  1. Shouldn't this be in the "General Discussion and Local Talk" Forum?

This is in the football forum and my immediate thought was that the football teams in Smyth County were in a state of despair....and I thought....yeah, what's new?

As far as the subject matter of this post.  I think it's in everybody's best interest to find FACTS first before deeming everybody to hell.

Some great folks work at MSHS, including the Principal and coaches.

  2. Agree 100%.

With the way recruiting is now if you're not on a big time college's radar before or during your junior year then you have a slim to none chance of them ever looking your way. You get on their radar by making a "good" highlight tape and getting it exposure and attending camps and combines during the off-season. Transferring to a more successful school in southwest Virginia for your senior year isn't helping your D1 dreams one damn bit.

It's helping your Emory and Henry Dreams...

Not that getting to go to College to play football is a bad thing....

I tend to believe reasons for kids to transfer are quite a bit more selfish than just getting recognized.  Either their Dad wants their kid to be part of a "winner"... or the kid does.

Immediate Gratification has become a cancer in our society.  People must have what they want right now or they are not satisfied.  Just go try to stand in a line at the grocery store for 5 minutes and you'll see what Im talking about.  Look at all of the people starting to get upset because they are not the center of the cashier's universe at that moment.  People in our society are SPOILED and that's what it boils down to, in my opinion.

You don't have to go to a good 2A school in SWVA, if you are currently on bad 1A school.... not much of a difference in the eyes of College Scouts...

As EH said, you have to be an advocate for yourself, get your name out there on a highlight tape, attend camps and combines and get yourself recognized.  Who would have ever thought that Hard Work, dealing with adversity and determination should be what these young kids are learning from this sport?

  3. I refuse to believe that one year of good coaching and playing against better competition (deep playoff competition) really improves a players stock. I just don't see it. If you're a stud then you're a stud, plain and simple.

I completely understand moving to a school with a better program, but it needs to be done before high school. Once you make a commitment, own it.

    A-Men to that.

  4. And some do a fake move....

There are rules in place, that, if enforced, would stop this from happening and cause schools to be on probation and coaches to be fired. Problem is you have to have some pretty concrete evidence for the VHSL to do anything about it.

I'm already hearing rumors of kids transferring here and there....

  5. I said that and I still believe it. Offense is sound, but he's undersized and from all accounts his defense leaves much to be desired. That is usually a recipe for a conference like MAC or C-USA. That isn't a bad thing at all...less than 1% of high school athletes go D-1. Hell of an accomplishment. But realism goes a long way.

In a related note, comparisons to Redick are absurd and unfair. Redick was magnitudes more polished at this stage than McClung. Oak Hill is not a guaranty of high major stardom. B.J. Stith started for Oak Hill, and wound up at ODU, a mid-major. There are more in that vein.

I am in no way trying to throw shade. I hope he becomes so great that LeBron James will wear Mac McClung pajamas. But I follow college basketball recruiting very, very closely for obvious reasons, and I'm not falling into the "biggest fish in the little pond" trap.

I disagree.  I got to see Redick play at the high school level and McClung.  They are different types of players and I would like to have seen that one on one contest, if possible.

  6. If, in fact he goes to Oak Hill.  I would hate it for Gate City fans.  However, if he wants to be in the spotlight and be recruited by big time schools, Oak Hill is where he should go.  He will get National attention there and have a chance to go to some good colleges.  Somebody said that he has "lower D-1" talent.  I believe that kid is special and could go to a Major College with his talent.  Heck, if J.J. Redick could do it, McClung certainly can.

  7. Gate City impressed me last night. They played extremely well, only had 4 scorers but we all know that can change. Very impressed by their defense and rebounding effort. This team will be extremely hard to beat going forward.

Gate City has a very good team.  Good luck going forward.  Hope you guys win it all.

  8. I was just reading an article on Graham's Darrin Martin who is Grahams' top scorer. It said he always guardian the opponent's top scorer. It should be very interesting if he matches up against McClung.

Martin is a good defender, but I think Cam Allen is coming into his own as of late as a very good defender also.  Martin never seems to be in foul trouble and is still able to do a pretty good job on defense.  On a side note, teams have taken Martin's scoring away from Graham in the past couple of contests, but Graham has had other guys step up.  Somebody  on this site stated that Graham only  has one or two good players.  I disagree.... Graham has one or two outstanding players and 6 or 7 good players that contribute a lot.

  9. That Union game the other night wasn't a great game and they didn't even have their best player, neither was the Union game at Wise. Union is a solid team, the rest of those on that list are not so much. I think it will be close, I think Graham will test GC if not beat GC. Biggest test Gate City has since the Arby's Classic.

