  1. How many assistants does a head coach need? At times Haysi has only had 3 assistants(not counting JV coaches who help out at games). Better to have 2-3 guys that really want to be there and are dedicated than 7-8 who arent. Offensive Coordinator (work w/ backs) Defensive Coordinator (work w/ backs) Line Coach Head Coach Is that not enough?
  2. Sad that it always comes down to that
  3. I know they dont. I dont really understand why. In alot of cases it would make travel alot easier for the kids.
  4. I know DC is trying to avoid the long bus rides to the HS by having HS only buses serve the outlying communities. What about regional schoold districts? I have no opnion on this at all(I dont know enough about the details; funding, school board seats, etc) Assuming current consolidation plans werent in effect, for example Buchannon Co/Dickenson Co/ Wise Co/Russell Co. Close Council send them to Haysi/Honaker Close Pound send them to Clintwood/JJ Kelly Close Ervinton send them to Castlewood/Coeburn/Haysi Close St Paul send them to Castlewood I know this is kinda drastic and I dont know that it would have been a solution for this area but what about applying the concept to other areas? Such as Highland, Bath, Alleghany and Craig. I know Alleghaney doesent have a low enrollment but the others do. Just looking for opnions
  5. Very true. Graham has fallen on hard times and has a ways to go to even come close to where they were, I have no doubt that w/ time and w/ the right coach they can do it. All im saying is if the program doesent shoot straight to the moon dont be suprised or dissapointed. A ball is not a bunch of pushovers and Graham will have their hands full in their district for now, the program IMO should approach it that way, win district and then worry about everything else. SWVA needs Graham to be a great program, we are all pulling for the G-men. In my mind they are 1 of the 4 great teams of old from this area that the whole state knows; Graham, Powell Valley, Applachia and Gate City. PV and Appy are gone but Union holds promise for the future, Gate City is still goin strong and hopefully Graham can return to greatness
  6. A ball is really underated. Some schools, like futbolking said bring EVERYONE, but there are alot of A schools that just dont have that large of a fan base. Also nothing against Graham but it seems like some of the G-men fans think they are gonna immediately make it to the 3rd round of the playoffs because the competition is so weak. Wait until you guys draw Radford or Gate City in the first round, not to mention what the Wise County schools could potientally bring to the table(Union and Central could be really good). Dont set your expectations too high, too soon. There isint much of a dropoff from D3 to D2
  7. Resume? Offensive style? Defensive style? Im just curious
  8. True and I understand that(dont blame them a bit). What I dont understand is the athletics side of it. How is going to one rival any different than going to another? To me its almost a final act of defiance against the WCSB, as if they are some kind of enemy. I really dont think that is gonna happen much tho. That kind of stuff just comes from angry parents. IMO
  9. I honestly think thats why alot of people raised such a fuss. There are a lot of kids from other counties attending Wise Co schools. From what ive heard possibly up to 50% of St. Paul students are from Russell Co. If thats the case how can they argue to keep a school open that only serves 90 kids from Wise Co?
  10. Good. No problem there. I just dont understand the "my school got closed and im mad so im not going where im supposed to go" arguement, which to be honest I havent heard of any students doing that yet. That seems to be an empty(and rediculious) threat by some parents. From what ive heard the kids seem to be adjusting well, they seem excited about the possibilities. Good for them
  11. For their sake I hope they are from Russell, I would hate to see 2 kids that talented have to sit out a year for no reason. Those 2 would have made Eastside alot better, they will be a huge addition for Castlewood(which had almost no passing attack last season).
  12. That will make Union TOUGH! He is a fine ball player. Did either of the RBs from PV graduate or are they underclassmen?
  13. Eastside could be good, just depends on which kids go to Coeburn and which ones go to Castlewood, not saying Wise Co kids will go to Russell Co, I just dont know where they will go to school. If Eastside gets the QB and WRs from StP, they could be pretty solid. Coeburn had a pretty good running game last season. Union could be tough, a real grind it out offense but will probably lack explosiveness(no real passing attack). Depends on where the FB from Appy goes(I may be mistaken but I think he may be from Lee Co). Combine him with the two RBs from PV and thats a formitable running attack Central could be good, JJK has had some good teams lately but lacked explosive players. Pound had a good young RB and will add some depth. Could be pretty good. Like you said it just depends on how quickly they come together
  14. I assumed he was the new coach
  15. Sounds like Graham got a good man. What type of offense did he run at Alleghany? VMI runs a Double Slot, could that be the direction he goes?
