  1. How about the W. Smyth Apple Salters?
  2. No real shocker. Ask Tech's athletic dept. how much they lost when the championship was in Jacksonville. In the age of Stub Hub and on line sales, schools having to be on the hook for guaranteed ticket sales does exactly what UVAO says. It is the bowl racket, except that the ACC benefits, so indirectly the member schools also benefit. Unlike the bowls where the bowl committee benefits from the "guarantee."
  3. Oddly enough, it is one of the few pensions, public or private that is fully funded. I wish mine was.
  4. Play in the SEC = No brainer Sit in the SEC = foolish Big 12 = Not that impressive a conference to my POV The young man should choose the program where he is the most comfortable and has the greatest chance at success. If that be UT, WVU or somewhere else does not matter.
  5. One and done is part of the problem. AAU programs that emphasize one on one play versus team play has led to players with diminished all around skills. The love of the 3, has led to players throwing up ill advised shots rather than trying to make a move and taking an open mid-range shot. Without the mid-range shot, it makes it harder to attack the gaps in zones that most teams use. Also, the college game suffers from the physical nature of defense that coaches are teaching. I think college hoops should go to the same system that baseball uses. Players can be drafted out of high school. If they chose to play college ball, they are committed to play three years before they can be drafted again. If they aren't happy with where they are drafted, they can return for their senior season. This system has worked for decades. It allows those who sign to begin their professional careers and provides stability for college programs.
  6. Truth is in spite of all the efforts in TV and movies to burnish their image, historically the LAPD has been a corrupt dysfunctional organization. I hear that drones were being used to track Dorner. Anyone know if that is true.
  7. Okay, how many think the next Pope won't be a white European? My money is on an Italian, which the vast majority have been.
  8. Actually, Paul's entire political world view, including the isolationist position were mainstream Republican positions from the 1910's through the 1950's. It was only through the election of Nixon, the work of William F. Buckley and Reagan that it became the non-mainstream view it is today.
  9. The sad fact is that in our world those who are good citizens and role models get overlooked.
  10. A first for me to see Ron Paul's name connected to the left.
  11. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/donald-driver-final-stop-green-bay-home-78-201447164--nfl.html Donald Driver shows appreciation to one fan.
  12. In the world of non-guaranteed contracts, this is what happens when your team rebuilds. He didn't sound shocked, it is just the business of the sport. The Giants may re-sign him, for less $$$, or he might end up somewhere else. Keep in mind that he is at the point where he is nearing the end of what would be a average career in years for a starting NFL back.
  13. The reality is that all most folks get anymore via USPS is bills and junk. Saturday delivery is something that has been kept around out of tradition. (We Americans get stuck on tradition that has little practical purpose in a modern world. i.e. a school year that leaves children free to work on the farm in the summer.) Of course the USPS runs a deficit because of the fact that they are required to fully fund future pension liabilities in advance. (I bet we all wish our employers public or private were required to do that.)
  14. http://hamptonroads.com/2013/02/after-12-years-grid-chesapeake-man-sentenced-0 Guy ducks out on a warrant and creates a new identity and finally gets caught. What I found funny was the Judge was shocked and dismayed that someone with a warrant would not turn themselves in to authorities.
  15. While I do not qualify as a "soccer dude," let me comment anyway. It seems the Italian League has had this problem recently with Juventus. With the amount of money and interest involved in the sport, I find it unsurprising.
  16. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ap-sources-cavaliers-lazor-join-191433330--ncaaf.html Looks like the Hoos need a new OC. UVAO, are you happy, disappointed or indifferent?
  17. Check out this searchable database. I love that one of our state senators from SWVA got free tickets to Seaworld and had nearly $10,000 in gifts. This doesn't even cover the campaign contributions that they get http://www.timesdispatch.com/news/state-regional/government-politics/gifts-to-virginia-legislators/html_1564ad34-6a24-11e2-9160-0019bb30f31a.html
  18. It could be especially bad if UT wears their highlighter orange and Oregon goes with highlighter yellow.
  19. You know even if he never did another role, that one is a true classic.