I think that you are correct.  Graham is playing their best basketball right now, however if Gate City is as good as advertised, it will be a tall task for Graham to pull the upset.  I think they are capable of doing it, anything is possible.  They came within 8 seconds of defeating Martinsville just 2 seasons ago...within one point actually of beating a Martinsville team that won the state title convincingly.  Anything can happen, Graham is well coached and is capable of beating anybody they face in 2A, they are very young and make some mental errors sometimes, but have improved tremendously throughout the season.  Morgan showed flashes of his former self last night and if he is finally at full strength.  Having him back in the lineups takes some pressure off of Dalton.  Morgan can come in and spell him, as a big body underneath.  Cam Allen has picked up his offensive game as well.  He is a heck of a defender, but has asserted himself on offense lately.  I'm hoping for a good game and pulling for the G-Men to pull his off.

  10. I was at Bluefield College and a part of a VERY small music program. We were very much a team there. I chose to leave that team for a better opportunity. I thought about me. I joined a new team who became my family for two years. We performed more than 100 performances in about 1 1/2 years in 5 different states. I faced plenty of adversity at both schools. And my choice got me to VT. But I made the choice to go to a better program that I felt could get me to where I wanted to go, VT.

Now I was a little older when I did all of this, but I still had to think about myself at some point. I feel like I turned out just fine.

Did you move to Blacksburg or did you just drive there every day?

  11. How old are these "adults" you speak of? Do you have any proof?

Also, hard fouls happen. If you don't want hit, don't go into the paint and then cry about it?

He wasn't in the paint.....either time.  Hard fouls do happen, by people who can't play basketball...

He didn't cry about it,  he just got up and torched Richlands for 30 Plus points.  In fact he had more points then Richlands' entire team before they took him out in the fourth quarter.  Doesn't look like crying to me.

  12. 5 Grown men playing 9th, 10th and eleventh graders, even?  Shouldn't be evenly matched but I guess your right.  I've talk to a parent and several basketball heads from Graham and you better bet an eagle eye is going to be on the flagrant fouls on Martin,  if Richlands makes it to the championship game.

They should be.  In both contests he was fouled very hard and intentionally.  In the first contest, it was right out of the gate when the 2nd half started.  Carlock was irate in the last game over it and he should have been.  I could not believe that the kid was not ejected or not even called for an intentional foul.  I'm starting to wonder if the kids were told to foul him hard in the locker room.  Very disappointed in how those situations were handled, no message was sent to those kids who made those fouls.

  13. I've been around several Richlands' parents/fans today and they are all still in shock at the outcome of last Friday's game...they just knew for certain they would win that one too...

I had a couple tell me that they would beat Graham by 30 before the game and I just bit my lip.  Graham whipped their senior laden team with freshmen, sophomores and juniors....

As for the first game, Graham was impatient and took jump shots, rather than being patient and waiting until something came open.

  14. Graham had and has always had the easier schedule. Graham opponents 117-149 , let me note that WV teams still have up until 23rd to play. I think 3 games left so Bluefield should win , Princeton is playing pretty well since beating Graham in Wv.

Only Bluefield, Grayson , Fort Chiswell Shafy and Richlands have over .500 record.

Richlands 164-165 with Honaker 20-3, Whythe who lost to Honaker 19-1 , Burton 14-7 who played with Union, Twin Valley 16-6 Lebanon 11-10

The conference tournament runner up advances to adjacent conferences 1 seed, and I think anything can happen and enjoy conference tournaments. Burton is 2, Tv is 2, Honaker is one , George Whythe is one, while Tv and Burton are two seeds.

Graham has Bluefield 1 in Wv , Fort Chiswelll will play Chilhowie for right to be conference 2 and go to Redford.

Glynn is A D and head Coach he schedules and cancels games to suit him, date, changes, post ponements. Richlands did not force Graham to come on a snow forecast when they had Allen with an injured arm, and Dalton out with Ankle. Cartlock made sure Richlands came to Graham last year with windchill of 0 only game from Roanoke to Tennessee last year because he has an advantage of Starter out.

Richlands played in state championship game on Saturday and played Wednesday, , Thursday , Friday , and Saturday and went Following Tuesday to Grayson a team who is much improved, and lead Graham until 4th quarter when G men shot 22fts late in the game. Richlands has lead in every game by double digits except yesterday vs Graham. Did not play a home game until January. While Cartlock had schedule 5 ish straight home games. I disagree that Graham has a harder schedule? Graham left Southwesr district and has reaped windfall of point system of AAA, AA, and. A.

Sounds like he just makes smart decisions to me....    You can't argue that Graham plays a weaker schedule, because they play the SouthWest district teams also.
