queen for the Division 0 title? " ------- deuces BHS & RGHS started a combined footbal team in the early 90's & came up with a new name & nickname for the team, then combined all sports around 2002. ------ Beamerball Yeah, the RE Lee ppl. were (and may still be) a bit snooty about how THEIR school was Lee. I had a, ummm, "conversation" with one of them about that on VP about 3 seasons ago. He got on the state scoreboard and said Lee won XX-YY. I replied, "No, Lee LOST xx-yy." He was all, like, you know, WE'RE Lee, and I don't know who your school was named after, but ours was (something something about Robert E.). I said something like "it's too bad they don't teach y'all state history up there. "Ours" was named for "Light Horse Harry", a former Governor. Look him up. Who's your daddy?" (The gov. was Robert E.'s dad) (And, yes, I've called them Lee County. on the radio many a night. Never felt right just saying Lee, and Lee High makes 'em sound like some Ivy League school.) If I rem. correctly, the school was supposed to be called Lee County High, but the Ewing ppl. wouldn't let Walker close. So after it was publicized as "County", it didn't turn out that way. ------ And everyone's forgetting another County high - Pulaski.
  18. Council played from 1992- 95. Coaches were Todd Newberry ('92) and Roger Deel.
  19. I don't know who's 92.3 to the north, but down around Wytheville I sometimes get interference from NC's K-92, WKRR in Asheboro.
  20. "Big Money"? Yep... definitely. Swords Creek native Heath Miller has signed a 6-year extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers. A late first-round pick in 2005, Miller's 1st contract was for $6.89 million over five years, plus a $3.95 million signing bonus. Yesterday evening, Miiller agreed to a six-year, $35.3 million deal that includes a $12.5 million signing bonus, which will keep him in black & gold thru the 2014 season. Miller caught 48 passes for 514 yards and three touchdowns last season. Heath and his teammates report to training camp at St. Vincent College tomorrow with the 1st practice scheduled for 3 pm Saturday. The Steelers will be in Charlotte to take on the Panthers to wrap up the pre-season on Thursday, Sept. 3rd @ 8 PM. Tickets start at $38 and will go on sale Sat. morning at 10 am. NOTE - "Sales to this event will be restricted to residents of North and South Carolina. Residency will be based on credit card billing address. " ...So get someone down there to order them for you or go and pay cash.
  21. goes from 1.8 to 3.8 Mil per season, plus a $12.5 million signing bonus http://www.steelersdepot.com/blog/2009/07/steelers-sign-heath-miller-to-new-6-year-contract/ http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4365087
  22. Has the TCSB made it official yet? "how can he transfer to Tazewell while his father BLATANTLY proclaims in the BDT article that the reason for the "transfer" is to PLAY BASEBALL?" Because he's not started 9th grade yet.
