  2. Merrill Gainer  87-6-1  4 state titles at Bluefield

Tony Palmer    91-17   2 state titles ,one runner up, 4 region titles

Gainer is the standard, but Palmer after year one is 85-11.  Gainer only had the championship game to win as it was only round of playoffs. And he didn't have to build a program it was ready made.  Different times but to me those are the standard. But there is no wrong answer.

What has happened to Richlands is nothing new. They lost the singular binding force and the catalyst for their successful run. Mance is, without question, a good coach but it was his stewardship and steady leadership that built the program. RHS is now going through the exact same thing that GHS did without Carlock, THS over the last 20+ years and many other programs around the area.

Success and winning brings more talent to the board. GHS found the right fit and the results are clearly evident. It may take a few years to find or develop the right Sideline General and staff, but it will happen.

    Exactly

Are there coaches already on staff that would be eligible for the head job? Wouldn’t they look within before hiring outside?

Is there anyone there you'd really want at this point?

How will this play out?  They have the Bye week next week, followed by Lebanon and then a tough matchup with Pulaski Co.

Will they get healthy and make necessary adjustments to improve enough to be a contender late in the season?

If they come out and have another performance like they did against V - High, I could see this game coming down to the wire again.  Clean up the penalties and sloppy play and they should win comfortably (with or without Clements).  They will need Clements at 100% and the O - Line to improve a bit down the stretch, I think to make another run this year.  They are a long way from where they were at at the end of last season.  Can they get there? or be close to the team they were last season?  I think so, the pieces are there, they just need to start putting it all together and soon.  Graham has made tremendous improvement the past couple of years as the season goes on.  This season, they seem to be stuck in neutral.  Gonna have to kick it into gear, or they will be parked in the garage late in the playoffs.

Carter Lloyd should make his return tomorrow. We will see how that affects the offensive line.

True, but does he want to be a head coach or would he even leave his spot at Honaker. I know I wouldn't want to be a head coach. And they will always look into the county first, and I don't see anyone.

Didn't he play at Richlands? It's a natural fit if he wants it.

I will say this. The hiring of Thad Wells set the program back at least a decade, if not more. Wells was never going to stay past 3 years before he jumped (look for him to leave LCA soon too). Now I am not saying Wells is not a good coach, but he did not bring anything new or innovative that Mance hadn't already done, so he didn't move the program forward or even laterally, just slightly back. And I know it was the Covid spring season, but that team did not look great. Plus, that pushed out Ronnie Davis, who should have gotten the job. Snake Palmer might have even come back from Graham at that point. This could have been avoided long ago. Tarter is a great Special Teams coach, positional coach, and assistant, not a head coach. So, assuming he resigns at season's end since high school coaches rarely get straight up fired, who even applies for 2024? And who does the county even consider given the politics?