  16. HAHAHA!!! Its just a spirited conversation. But seriously this thread has changed topics 3-4 times, good stuff
  17. Be thankful they are taking their time and making a solid decision, instead of just picking someone.
  18. Walk outside just after daybreak and tell me if it smells like 2-a-days to you. I cant wait, even though Haysi is probably gonna struggle again this season
  19. I do. If the mascot was the lashers/plantationmen and used the confederate flag I would raise a bigger fuss than anyone on here. I just dont make that connection, I can see how some people make it, but I dont myself. I will say that the period from the early 1600s to 1865 was the darkest most regretful period of American history and I myself am not the least bit proud of what took place during that era. I see the American Civil War as being similar to the American Revolution in terms of one sides motivation for splitting from the other. I understand the arguement but I simply dont agree with it. I think its rediculious that Racists for use the Confederate flag to spread hate, thats not what its about. To me ithe flag means that once upon a time people from my region, my ancestors, stood up against invasion and refused to be pushed around. I would refrain from giving new schools the Rebel mascot for the reasons we are discussing right now but I dont agree with forcing a school to change its mascot
  20. Any mascot is gonna be an offensive symbol to someone. These are just ones I typed up off the top of my head, *Indians - offensive to Native Americans *Eagles - Offensive to Native Americans because the Eagle is a symbol of the US gov, the people that have committed many atrocities against them. *Black Panthers - Offensive to some white people because they associate that w/ radical militants *Hillbillies(Man, WV) - Im an Applachian American and they are poking fun at my heritage(dumbest thing I have ever typed on this forum) *Highlanders(Glenvar, VA) - My heritage is scots-irish and there representation of my ancestors is of a violent, weapon carrying man(2nd dumbest thing I have ever typed on this forum) *Fighting Irish(Notre Dame) - by including fighting in the mascot name they are stating that people of Irish ancestory are violent people(tied for #2) *Rebels - by schools choosing to be the Rebels they are portraying all of SWVA as a bunch of bigoted Neo-Nazis. I dont have any reason to make this association other than both Hurley HS and Neo-Nazi organizations display the Conferedate flag You guys see where im goin w/ this. Now if it REALLY IS an offensive mascot(such as the Cleveland Indians) then I think the offended party has a legitimate arguement but just because someone doesent feel comftorable w/ something something doesent make it wrong. Maybe they should broaden their perspective a little
  21. What im saying is I dont like that immage but thats my problem, not anyone elses. I shouldnt expect them to change just because I dont like it. Now if they had a shirt that said "I Dont Like Redtiger" thats not ok and I would make a public issue out of it
  22. I dont think Ervinton displays Confederate flags anymore. Their mascot is basically a big mustache, chin and a calvary hat. How Hurley feels about the "Rebel flag" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:HurleyHighSchool.jpg I do understand people being offended by the confederate flag, but when I see this http://cdn1.iofferphoto.com/img/item/100/160/327/AfricaFistZm.jpg I assume, right or wrong, that the wearer has a militant attitude and that they dont like me. But I keep my mouth shut, try to get along and get over it
  23. As far as Helmets my guess would be, Central will use Pounds Black Eastside will use Coeburns White Union will use JJ Kellys White Some may have to be bought to ensure that there are enough but not many. Facemsaks will have to be bought for Union and im not sure but Pounds facemasks may be black, if thats the case they could be used for Eastside. JJK used red masks, they could be used for Central. Remember were only talking about jerseys/pants/belts/socks, the schools already have the other equipment. All of the other sports will be a little harder to fill out
  24. I thought the same thing. I would expect some plain style uniforms for the first few seasons, the simple "tear away" football jerseys will work for now. Im sure equipment that is already on hand will save alot of money, for example Coeburn and JJ Kelly used white helmtes last season, Coeburn wore plain white pants, those will be useable at any school. Centrals colors are red/black, so the black Pound helmets can be used. That will save alot of money. Central may not have to have new band uniforms at all.
