For your info, I'm probably old enough to be your grandfather.  I graduated in Richlands in 72, UK in 76, and have attended high school football games for over 50yrs.  How long have you been a fan? Oh, by the way, explain to me what you viewed wrong with what I posted.

OK.....so you are old enough to buy beer....just too old and feeble to lift the mug from the bar!

Very good game, great atmosphere, good sportsmanship on both sides, good and true fans on both sides.  This game was as good as it gets, like watching a state final, not a 1 vs 8 by any means.  Go easy on the transfers.  Richlands has been going to state finals and semi-finals for a long time and the players who transfer do so to increase their chances of being seen on the highest level.  Nothing illegal about that, and it Mance and company or Union, or anyone else for that matter is doing anything wrong, the I'm sure the heads of state at VHSL would be on their back right away.  Richlands had one player who transferred to Bluefield and played quarterback, his father was a basketball coach at Richlands, so don't get your panties in a wad about the transfers, everyone does it.

This final game of Richlands season should have proved that Mance and company can play with anyone even in a down year. So watch your words, the future will eat you up when your team plays Richlands.  Hats off to Union, they did what they had to do to win a very tough and hard fought game, wish them well the rest of their season, and know that we will meet again in the not so far off future.

Sounds like someone on here isn't old enough to buy beer yet.

You don't become your schools winningest coach, have the most wins in an entire zip code over the span of 17 years, make it to 5 state titles, beat both of your rivals like Cherokee drum's for a decade and not be a good coach. He's not a poor coach. I'm still yet to figure out why you have so much distain for him when for nearly two decades, he ran an entire 1/4 of a state.

Turner, Wells & Dixon are the 3 I would put right under him. But until any of them show the longevity that he has (and Thad won't because he'll be in college before too long), then they aren't quite on his level.

I will concede wins at Richlands (like to see his record vs. teams with a winning record), which zip code, 24641 - I will concede he has more high school wins in Richlands, made it to 5 finals and had better teams than 4 of the 5 opponents, easy on the Native dialogue there pal - Tazewell has been a hell of a team in the last 17 years (no disrespect Bulldogs), didn't say he was poor - I would describe him as average, stop trying to figure me out, you won't from where you see things. Some of the reasons are:- he is still making some of the same mistakes he made when he started.  He seems very reluctant to adapt when needed, his play calling is very predictable and I would bet my last dollar that he has a sub-par record against good coaches or teams with winning records.

Turner has beaten Mance more than Mance has beaten Turner.  Dixon has at least as many state titles as Mance in many fewer years as does Wells (but Blacksburg isn't in SWVA)  And all of these coaches are much younger than Mance, make that statement in ten years and you will be laughed at.  I would say they are all at his level, probably higher.

Richlands offensive play calls allowed pocket passer quarter back to out rush a great running back.  Richlands qb a lot more mobile than last year.  Graham should be undefeated this year, Richlands defensive play calls and execution  vs Grahams offensive play calls, lead to Blues  holding shifty Meade in check, and lead to Cousins being out rushed by JLA7 .

Same play callers on all sides.

    Candy Gram for Mongo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ronnie Davis and Blues Defense held Cousin,s who is / was a great running back , to less rushing yards than JLA 7 last year ?  . Mance called 2 quarters of 2 different games perfectly to overcome deficit.  Think Palmer’s done a great job, and Graham is talented and has a great team , but think Mance is playing chess, and Graham isn’t gonna reinvent the wheel?

Mance and Blues win the Coin Toss, they take the rock matriculate it down the field , chew the clock and Graham’s on the business end of 7-0, A ten year, 12 game losing streak..... 80 % mental, I remember the nuclear implosion Graham had at Richlands 2 years ago, and the two melt downs last year....

Richlands has one stat that I thought was poignant and will prove to be pivotal tomorrow night

Haven't done much matriculating down the field this year and Mance doesn't chew the clock.  If the G-Men get a chance to hang 40 points or more, they will.

Update: Byrd fans on VA Preps claim he walked out of practice Monday after a dispute with a coach

Maybe I'm a softie, but given what is at stake for him personally and for his teammates, I hope they exercise some mercy and give him another chance -- if the situation calls for it

That is the problem with today's society.  If this is true, the young man made a decision and needs to held accountable for it.  Regardless of the effect.  It seems adversity is an unwanted teacher today.  Very Sad.

Was he the RB on the 94 team that lost to Blacksburg in the playoffs?  I remember Narrows being in the Grid-O-Rama at Mitchell that year and beating Tazewell 6-0 and getting ran the hell over by Richlands and it pretty much being the one RB that was an absolute horse.

That was the year.  I remember the Narrows scrimmage.......McCommons was a Junior...the team had an abundance of senior leadership that had been around Coach Vaught.

  9. I refuse to believe that one year of good coaching and playing against better competition (deep playoff competition) really improves a players stock. I just don't see it. If you're a stud then you're a stud, plain and simple.

I completely understand moving to a school with a better program, but it needs to be done before high school. Once you make a commitment, own it.

    Well said.

  10. You would be irked, sure. But if they truly felt they had a better shot at a ring or a scholarship to ANY college -- Wise, JMU, Tech, wherever -- then that's his choice. I'm not gonna get pissed at a 14-18 year old like that. I refuse to go to that level.

Choosing "me" over your teammates or peers, is not cool.  Adversity teaches many lessons, can't learn them if you bail on people.  Football isn't the only way to get a football scholarship.  You are going to college, are you on a football scholarship?  Society is going to hell in a hand basket because of the lessons kids are learning now.  I am a parent, and I will tell you that I would rather suffer on my son winless seasons than watch him sacrifice his integrity.  For my son, I will not allow it  There are bigger things in life than "wins."  I wouldn't get pissed at 14-18 year old kids either, more so at adults that endorse this type of thinking.

Exactly what age do you think "kids" should be held accountable?  This issue is not so much about football.

  11. If a kid wants to transfer from Richlands to go anywhere, then that's his decision. Not my place to be upset. They are, after all, 14-18 year old kids.

Mmmmm.  What if Richlands was reeling from multiple losing seasons and their two best players or just their best player decided to transfer to Tazewell or Graham.  I already know what your reply will be.......However, some need to try on others' shoes.  Imagine that this past season Richlands had received no transfers and John-Luke and Scottie Ball decided to go to Graham.....to win state.

If you are a Richlands fan and say that you would be alright with that.......you are flat lying.

  12. I'm a democrat. Therefor I'm more liberal than conservative. And I can promise you 100% that my moral values are rock solid.

And get politics out of sports.

Well Ryan....I'm sorry.....I'm sorry again........I will tell you that liberal values and conservative values are not the same.

I agree.....tell that to the ultra liberal NBA and NFL.....and Hollywood for that matter.
